Renewing Colombian Cedula in the USA

Well last night my wife tells me she has to renew her cedula. My inquiry as to why she didn't do that while we were just there for three weeks induced a frosty atmosphere.

Entonces...can anyone tell me the process at a Colombian consulate in the USA (Houston)? After three hours on the phone I cannot get a live person.

I assume she will have to appear in person at the consulate with a photograph and give a fingerprint.

Can anyone confirm the exact proceedure?

Have her get her US citizenship ( that's why she's with you right? )

Once she has her US citizenship she can toss out her worthless cedula , Colombian citizenship isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Greatful...She will obtain US citizenship...when she is eligible. Even if that were tomorrow it (US citizenship) is pretty much useless in Colombia. We/She transacts all business and it saves a ton of money and headaches.

Esanch...thanks. I have been trying for days. Their website says 9-2. I will try promptly at nine tomorrow.

Their link to e-mail is broken.

I may even do the old fashioned thing and mail a letter.

I want to avoid two trips or even one if at all possible. It is too darn close to the Galleria.

Why does she have to renew her cedula? My wife only did it because we were married and needed to show new name. After the application it took well over a year to get her new card.

That is why I would like to actually SPEAK with someone at one of the Consulates. My wife thinks it is because they are going to a new style of card. I presume with a chip or magnetic strip. She thinks she has until 2010 but I'd like to take care of it now. Her current card is 31 years old.

As of December 31, 2009, the "old" laminated white and the light brown colored cédulas will expire. Mrs. Gator has been waiting for eight months.

I noticed on the Houston's Colombian embassy webpage a connection where it seems to have a list of people who's cedulas are ready. I guess they got tired of phone calls.

It's strange the cedulas take so long. A passport is same day.

I feel a need to relate my experience with the Colombian Consul in Miami. I got a job offer in Bogota so I went with my wife when she started to get her "menage" squared away. I asked a young man behind the desk what I needed to do to get a Visa to work in Colombia. He asked me if we were married in Colombia? O said no,here in the USA, then go to that office. We went and the person in that office performed a "wedding Service". The same young man asked me if I had a photo, no then go to that office, done. I showed him the letter with the job offer and my passport, and he asked me if I had $160 and I did. He left for a few minutes then came back, took the money and I had a visa in about 15 minutes. The most friendly and efficient service I could imagine. So different from the way the US Embassy treats Colombians,I am ashamed to say.

So if my cedula expires, I am not Colombian anymore?!, darn and I was there for 2 months.
I used the cedula many times while I was there, and my family just ask me the other day for the number for some legal documents. So I guess mine will expire at the end of this year.
Next time I go I just show my American passport.

Lisa that is fine if you don't need to do business. I find we get much better deals using my wife and her cedula to conduct business. Of course you have family to do that for you as well. In addition I plan on us relocating there on day and we just as soon keep things current.

Your Cédula will not expire until 31 December 2009. BTW if you plan to do anything in Colombia without you cédula your life will be a living hell.

"Next time I go I just show my American passport."
If you are a naturalized US citizen your passport will show Colombia as the place of birth. Get the wrong DAS agent and you could be in for a hassle.

"I don`t even want to think about doing the paper work GGRRR"
There is almost no paper work and no charge and they even took Mrs. Gator's photograph gratis. The only thing you need is to display the original certificate which is returned and know your blood group and RH factor.

If you are in the USA you can renew your cédula at the consulate have jurisdiction were you are living. I THINK you will have to supply photographs and there is a charge of about $20.00 USD

Do NOT expect same day service-Mrs. Gator ages as she waits for the "new" cédula

Hey Gator...send me an e-mail contact.
