Animals know how to display affection much like humans can. I had a dog in London that got lost, sorry mutt, and a lorry driver passing through found him, remarkebly, by the side of the M25. Rather than thanking the lorryman, my dog proceeded to jump me, as if it never wanted to be away from me again, much like the lion was doing.
