Renting a Room or Apt in Bogota

Hola PBH,

Bueno..... les cuento...

i'm living in buenos aires, planning on moving to bogota in May for 3 months to do some volunteer work and get to know the country...

Is it possible to find a furnished apt for around $400 or a room share for around $250-$300?

I don't mind looking when i get there, I'm just trying to figure out whats reasonable and possible in a safe area (not trendy) so I know what to look for and try to avoid getting totally ripped off....

Les agradezco... Muchas Gracias!!!

Dru

your $400 / $250-300 should find you a place, including all bills/services. But if you browse a little on the forum you will find out that renting an apartment in Colombia can be more than a headache, even more since you probably won´t have a cedula. I guess your best bet is to find a room in a shared apartment/house. German from Platypus rents out places for longtime guests, too. They are separated from his hostel.

I was just looking in los clasificados de El Tiempo and saw a bunch of listings for furnished apts... Generally, do you they require una garantia (como en Buenos Aires), a one year contract, payment upfront or any other thing else of that sort? Gracias!

even worse... they usually require a "fiador" or cosigner. That person is usually required to own property here. Otherwise you are to pay all rent upfront which can cause more problems. Browse this forum a bit and you will find out.

and since you posted in "friendly talkzone"... to browse the forum on your subject look at "renting, selling & meetups"

You can share a flat for $250-$300 easily, even less. They advertise them in El Tiempo (sadly not on the website). Sundays always have the best ads. You shouldn't have to pay more than $250-$300, whatever Gabberhead says or thinks.

Lauthra is correct of course but you have to work at getting an apartment in Bogota. You will not find a luxury apartment at that price but you can find something safe and clean. Be ready to do some negotiating and if you are looking for long term I suggest you hire a lawyer to help you. A lawyer will not charge you much and often they will cosign for you.
