Robbery in Park Lleras

Just a note for girls (mostly) to take care of your hand bags when seated in restaurants / bars. I was in Thaico with my GF this evening and she had her handbag looped over the back of her seat. It was stolen while we were sitting there. I am pretty sure now that it was a group of three who stopped behind our table for a bit. This could happen anywhere, but it was pretty slick, so a bit if extra care could save you a lot of hassle ( 7 to 8 months for her to get her new cedula??!!!!!!)

There are two cameras in the restaurant, so hopefully tomorrow we will be able to se who did it.

she should know better than that to leave her bag hanging over the chair... you got to either hang your bag under the table if it has a hook there. or keep it on your lap

It was, I'm sure, the bunch of clients who stopped behind our table. Kids from the street could not have got it. I'm going to buy a small steel cable with lock that she can lock it to the chair or table.

better yet.. leave it hanging on the back of the chair and get a bit of fishing nylon and connect it like that to your foot or something.. they wont know its connected will go to steal it quietly then all hell will break lose and then the bar owners can get the corporation bad boys to beat the fuckers up

why would a cable lock ''laugh me off the planet''? Very small, fine and easy to wrap around the handle without being obvious. Ive used them for my backpack. Wish I had seen the people do it; I would have gone spastic.

Update - a street kids selling chicklets in p Poblado found all her papers in the rubbish outside exito. I was close last night as I had run down to Park Pobaldo looking for them. She is with the police now and the child who found them. Going to see what else we can do. Big relief that she has her papers and cards ie cedula!! The police have a bunch of photos of robbers in P lleres.

Great luck!
Hope you are goimg to reward the kid who found them. The word may get around and more kids may be willing to help then! Bear in mind that the kid probably only makes a couple of thousand Pesos per day and he could share your happiness.

Every time someone I know gets their wallet or purse stolen, a kid or someone "finds" it in a park, or somewhere in the streets. They then expect a big reward for returning them. So they not only steal from you, but they expect a tip for returning the documents. And I guess one doesn't have much of an option but paying. But I would agree the price with the kid, and even haggle, because they don't deserve money or tips for stealing from you.

Thanks Pedro - good news indeed; she is very happy. They tossed all her documents into a plastic bag in the bin outside exito. The document that she had paid for university had her home number written on it which is how he had contacted her.

The police went with her to meet him (she didnt realise it was a small child from the phone call) and gave the kid a bit of a fright, but all is well with him now. We gave him 2 k and will take some clothes for him when I pass back. Thaico have not been that helpful as yet - have to go back at 830 to see the video.

Talk about negative; why does someone automatically assume that the kid who found the stuff also stole it? See why Colombians get the ache with us foreigners. It is possible but I am sure that the returned documents were well worth 20,000 Pesos. It is also a warning to us all as well as the writer of the post: we must never let our guards down because the majority of thefts here are derived from the provision of opportunities.

kenblanquito. Not only thefts here. If you go to a restaurant in London, you have to be as careful. My girlfriend had the same problem, someone stole her purse with all her credit cards in a restaurant in Kensington. The police cheked the cameras, but nothing could be done. And no one came back with our papers, I guess they don't know yet that you can make an extra quid from your victims this way. Opportunistic theft happens all over the world.

bickerss says on Jan 26, 2009, 14:32:

There is no way the kid could have taken them - no little kids can get up into Thaico. I have seen the video now, and we saw who it was - a couple in their late 20's or early 30's; ''normal '' looking people and reasonably well dressed. I was in the bathroom and they came towards our table, then turned around , had a conversation (no doubt on what to do), and then moved forward and stopped behind my GF.

As i passed behind her the girl took the bag and passed it around her back (GF had turned her head to watch me sit). We are right on the edge of the video so it is not super clear. The camera that would have showed them leaving the bar was broken. We went back to Park Poblado and the kid took us to where he found the stuff. We got back the discount card for her university (next semester), photos, and cards.

I almost went down that far last night, but stopped at P Poblado - kicking myself now (it was found on the grassed area across from the vehicle exit at Exito).

We also saw a fair few photos from the police of theives caught on camera in P Lleres - most were well dressed with one guy in a suit and another very elegant lady.

Anyway - Thaico are going to make us a copy of the video - does anyone know of any way that we can have the images improved so we can see their faces more clearly? They also think they know the table that they were sitting at and are going to see if they paid by credit card!!

Anyway -plan bickerss will be in action if we can get clear photos of them!! Flyers and adds in papers - their fat faces with ''ladrones'' plastered beside them!!!

Of course the person returning them would not be the same person that stole from you. They would know better than that. There is no way to be certain if the kid knows the thieves or not, but I do think there is a good chance that he does. There usually is a link.

I am glad she recovered all her papers, and I guess that's all that matters with the kid. I hope something can be done with the video.

bickerss says on Jan 26, 2009, 15:13:

So what is his link then? Why involve the litle kid? In the hope that he can claim 20 k ? Why would they ''want'' the ID cards to be found ,and use him to do it - I fail to see a link.

He was just a kid who found them in the park he hangs out in; and yes, he personally was probably hoping for a reward. We were pretty friendly with him and we asked him numerous times if he knew who it was and if he saw them emptying the bag; I am reasonably sure that if he knew he would help us out in the hope of a further reward.

Interesting comment he made about the paramilitares who watch in P Lleres, and would probably 'axe' someone who was caught stealing from inside one of te clubs.

Viajero.
Absolutely!
Looking at the crime figures for most London Boroughs, I am glad that I do not live there any more. More disturbing are the murder statistics, including those for minors, in Hackney, Newham, Brixton and Edmonton. The places that display the most deprivation in London.
However, just like Medellin, one does not escape the threats in more affluent areas either!

Do they have a speakers corner in Medellin bickerss? That would be a good way of getting word out on the thieves (except that they may have your gfs address info).
