Reverse Gringo Pricing - Popoyan

Walking round the beautiful white city of Popoyan (all looks the same you know - collectivo 12,000 pesos from Cali) looking for a place to lay my head, was going through the hotels in various guidebooks. Not much in the mid range bracket, usually prefer cheap anyhow, when I entered another hotel on Calle 5.

"Buenas... how much?" (on the wall I see 35,000)

The proprieter pulls out a laminated A4 card, dosent say a word, "extranjeros - 20,000."

"Pardon?..."

"For foreigners only 20,000 pesos, for Colombians 35,000 pesos."

"Whys that?"

"Ahhh.... Colombians they come with women, they get drunk, they walk all over the place, make a mess, put the TV up loud..... Foreigners they come to sleep."

"So you charge gringos less?"

"Yes."

"Can I see a room?"

"Sure."

He showed me some rooms but I was not sure about the deal. I asked,

"What if I want to have some women and get drunk?"

"35,000"

It could of been more!

I left and stayed in the Casa Familiar Turistica, 14,000 pesos. Of course no chance of women or booze here.

I think most gringos that rent a place should remember that taking women and having parties is not that nice for a landlord. I was in trouble when I tried to rent for gringos as a co-signer.

Because we all know Colombia is such a quiet, non drinking, non partying, respect your neighbors kinda place.

A girl at Casa Familiar Turistica???

For 14,000 you don't get much more than the wet tongue of the resident dog. The old mama in charge gave me a big smile though when I paid in advance.

I remember a guy from middle east requesting me a tipical place next to avenida sexta. He asked me how many women could take the apartment per night. I translate the question to the landlord: "no more than two same women the total of the time rented", He was thinking to take 5 women per night !!!!
