Rolos!!

Anything about Bogota and it's people!

My wife is from Bogota. I've been there many times and love the city. Her family lives in Soacha which many people have told me is a very dangerous part of the city but I always stay there and have not had any problems, I think it is worse on the other side of the Autopisto Sur; San Mateo and southward. Both of my two sons were born in el hospital Palermo. We usually go salsa dancing near Plaza de las Americas (closer to Soacha) but there is also some good places near Galerias. When I'm there I go to a Latin Mass (Latin as in the ancient roman language) in Teusaqilla. The part of the city that I believe I would most like to live in is near Maloca, a lot of new apartments going up there, (but that is down the road financially). I also enjoy homebrew beer and there is a great bar near La Zona Rosa that I go to.

I would like to dedicate this discussion to the city of Bogota, and the Rolos. Please post anything about the city; what you like, what you don't, your experiences there, etc. Thanks.

I love Bogotá I am a paisa who went to school in Bogotá, and I have to say that I loved the city too. But paisas and rolos are like water and oil, and without trying I ended with friends from Pasto, Santander, la Costa, etc., but very few Bogotano friends. Bogotanos really love us paisas ;)

Yeah, Salitre
Yeah, Salitre is the name of that area, I couldn't remember when I wrote the post.

Jaramillo,

Is it Antioqia? The paisa region I mean. My suegro is from Pereira, I went there once and I liked it. But I was only there for two days and it was all running around meeting the family so I didn't do much sightseeing. I geuss with a suegro Paisa and a suegra Rola I got the best (or worst) of both worlds; my wife is a real firecracker! BAM!

Speaking of my suegro, he is part of the reason I feel safe in Soacha. He is very outgoing, was a leader in the union of his company, a man of the people you could say. So everyone there knows him and respects him, he can't walk down the street without sayig hi to twenty people.

Like the city... Last summer my niece and I walked in the Salitre area to go to a friend of hers. Nice buildings, nice hallways and appartments. There was still construction, but it was kinda alone. And that friends also finds the residential area just that... alone. I noticed we had to walk quite a bit before catching a bus.
On July 20th we walked from Plaza Bolivar, Chapinero Alto, Chico, La Castellana, Av. Cordoba to CC Bulevar. A very long walk, but I enjoyed the atmosphere of walking around, seeing all the flags just about everywhere. I liked the area I was staying with my family: with CC Bulevar and CC San Rafael within walking distance.
We took buses to the centre but were advised against going to Cra. 10, which supposedly is kinda dangerous. We just hopped over to Parque Tercer Milenio once. We went once or twice to El Ricaurte. I opted once to go to the South of the city, but was replied with "donde hay 235 pandillas?". So we were "allowed" to take the Transmilenio to Portal Usme. We changed buses there to go back. So far my Southern experience...
I actually like the city and people are so friendly. A nice change from home :-)
Greetings

Exactly what do you mean by "controlled" by the AUC (for Soacha but you also make the sweeping statement for the coffee region)? This should be interesting.

And here was me thinking this post was about chocolate. Damn my British preconceptions.

But if I must stay on topic let me link in Chocolate anyway. I went to a huge sweet shop in Chapinero to buy loads of boxes of chocolatinas Jet (Under the pretext that I would distribute them as presents when I returned to England, but the bulk of which ended up being eaten by me). It was there that I discovered a large bar called Milky Way. Now in the UK we have Milky Way's, which are absolutely delicious but they come in very small pieces, not in a big bar, so practicially salivating and not even bothering to negotiate with the storekeep, I bought Milky Way's lost in the anticipation of how great a large bar would be.

However it turned out that Milky Way's were simply the name under which Colombia calls what the Brits call Mars Bars. Now, I love Mars Bars so it wasn't a great loss but a part of me mourned the loss of exctasy that would have come from a king sized Milky Way.

Why am I rabbiting on about chocolate in a thread about Bogota? Because that was one of my favourite Bogota memories. The store is off Calle 63, opposite a Kikoriko and the cinema. It was raining, but not in a cold, miserable British way, but a fizzy, light sparkly Bogotano way. You could tell the Sun was blazing brightly above those rain clouds, for if it is possible to imagine such a contradiction the black was backlight with white. That is only the clumisiest way I can describe it.

So I walked happily away through the rain, my mouth full of Mars bar masquerading as Milky Way and my arms weighed down with Jets.

My name's Cockney Colombian and I am a Chocoholic
