ROBBED AT KNIFE POINT IN BOGOTA! THIS COUNTRY IS DANGEROUS!!

I was on a street corner not a few blocks from the down town center and all the main hostels. Three young guys came up to me and said "money, money!" they had knives in thier hands and werent messing around! I was with my younger brother at the time. they grabed our shirts and put the knives to our necks. I shoved them away and we took off. They started to chase us but we lost them after a few blocks. }
It was a well lit area with plenty of people around, they didnt care. Both me and my brother are over 6ft tall and plenty strong but they werent afraid. They all looked well dressed and groomed, not like the desperate kids you would think!
I am trying to warn the americans that might come here that it is not as safe as many places say. Things have not changed as much as many people might think. There is alot of crime everywhere here! Yesterday I saw ..... i wont fo into the details but it wasnt good.
Tons of drug use aswell. It would be much safer to go to Quito. It has a very beautiful old town. Beautiful city, nice and clean. and tons of really cheap sourenirs. Second Higest capital in the world and right in the Andes. Much safer and better and cheaper for tourist and travelers. Tons to see and do!
if you want to know more send me a personal message.

What 3 people had a knife to your neck and you managed to escape? No self-respecting criminal or gang memeber in London or NYC would ever let that happen. There's crime in every country (read any newspaper in any language in any country for eg of that) but it sounds to me that the criminals in Bogota are softer and easier to escape from than most. Stay in Bogota, keep fit, and it seems like you'll be safer than in most places.

Unfortunate incident. You shouldn't, however, generalise the country or the city... or its people as a matter of fact based on such an event. Robbers are everywhere and it could have happened anywhere. It's a question of being at the wrong place at the wrong time and with the unlucky addition of having these three individuals near as well.
At what time and -more importantly- where did this happen? Bogotá has many streets/areas where one must always be vigilant, especially after sunset.
Good luck and thanks for sharing (please try not to generalise next time).

thats why i rather not to go back to my own country, it stresses me out everytime, last time i went had to change prior to travel my htc p3300 cellphone (guess costs around 2 million pesos an things like that qualifies for loosing your life downthere) for a nokia a cheap one and yes sadly i got high chances to get kidnapped just because i got a decent life abroad and not by farc or anything but for normal criminals that are used to extortion people all around, seems like is a sin to have some money downthere, guess at times criminals feels the right to take everything away from you just because you are doing good ...

haha but i got a good story to tell here in the same bogota downtown ,the first and last time my husband went to colombia we were walking towards the museum in the 7 avenue and my husband wanted to take pics ,i said no way, they will see the camera and will come after us but he got stubborn and i said ok take just one. Im always aware of everything like a paranoic mouse i immediately saw this guy holding a baby that stare at us and chased us for 3 blocks i got my eyes constantly on him so he knew i was aware and didnt approach ,I took a taxi and went straight to the hotel....

Is million times better to stay away than to loose your freedom or get stabbed by those crazy people...
colombia is getting even worst by the day just look at the statistics and no i dont wanna be a part of those noooo way...

i love my country too bad that is way too crazy, if you want to go to south america i recommend panama .ooh what a paradise for traveling no worries at all ,honest people wherever i went and you can actually enjoy nature and ecological paths with no worries haha just avoid the border with colombia that is the most dangerous spot in whole panama .

THUR: believe me a robbery of that kind is weird uphere ,at least if someone gets stabbed it gets to the news and is usually because of fighting, we always say is normal when you live in colombia but for some parts of the world to be attacked by 3 with knives and people being indifferent all around aint normal.

Regarding the Candelaria history I don´t believe it, it is like the guy who got beating in a fight againsg a handicap person, then goes home and said he was beating by a gang

Rubito is spot on with his comments. Why pick on Bogotá anyway? Either you are just trying to stir things up or you have never been in another city except Bogota or, you are really stupid. Any large city in any country is going to have crime problems...some worse than others. If you walk around looking for trouble like being well dresses, talking about money on the street, counting money in public, or acting like the "Ugly American" than you deserve what you get. When I first came to Bogotá, I listen to my novia (now wife) about how to be cautious...thus far I have never had one iota of a problem. I have gone to many places in Bogotá and other cities and no one has ever threatened me in any way and I have never felt that I was ever in danger. Want danger my friend? Go to Detroit anytime, any day and you will find danger.

During the first Gulf War in Iraq a newspaper reporter was in a firefight with some of the U.S. soldiers. During a lull in the action he asked the soldier how things were going. The soldier responded, "Hell there is more action than this in Newark, N.J. on a Saturday night than here. The one city that I have never felt safe in is Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The police are more criminal than the criminals.

I also thought the story was something only a Pow Wow kind of character would come up with. I have faced a bunch of really uncomfortable situations in Bogota: Being mugged, being followed and harassed by a cop, having my car vandalized...but I am aware this sort of crap happens everywhere and I still get pretty excited every time I travel to Bogota. And that is not just because I lived in Bogota for many years. My bf and best friend (very obvious American and British, respectively) came to Bogota and we planned on going to the Museo Nacional, so off we go on a weekday after brunch and as we walk from parking place by Plaza de Toros we are ambushed by two hobos (proper hobos, dressed in rags and sniffing glue)...it was a very unfortunate experience involving a lot of bad words, spit etc etc...but BF is always eager to go back to Colombia and best friend thought it was the nicest country out of his 4 country trip through Latin America.

I know a female Colombiana, here in Sabaneta, who was robbed by two young men with knives just two days ago. It happened on main street at 10:00 AM in front hundreds of people.

She is poor and sells lottery tickets on the street. They took everything.
I will be more careful in the future with the local ATM machines and my personal security in general. Locals tell me the problem isn't the local people, but rather strangers from outside of Sabaneta.

I do feel Bogota is more dangerous than most other places but what do you want with such a big city. I have lived in Medellin for over 2 years and never felt unsafe but off course shit happens here as well.

Everyone should be aware that la candelaria is not the safest place especially after 11.00 pm. Better to take a cab but I was just 2 blocks from the hostel and thought it was stupid to take a cab for just a few blocks. It happened on the street of Platypus, 300 meters from the entrance. I have been there a couple of times and never took cabs and also walked around after 11.00 pm. Yes this time I was drunk and didn't pay attention so I guess I was giving papaya....

Safety is also a relative issue and people always associate with it personal experience rather than general statistics.

IE, all over the internet you will find people saying things like: "I did/went to place xyz with no problems, thus xyz is safe" Never mind xyz may actually be one of the more dangerous places on earth"

Everyday all over the world people visit and live in dangerous places without anything happening to them. At the same time people are victims of crime in places everyone considers safe.

If you are well informed about what you are doing and know how to handle yourself you can reduce your risks -- but sometimes people are just unlucky and happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Go a few years back, 4 years ago it was a lot more dangerous than today and 8 years ago it was quite scary. The situation has improved lots - but this doesn`t make it a safe place.
And Quito certainly has a lot more crime than Bogota! No doubt!
How many times do you hear of people getting robbed at knife point in Bogota? Very rarely.

Oh boy,
I was afraid this might happen. I was not intending in any way to knock this country. Of the forty countries I have been to it is probably my favorite. In all honesty my motive was to keep information circulating about the danger in Colombia so as to scare off any potential tourist deciding wether or not to come. I know that when I was deciding wether or not to come here something like this may have influenced me. Stupid, I know. But I figured I might as well try. I am disapointed that no one figured it out. Why else would I right a title so silly sounding.
I actually have no idea if Quito is safer or not. I just came back from a few days there and it was already corrupted by tons of tourist. I figured a few more couldnt hurt.
About the incedent. Wasnt really any big deal, the kids were really timid (thank God). I know that it was extremely stupid on my part. I should have never been there at that time. I was glad to get away with out losing anything. What surprised me was how well dressed the kids were. Some one later told me there is a gang that runs that area and robs people all the time there. I wasnt really surpised other than that. You do stupid things, bad stuff happens. I learned a good lesson. people can tell you all the time to be careful, "its dangerous" but its another story when it happens to you. I dont think that Bogota is any more dangerous than any where else Ive been. Every huge city like this has its dangerous places. Its up to you to be careful and not go wandering around at night on back allys. DUH!
Its hard for me to say the exact area because I dont know the city that well yet. It was like behind Hotel avenida Jiminez (in the travel guide) about 6-7 blocks. Just south of The University of the Andes, about five blocks. It happened right near the soccer park where alot of young guys hang out. It was about 8:45 at night.
For the record I love this coutry. It is amazing in so many ways. The neighboring countrys (Ecuador and Venezula) are nothing like it. Dont even compare. It is one of the few latin countrys that embasses its own culture and doesnt just look to the USA for an Identity. (that is of the ones I've been to.)

Nope,, not true. Only one person has been killed in the last 6 years that DID NOT DESERVE TO BE Killed. One,, yep,, one in the small town where I live.

Colombia does not have a legal death penalty,, but they sure as hell have an unofficial penalty.

There are almost NO robberies. Who would rob someone in a small town ? Where would they come from ? Everyone knows everyone else. There are folks watching the bus terminal and incoming highways. Should a stranger show up he is a known of almost immediately. New car in town,, ha,, does anything think people don't notice and talk about it ?

Don't bother other folks and you won't have a problem. Be an asshole,, especially a foreign asshole,, well,, you will be asked to leave town and if you're smart,, you leave,, that day. PS: there are NO foreigners (especially Canadian dopers) in town and I doubt there will ever be one that stays for over a few days.

Don't pay your debts,, screw around with someones amante (wives are probably OK),, you will have a problem,,, cheat at gambling and you will be more than likely be killed or at least an attempted killing.

Gay and screw around with kids,, yep,, death sentence more than likely,, especially if KY jelly isn't used,, priests do not have immunity from this death penalty.

Sorry,, but it really is quite peaceful,,, I can,, and do go into all parts of town. I'm rehabing an estrato one house now,, I'm there every day and leave my tools every night,, oh,, get involved with the drug trade,, more than likely a death sentence.

The list goes on,,, far as I'm concerned any of those killed aren’t missed,, only a topic of conversation.

Last night someone hacked a drunken asshole to death with a machete. Yes,, he as an obnoxious asshole,, probably got drunk and threatened the wrong person. Amazing,, he walked almost two blocks from the place he was hacked,, missing one hand and his throat cut,, damn,, those drunks can take a lick'n and keep on tick'n.

¨Its hard for me to say the exact area because I dont know the city that well yet. It was like behind Hotel avenida Jiminez (in the travel guide) about 6-7 blocks. Just south of The University of the Andes, about five blocks. It happened right near the soccer park where alot of young guys hang out. It was about 8:45 at night. ¨

This is still a relatively dangerous part of town after dark. Travelers have been robbed arround there fairly often for years. It´s safer than the mariscal in quito though. Be careful and you should be fine though.

Make that 18 Kat- a young woman was stabbed to death outside a supermarket in Peckham last night.

It is. But it used to be exceedingly safe. And losing that halcyon state through nothing more than political weakness is making us very angry indeed.

docwilliam - I suspect ice is failing to mention he was likely preaching/missionarying to large groups. Check past comments and this was supposedly Ice's purpose in Colombia: http://poorbuthappy.com/ice/posts/

I don't care where you are in the world, drawing attention to yourself will get you a different kind of treatment to what a normal low key traveller or even resident gets.

I don't feel Ice's incident has strong relevance to most travellers or foreigners living in Bogota.

Actually it was completely unrelated to anything else I do. I was out for a run (walking at the time). It was like the third day here.
And no, I am not with holding any information. It was surprising to me too that that would come up to us. All I can think is that they must have been extremely dedperate or maybe drugs? They just ran up from behind us and stuck the knives against our necks. thats just kinda what happened we didint really 'let' them.
