Replacement for lost US passport?

Any recent experience with replacing a lost/stolen US passport?

Me and three other folks are going to Argentina on Wednesday night. Last night I discovered one of the guys, an American, just lost his passport. Obviously he must have a replacement before moving across any border.

Any idea how long it takes to get a new one from the embassy?

Take a passport photo with you and you should be able to get it done that day. I had mine stolen in Moscow and had a new one the same day.

Yeah, I had one stolen in Lisbon and got a replacement in about thirty minutes . . . but that was pre-2001 when life was easier.

For some reason I was under the impression all US passports had to be issued from the US nowadays - and sent overnight to the respective local embassy.

It would certainly seem a country's embassy could be trusted to have & issue passports.

Go to the US Embassy, (I am guessing you are in Colombia), with some Passport Photos, and they can replace it quite quickly.. I lost mine, in the US, and the State Department had it to me in less than 10 days, so I could travel....

F.Y.I.
Helpful hint for all travelers.
Scan your passport and place in a folder in your e-mail account.
Makes things run much smother at the Embassy.
Also in the same folder have all your credit card #'s and the International to call if lost or stolen.

You are never lost, unless you don't want to be where your at.

yeah right, fantastic idea to store a digital copy of your pp together with your cc details. Boy, you have no idea how fokin easy it is to hack into someone´s email. There are more secure ways to store such data but at least don´t store cc and pp together.

Santoblas- Here, in the US, which I believe is the same at an Embassy, was $25 to the USPS, and $75 to the Department of State... My application was thru the Spokane Passport office at the post office, and serviced in the Seattle Office of the Department of State.. The lady at the post office moved my travel dates up by a week, thinking if they were a bit late, I would make my trip..Turns out, I had my passport on the day she changed it to.. Can't say I would have trusted this strategy in 2007 where it was taking 60 days for a passport;(
