Rodallega does it again for Wigan!

Hugo Rodallega, the only Colombian playing in the English Premier League, led Wigan to victory over West Ham today:

http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/85/england/2009/09/12/1496874/wigan-1-0...

I noticed he wasn't even on the squad when Colombia lost to Uruguay 3-1 last week. It's a complete mystery to me why Colombia doesn't use one of their best in WCQ. If he's good enough for the EPL why isn't he good enough for the Colombian NT? WTF!?!

EYY UP Wigan I've just been listening to Casino Classics here in Colombia (Wigan Casino) that is for those who don't know good old Northern Soul,so a bit of Latin flair in the English Premier League eh last time I remember it was Juan Pablo Angel & Hamilton Ricard & Asprilla.
Wonder if he eats the famous Wigan pies?.

The reason he is not playing for Colombia is because the coach or coaches are not bright at all!!
They need to fire all these incompetent coaches.

Highlights of the game including Rodallega's goal:

He also had a marvelous strike that the keeper was barely able to redirect over the cross bar.

Utopiacowboy I hear loud and clear. Rodallega should be playing for the national team!

Or at the very least, make the subs bench! Maybe Uruguay was too far to travel from England.

Radamel Falcao, Teofilo Gutierrez and Jackson Martinez have done plenty to deserve their spots in the national team. The armchair QB believes he could have won the game monday morning, if you get my rift...

Monpirri, how can you agree with both?

romy, the results speak for themselves.

Your rift would apply to anyone who is not directly involved in the game, including yourself. What the hell can I do except make observations?

Anyway, it can't be both ways: Colombia either have the talent to make the world cup but are hindered by an incompetant manager who is not apt at making squad selection among other things; or they do not have the talent to make the world cup despite a manager who makes all the 'right' decisions. Or a combination of both.

Maybe he was right to refrain from selecting Rodallega, but I have met no Colombian who actually believes that Rodallega should not at least get a place on the squad, especially given his current form.

ManINred, I agree that all the fine players in Colombia should be playing right now in the team!i.e Rodallega, Falcao...

It's not an observation to make a judgment that such and such player should have been on the squad or not. Perhaps your judgment is justified because you have seen all Colombian strikers play recently???
Squad selection is fickle and hard to judge, I would venture to say that 85% of the players that were called up would be in the squad regardless of who was managing the team. But judging from last week's games the fallacies of the manager are in strategy and tactics.

To play in the EPL as a striker, you have to be among the best players in the world. Leaving one of the best players in the world off your squad is definitely going to hurt your chances. Another player who was not picked is Aquivaldo Mosquera, formerly of Sevilla in La Liga, now of Club America. He was one of a handful of Colombians in La Liga and Club America paid a bundle to acquire him but again the Colombian NT coach saw fit to leave him off the squad. Keep doing this and you're not going to have a team capable of qualifying. I would say astute squad selection is essential. Look at what Maradona has done (or better yet failed to do) even though he has a huge array of world class Argentine players from which to choose. Instead he chooses guys who when notified that they were selected, at first thought it was some kind of prank!

I will tell you now, Romy, that Colombia will not qualify. And as we know, mis Paraguayos have qualified. Of course Paraguay didn't leave world class players like Salvador Cabanas (Club America) and Roque Santa Cruz (Manchester City) off the squad which I am sure is what Eduardo Lara would have done if he had been in charge!

It's a shame that the Portuguese league isn't on the tube the way the other European leagues are. He needs to tear it up in Colombia's final WCQ games.

My opinion/judgement call/observations are valid based on Colombia's recent failures, esp. in scoring goals. They have 10 goals this qualifying campaign. That is pathetic!!! The only team that has scored less is Peru in last place, and even they've managed 9. Venezuela and Bolivia have both managed double the amount of goals that Colombia have. And yes, I've seen the squad play on the national team! Come on Romy, that's flawed logic. I don't need to see every other Argentina striker to know that Messi should be picked for Argentina. Or Rooney for England. If Colombia's problem is goals, then they should perhaps shuffle their strikers. All of the Colombians I have spoken to are baffled as to why he wouldn't make at least the bench, and they are more authorities on the national team than I am.

Anyway, what can you expect? If the current formula isn't working, people are bound to be upset. Colombia is one of 3 teams that I give a toss about; and it looks grim (to say the least)

romy says on Oct 5, 2009, 08:09:

MIR, please point out precisely where there is flawed logic. You are basing your logic on faulty assumptions, such as blaming goal scoring strictly to striker selection. And I know you understand the game better than that.

On striker selection, English people understand that there is Rooney and then there is Heskey... besides they all play in England.
Colombia has talent scattered throughout the world that the nt manager needs to keep track of. Someone that makes 'right and wrong' judgments of the nt should also be careful of this. It's very tough to differentiate between Montero, Rodallega, Teofilo, Jackson, Wason, Darwin, Adriancho, Pabon, Rey, Angel, etc. the only guy that stands out above the rest is Falcao, a God at River
Watch when Hitler finds out Falcao was transferred... It wasn't nice! hahaha

utopiacowboy says on Oct 5, 2009, 17:54:

Falcao is a good player but he hasn't exactly lit it up in his last 8 WCQ appearances: one goal! The same as Rodallega with a lot less playing time. In the 2006 WCQ, Luis Gabriel Rey had 3 goals in 6 appearances.

Most observers say that the Colombian midfield is their weak spot. Against Mexico, Vladimir Marin was excellent. I'd say he deserves more playing time.
