retirement, retirement, OH the pain of retirement

As I set here counting the days to OCTOBER 10th I can only think about how hard it must be to retire to a land so far away. Simpler way of life, housing cost that is so much less, food that is fresh, people that are real, and a time that is like yesteryear.
Oh... the pain but someone must do it right. Thanks to all for all your good advice and friendship over the last few years

Sonny,
Hope you keep us updated on your transition to Colombia. I will be making the move in about 4 1/2 years with my family. I have already begun to think of the many things that are going to have to be accomplished in order to have a smooth transition.

Sonny says on Sep 9, 2008, 05:09:

The one thing I learned to do many many years ago was to cook. I am a scratch to table cook. I really dont like much from a can. I was very happy growing up learning to make Ice Cream, pull corn from the field, pick green beans, Oranges from the tree, veggies of all sorts from the field. I was raised on a farm as a kid. Fast food hooked me just like many others and the fat went on just like others. Now it is time to go back to "yesteryear" and do the things that made me healthy and happy. SO............this old retired bugger, will take his retirement and not have to worry about my income or where the next meal is coming from. OH, by the way I have lived in Colombia for as much as 2 years at a time. The adjustment will not be as hard as someone just going over there with stars in his eyes. I actually know what I am getting myself into. I must admit that I also found a 3 bedroom 3 bathroom apartment completely furnished, and approximately 2400 sq ft, with all bills paid including high speed internet, 5th floor and elevator, for less then $800.00 per month. Also in one of the nicest location in all of Medellin. This will do until I find a small lot of land so I can build my home. Happy days gang. Life is totally what you make of it. If yiou listen to all the negatives here and never give it a try then you will always say, I wish I had done this. For all the young kids out there, cooking is not so bad. You acturally see the food before it turns colors and looses all of it's vaule. I learned many years ago that your either the solution or your the problem.

Sonny says on Sep 9, 2008, 07:57:

Thanks Bill. That is my desire but for a short time I want to get things setteled and relax. I hope to find a little piece of land away from the city, build my home and enjoy. I do not care much for the city life. I was raised on a farm as a kid and the old saying, "you can take the kid from the farm but you can't take the farm from the kid" I had an opportunity to buy a little Chicken farm that had beautiful fruit trees, cabana, large pool just north of Cali in a city called BUGA. I waited to long. It had a 5 beddroom 3 bath completely furnished home for $20,000.00 USD. Oh well. I love medellin much better and that is where I would love to build. Up toward the airport.

i'll tell, ya'll, i got one butt lookin for a chair. i'm like you, we grew up farming big time and we got up at 4:30 and worked with dad in the fields until school and then after school it was work until the sun went down. primarily alfalfa--like a zillion acres in calif and nevada--but fruit and nuts as well so it was work work work. i learned young about work and worked my ass off all my life. i may have been a wild child and prone to excesses, but i was a work a holic. the first years in colombia, i worked harder than any 5 of my men and did it 7 days a week. now, old gray and fricken tired, i look forward to one ot those chairs in the finca. however, i know i'll want to do work, so we'll do antiques as i love restoring them and selling them. also, around medellin, i know a host of the dealers, as i worked with them and their familes for years. so i'll have work and an easy chair...mom will hang out with the sisters and abuela and mi suegro and i will go around buying antiques and he'll hang out with me while they're being restored. so that's my plan.

Sounds like the same place I grew up. Ours were hay fields. I even had to milk our 3 cows. I remember how hard the work was but when I am with other men that never grew up this way they tend to wonder why I work so hard. Can't teach them that kind of up bringing and hard work. I have a great idea that I would like to talk to you about DWMTE when I get there next month. Maybe PM me and we can talk about it.

lots of people need to be right into Rosales or Parque lleras...........but Bill Turley makes a good point................

I've been to his house..........it's beautiful....I at first thought that it must have cost about $75K when it actually cost far less........

He's near this beautiful little town........just a great place to retire.......without all the hussel bussel and problems..........

When I get my car.........I'll be looking for something like this I think..........but near a city though.

You could get along fine here on a small amount of money.

you can probably define it pretty well yourself....what ever applies as all appearances seem to indicate that just about everything is falling apart. i'm not a doomsday soothsayer, i don't need to be, it's all apparent to the common eye.

can the situation be turned around? i certainly hope so, but i'm not holding my breath. greed controls the world. despair is everywhere. some eat, other's starve...that when there's infinitely more than enough to go around. what to do? what's the solution? i dunno.

but collectively we should be able to 'solutionize' this situation. question is, do we want to.

funny how things change from beginning to end. Like standing ten people back to back. Whispering something in the last persons ear and see what it turns out to be when it hits the first man. This entire subject has proven to me that given enough people the subject changes completely.
FROM RETIREMENT TO ASS HOLES. is it possible that there is more of the later then the first? Just my thoughts and not ment to offend anyone , man or woman or any other

Gringo, It is surly not new just amazing that so many have so little to say but always find a away to completely change the subject. We need a section at PBH that is for: "I don't have anything to add so let me write it here" then it won't matter what they write because it will still have no value .

tomtom! "Work is an addiction that can be overcome."

Do I ever agree with that, but.... if you weren't such a workaholic previously would you be able to be enjoying yourself so much now? I'm going into the workaholic stage in life now so I can enjoy life later on (just got back from a stint of living). I see a few posters on here that talk about being ex-workaholics, but not so sure if they'd be living it up if it hadn't had been for all the money-making beforehand.

I'll be doing "time" for about 5-10 years or so.

Just wondering, would that cushion be real estate? I'm thinking of working myself to near death buying a place so when I leave the states I have income. I'd rather not save up money to start a business in Colombia or somewhere else. (and have that go south)

I'd love to try investing in stocks etc. - but at this point I don't know all that much except:

"buy low, sell high"

One investment I had doubled the other is (literally) with some chinaman who escaped to Canada - so I guess I broke even.

I was a workaholic too, then left for 6 years, now I'm back for round 2 thinking of the day I take off again. Got to think out of the box, like someone said "You''ll never get rich working at the DMV" (but then again, doing so for 20 years, then retiring to Colombia... you might be!)

I remember aways back about your buy in Cartagena (and how you wish you'd bought 10, hell I wish I'dve bought 1). Back then I don't think anyone knew Colombia was going to boom. I knew people with several properties in Santa Marta, yet didn't have any money, guess they're doing OK now. Hopefully wifey and I will get something here in the states to rent out while we go wherever. Got the new country picked out and hoping its boom is just after we get there.

Way back, who'd a thought Medellin would be so popular? Not even a beach!
