a true aside...anybody remember 'dr. hook'?

"....hey, raaay; hey, shortie...tell em who we are...well we're big rock singers, we got golden fingers, and we're loved everywhere we go. we sing about beauty and we sing about truth, for ten thousand dollars a show. we take all kinds of pills, they give us all kinds of thrills, but the thrill we've never known; is the thrill that'll get ya when ya get your picture, on the cover of the rollin stone..." thus, they.

sorry bretheren...seeing raaay's name, i just couldn't resist. brings back memories of marin county in the sixties....CHRIST!!! i;m old. all the bands that were around the bay area in the early 60's the dead, big brother, quicksilver, joy of cooking, steppenwolf, canned heat, hot tuna, janet joplin, the family dog, mouse studios, et al. acid was the gas that kept the show on the road. GOD, how did i live through all that? dr lehry, the feelie festival, avalon ballroom, longshoreman's hall, the golden gate park love in, muir beach, haight ashbury, the good karma cafe, joe sage-witchdoctor...more acid.and more acid. can't be all bad, it got us here.

What kind of weight and dimensions are the items you need to ship?

There is another service that my aunt uses to ship stuff to Paipa, Boyaca. She has shipped some pretty big items, including furniture.

Otherwise, I can ask around for freight companies in town. There are bound to be some around the Port of Houston that ship to Colombia.

Thanks for the help, CG...i am interested in companies who can ship freight items using a pallet system, high-cubes, Less Than Full containers, etc. Things like household items, furniture, workout machines, BBQs...definitely not the UPS small package type stuff....The plan is to order the stuff online while in Colombia, have it delivered to my sons house in Dallas, and then he will arrange to have it shipped via the Houston port to Cartagena.....I dont think it will be a full cargo container each time,....this will be stuff that i would want to bring to Colombia if i cant locate it there......Appreciate the Help you guys!!!!!!!!!

I have been told that some companies will let you split a container with other customers. I'll ask around and see if I can find anything.

In the meantime, the company here in Houston that I mentioned is Colombian Cargo, but their website is down. Their number is 281-498-5924. I think they handle small to medium size shipping, but may be able to direct you to someone who can help.

I'll let you know if I find anything else.

cg and miguel..my experience with consolidators is that the price is through the roof. better fill a can with stuff and if you don't need it, you can sell it for more than you're in it.

They told me that the inside dimension for the High Cube were 7'Wx8'Hx39"D. and the Standard Cube were 7'Wx7'Hx39"D...which doesnt sound like what you are referring to, Doug......does that sound right to you? They are still working on estimates on them for me......

Clavo, one thing I learned in the last few days is that the 20' container holds 7200 pounds. The surveyor from Atlas Van Lines told me that Wednesday. Atlas is packing, transporting, putting it in the container, shipping, bringing it to the apartment in Cartagena, and unpacking for a price that is more than worth it. I do not want to quote it because I have not received the final bill, but it is under $10,000. My 1100 sq. ft. apartment in New York had 2 bedrooms, a study, one bath, dining room, living room, kitchen, and four large closets. My final weight was 7000 pounds and my rooms were full. Not sure if this helps, but thought I would share.

Negative on the apartment - will be at the hotel for at least two months. I will inquire about the company that picks-up, delivers, and unpacks at the apartment. Atlas comes Monday. Shopping for the right things is always a good time! Countdown is one week from tomorrow - unreal.

aaron... the chaps off by about 36,800 lbs. a twenty ft container will hold 44,000 lbs; double that for a 40 fter.

miguel. i think it's a tad larger, as i remember, because i bought two of them and had them altered (put doors in the side and at both ends...container doors.0 that way, when they were sitting somewhere we could use them as storage. they were aluminum high cubes and as i remember--they'be long since been sold--they were 9 1/2' high. making them abit over 8 1/2 high i.d..

aaron. have no clue where that chap got that weight figure, but he's talking out his butt, because his mouth knows better. i've shipped many a 20 and 40 out of buena ventura and ctg.

for both you chaps...the only way and i emphasize, THE ONLY WAY that insurance is valid, and even then collecting on a claim might be an impossibility. is if everything is filmed, inventoried, packed and loaded by your shipper/forwarder. there are no exceptions. however, knowing shipping in and out of colombia and what i have experienced and personally watched with my own eyes, i don'[t think the expense for insurance is worth more than 'spitting in the wind'. you file a claim and the agent says, "sue me"....kinda like colombian for 'fuck you.

Miguel_Clavo says on Oct 20, 2007, 09:41:

I spoke with the shipper and they dont even offer any insurance other than "total loss" which he says if the friggin boat sinks....=(...and he claims to know of no 3rd party insurance people who offer that kind of theft and damage insurance.....

Doug, did you ever have any problems with moisture damage? ie, shipping a cargo container by boat from California to Hawaii there is a real problem with humidity and rain water damage....they suggest buying the silica cargo container bags to absorb the moisture..i have a friend who suffered major moisture damage to her wood furniture which actually warped!! her bedroom set was a complete loss!

Doug, yes I noticed in the other thread that you said it was 44,000. I am not sure if the dimensions of Atlas Van Lines's containers are measured differently or if the weight (7200) is different. I know they meaured my furniture and assigned a weight based on its cubic dimensions as opposed to actual weight. Maybe this is the difference - I have no idea. Maybe he mispoke when he said "20 foot". The gentleman had a PDA and inputted every piece of furniture with its measurements and added an estimate of the amount of boxes (holding our various items) and came up with a figure of 7000 pounds. I am 100% sure you are correct the 20' containers you are speaking of hold 44K #s based on their dimensions.

i'll tell you a story about humidity damage...i had a 40' container in buena ventura ready to board for long beach. because of some dumb ass some where, it didn't get on board. my can sat there for three weeks, waiting for the next ship...back when, only colombian ships (grancolombiana) bore cargo outbound from buena ventura. an entire shipment of furnishings were fouled. leather covered tables and chairs were covered with mould and the leather covers on the tables burst. bad day at black rock! a years work--the manufacturing, etc--and countless thousands of $$$ out the tubes. when i redid the shipment and got it into long beach and finally to the hollywood store, along comes the rodney king riots. can i say more? at that point, the police changed their motto written on their cars, from "to protect and to serve" to "we'll make you king for a day". fin
