Las Fuerzas armadas colombianas rescataron sanos y salvos a la ex candidata presidencial Ingrid Betancourt, a tres estadounidenses y a once militares secuestrados por las Farc en el departamento del Guaviare. Así lo anunció hace pocos minutos el ministro de Defensa, Juan Manuel Santos, en rueda de prensa.

El Ministro señaló que la ex candidata presidencial, cautiva desde febrero de 2002, y los estadounidenses Thomas Howes, Keith Stansell y Marc Gonsalves, secuestrados en el 2003 cuando el avión en que realizaban tareas antidrogas en las selvas de Caquetá cayó en un territorio bajo control rebelde, fueron liberados en un campamento de esa guerrilla.

Añadió que los secuestrados liberados viajan en este momento en helicópteros hacia San José del Guaviare, capital de esa región.

"Esta operación que se denominó Jaque, no tiene precedentes y deja muy en alto la calidad y el profesionalismo de las fuerzas militares colombianas", señaló Santos.

"Mis felicitaciones muy sinceras a nuestros hombres de la Inteligencia del Ejército", añadió el funcionario y felicitó a los generales Freddy Padilla, comandante de las Fuerzas Militares, y Mario Montoya, comandante del Ejército.

"El país y sus seres queridos no tendrán cómo agradecerles semejante operación de rescate", que llevaba más de un año en ejecución, dijo.

Betancourt, los tres contratistas estadounidenses y los once efectivos serán trasladados más tarde a la base aérea de Tolemaida, en el departamento el Tolima.

Para entregar a un grupo de al menos 39 secuestrados, entre ellos Betancourt y los tres estadounidenses, las Farc exigían la liberación de 500 rebeldes presos.

Felicitaciones Colombia!!! I don't know if any shots were fired in the rescue effort, but no injuries were reported, the captors were persuaded to give themselves up and free the hostages. It looks like La Revolucion isn't worth dying for anymore. Good news for putting an end to the nightmare that is FARC.

Also good news is that with this Colombia just gave a big "up yours" to Chavez. My gues is that Colombia got a lot of good information on many things from those supposedly doctored computers that they recovered.
