Wanted to find out what PBH members thoughts are on renting a car in Colombia... Yeah or Ney... I know that cabs rides are pretty cheap and that local buses go everywhere... So, it may not be necessary to rent a car... But, I'll be in Pereira and traveling to Bogoto, Medellin and/or Cali... and wanted to see if it's even worth the $$$$....

Philly says on Jul 3, 2007, 16:18: Great ideal, however please be very careful. I hope you are traveling with someone from Colombia? The POLICE will harrass you. If you do decide to rent, make sure you get unlimited miles. I have always rented a car. I hope you are an excellent driver. Driving in Bogota is like driving in New York City, Driving in the mountains is also a blast. I personally loved it. Also, make sure you always have your lights on in the mountains, it is a huge fine if you get pulled over without lights. Having someone from Colombia will help you out with the police. I can not count how many times I had to pay the police off.(keep small bills handy) I have driven from Bogota to Melgar, Bogota to Cartagena, and Bogota to Manizales. All trips have a story within itselves. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

vicshere says on Jul 3, 2007, 16:41: really police bother you???? for nothing or for a reason?? I never had a problem with the police unless I was doing something wrong like getting caught passing on a curve...as for lights....they must be on at all times when outside of a populated area like a city or town.....my advice is use buses from town to town and taxis inside the towns or cities....the main problem is cars are very expensive to rent ... a small car may rent for like 80,000 to 110,000 per day which down here is a shit load of money...and be very careful about paying off the police as they are starting to change their attitude in that department listo |

webmanco says on Jul 3, 2007, 18:07: Driving thru Colombia and being able to stop whenever you want is nice. The one time I got kind of asked for money was by the Traffic police going out Valledupar to La Guajira, the guy ask for everything until he got me for something. But, I'm going to start making some assumptions here.... Which means I might actually end up making an ass out of myself ..........Thu 04 17, 2008 11:34 am |

msaucey says on Jul 18, 2007, 15:15: Okay, so I just came back from driving through Mexico... And if my memory serves me right... The driving conditions are pretty much the same... I think I'll be okay renting a car.... I'll probably go ahead and rent the car... Worst case scenario, I'll have one of my cousins drive...
