Gringoinbogota,The area a Gringoinbogota,

The area around Pereira is very safe. It is VERY common for people to rent Fincas in the coffee region, from north of Medellín (St Fe de Antioquia) all the way south through Armernia. If you look in the El Colombiano in Medellín, you will see many many adds for renting Fincas. The FARC and ELN are nowhere to be found in this area, and when they were, the AUC were paid by the Finca owners to protect them agains the FARC.

People here own Fincas and try to generate money off them, just like people do in the US with second properties, whether it be homes, summer homes, or cottages. Last week I spent the weekend at my bosses finca about an hour north east of Medellín, and the week before that, at a Finca of one of my students 1 hour east of Medellín. Both these people frequently rent out their Fincas, use their Fincas, and let their friends stay for free.

I know a few Gringos here in Antioquia who have rented Fincas all through the coffee region, and I also know of many Paisas who head in all directions on Fridays to spend the weekends at their own Fincas, their friends Fincas, or rented Fincas, whether it be 45 minutes outside of Medellín, or outside of Manizales or Periera.

I drove through this entire region, it is very nice, with Fincas everywhere, and the only guns you see are at the 5 army checkpoints you must pass from Medellín to Manizales/Periera/Armenia.

Paola,

I don't know any specifically, but there are many choices in this area. Perhaps consult the newspapers of Periera or Manizales. The area is very safe, and you will love it. I doubt the FARC will be renting you a Finca in this area, so don't be scared by someone in Bogotá

I own a finca, no problem at all in there, i am renovating it now to start rent it for next year, although my main purpose of this finca was to have a nice relaxing place when i go to Colombia, not to rent it. My parents got few animal there now, specially chickens and they bring a lot of the stuff that the finca produce like yuca, naranja, eggs, coconuts etc and sell them in Villavicencio. people like the products.

My mother-in-law has a finca about 20 miles outside of Monteria. It's really like a small farm where she has pigs, chickens, ducks, cattle, etc. She has had several people living there in the past caring for the place and they have not been reliable or trustworthy at all. Some of them would steal or allow other people to steal animals. If there was some money in it and they had a gringo to sell, I am sure they would have sold him or her as well.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

HOLA PAOLA Hola......

Sueerte y cuidate.

I'm actuallyu with GIB on this one Much as i think security concerns are overrated here, I agree with him on this one. The common misconception is that cities are the dangerous places and rural areas are more tranquil. I have found the reverse to be true in many cases, and not just in Colombia. People tend to think that because there are no police sirens there is no danger! In the cities often you are surrounded by lots of people and that in itself makes the situation more secure in many ways.

Too bad GIB didn't showup at Webmanco's last Thurs I could have had both GIB & Rubiazo photographed, while they wax expertly about security in the eje-cafetero...

As it is I did get pics of Rubiazo while he crooned the crowd with rock and ballads.

GIB I can't comment on Periera, but I'm extremely aware of the geographical variability of the rural troubles in Colombia. I've spent weekends in rural parts, where 300 km away I wouldn't dream whisper my presence.

I agree that the city=safer/rural=dangerous generalization is the easiest rule of thumb for visitors to Colombia, but for those with the interest and ability to dig deeper for information, it does break down.

As for this whole gringo thing, I think it is a fallacy to assume all those who post Qs here on PBH are dayglow-flourescent "gringos". Foreigners (especially people who travel from the immigrant-populated nations) come in all shapes and colours. Look at her handle.. what if the OP is a Colombian living abroad wanting to treat relatives out for a weekend?

Fincas and GIB GIB, I still do not get it, you are here asking about how much your life is worth, you have the most horrific stories to tell about every day of your life and you are still around? I do not think people are here to prove anything, you are the only one on a constant basis trying to prove what a brave man you are by being still here. For the rest of us, it is just normal life in Colombia, where there are dangers in some areas, less dangers in others and no dangers in others. And by the way nice story about Cali, that is a new one for me although now that I think about it, with you, stories are always new.

Paola, about Fincas do a search also on Haciendas del Cafe, there are several travel agents that specialize on fincas, there is one which I do not recall the name on 79th and 8th in Bogotá which is famous among diplomats and expats for them and their families, as the places seem to be top quality. And if outside Armenia is OK with you Paola, PM me and I will give the Phone # of a place I highly recommend. I have been there several times with the gringos that are not the kidapable kind (you know like multinational high executives, expats you know) maybe it is a little more dangerous for other gringos that are more special like some on this site.

GIB You are such a sad case gringo, and yes I have no idea why you are here, but then again I do not really care, on the contrary I wish you did not live here. And opposite to what you think I know what it is for gringos to live here, specially wealthy expat guys and their families as I deal with them every day, hear there stories and see how happy they are. And sorry for you if you think I do not live here as I do, and I also lived in your country and no I did not like it much anyhow, but was never as rude and uncultured as you are to live there, and constantly bash and insult my host country, specially from my small and ignorant perspective after only 5 years of living there.

I will start respecting your opinion, once it sounds like an opinion and not a constant insult on anything Colombian. You complain on every single thread about everything, you insult everything Colombian, and therefore you lost all credibility. If this was not a public site full of inocent visitors I would not give a s.... about your posts, but unfortunatelly to many people are affected by your misinformation, too many people from this My country, just because you have to satisfy you ego.

Say what you want, people are not stupid. Just a small brush at your posts and anybody can see what I mean. No need to answer to pile of crap anymore. And no Colombia is not rose color, like no country in the world is either, we are all full of good, not so good, bad and very bad, but a finca in Pereira is much more on the good side than what you would like it to be. Sad for you, you miss it, not the rest of us.

Caballista says on Sep 21, 2005, 21:38:

Exitos.
