Brasilieiro, This is what bf and I did in Cartagena: We took taxis everywhere within Cartagena, but then we felt like going to BAQ and Santa Marta, so we rented a car. Taking buses is a bitch, they take a lot longer etc etc...If you are traveling with a Colombian who can drive around, then renting a car isnt such a bad idea. If you are traveling on your own you should probably ask hotel staff to get you a cab they know, and pay the driver by the hour. I have not seen those in Cartagena, there are some in Bogota and I assume medellin, they're white taxis you can hire for around 20k pesos the hour (petrol included).

Please Don't... unless you are experienced in driving in Latin America. To be charitable, Colombian drivers are aggressive. In addition car rental is EXPENSIVE. If you do rent bring your camera and record every bit of damage, no matter how small, and make SURE it is listed on the rental agreement. Take the insurance. Bring a credit card only to use for car rental. It is not unusual for the company to place a "hold" on say 6,7 thousand USD as a hedge against damage. DO NOT DEPEND on the usual credit card offer of rental vehicle insurance or your USA auto insurance without checking with the company(s)first.

I have no real problem with bus travel( one hell-of-a lot cheaper). The trip from Cartagena to Santa Marta is not too long, about 200km, and the road is good.

The car will likely cost between 80/100 USD a day and I would guess over $2.000 USD for a month. The wife and I have used Budget in Cartagena. Don't even think about driving into the Old Walled City. For local Cartagena transportation take the buses-cost of no more than 1.000/1.200 pesos-that's all we use when we visit Cartagena.

Oh please... DO NOT... ... rent a car in Colombia. My husband and I wanted to rent a car for a day to go to El Peñol and the total cost was about $250USD. Forget that, renting a car there is way too expensive. Please use taxis to get you anywhere. You can even ask the taxi driver to be your driver for the day and it will be so much cheaper. My uncle used to do it for $20/day and he knew the ins and outs of Medellín which foreigners liked.
