Region for DVDs in Colombia???

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what region DVDs Colombia uses?(or can use)

I did a search and some sites say region 4.

which is odd, because they say that Australia is in region 4 too. Which is where I live.. but... we use PAL, and I thought Colombia used NTSC...

How can i make sure i get NTSC region 4 if i want to buy some online for a colombian friend?

anyone know of any good online sites for buying them to send to colombia?

regards
Lorenzo

You are correct in the regions, and also the fact that Colombia uses NTSC (Never The Same Colour). You just need to make sure the titles say NTSC on the package, simple.

Do you want to buy them online on a Colombian site and have them delivered to your friend? That would be the simplest way I should think.

Any suggestions would be good Kernow,

if you know of any stores in colombia which have online sites, and accompanying delivery of goods, let me know!

yep that would be easier and maybe cheaper!

cheers

I am not sure but... I bought a DVD player in the US for my wife in Colombia and everyone said it wouldn't work. It works great with all DVD's in Colombia...those bought on the streets and those rented in the little shops.

Usually the bootlegs are Region All encoded, hence they will work in Colombia and the USA. Some non-bootleg titles in Colombia are also encoded this way.

I purchased a couple of DVDs in Bogotá and sure enough they play on my US player and my UK player once converted to PAL.

So perhaps officially they are Region 4 but in actuality the DVDs are Region All also known as Region 0.

What is all this region stuff about? I bought a samsung DVD player for my relatives in Colombia and every DVD Ive sent them works and every one they have rented over there in their small town has worked.

Zepp It's another brilliant idea form the U.S. The thinking is that pirate DVDs are tolerated to such an extent in various foreign countries that they seriously cut into Hollywood's revenues. So they divided the world into regions. North America, for example, is region 1. I guess they think the average Colombian or Thai is going to go to Tower Records and buy a DVD for 80,000 pesos or the equivalent.
What sucks is that it means I can't always get what I want legally. For example, I wanted to buy Groundhog Day from Amazon. The region 1 version comes with lots of extras and subtitle options and is about 15 or 20 dollars. But it won't play in machines here in Japan becasue Japan is in a different region so all the players sold here are set at the factory not to read stuff from other regions. The version of Groundhog Day available in Japan costs over 50 dollars, is missing all the extra features, and doesn't have the subtitle options I want.
So what did I do? I asked around and found a place in Akihabara (the electronic goods marketplace in Tokyo) that sells "region free" machines. It's made by JVC and the box had been opened outside the factory and the machine was altered to read all DVDs. So I can watch American DVDs. Could, that is. Recently, Hollywood has been adding a new type of beefed up encoding to selected movies that my machine can't read. But there is always another countermeasure. Just type region free into your web search engine and you'll see how many solutions there are.
But if you are buying pirate DVDs, put each one into a machine and make sure it works before you buy it. I did that in Bali last year and about one in ten was a dud. It's even warse with parite DVDs on the street in Colombia. About half of the ones I bought don't play at all. And the ones that do play lack most if not all of the basic DVD funtions and are fuzzy because they were filmed off of movie theater screens. Good parites are copied disk to disk.

Ok so let me get this straight.... I bought a DVD player for my relatives in the US so that means its in Region 1 and can only play region 1 DVD's. So that means any DVD I send them or copy of a DVD I get here will work with that DVD player I got them. Some DVD's they get over there will also work but they could also run into DVD's made over there that will not?

Colombia is region 4 but since I bought them a DVD player from the states they can only run DVD's from region 1?

gotta love US companies

DVD Conversion This subject caame up once before. so I'll re-tell my experience:

I brought a set of Tom Clancy movie dvd's from Blockbuster, here in the United States, so they are region 1 DVD's. And took them to Colombia.

Several years ago, I bought a DVD player from Blockbuster's in Cali,
the store near the Bull Ring (on La Quinta). Upon taking the player home, to our house in Cali, I discovered this DVD region problem. The DVD's would not "Play". The next day, we took the player back to blockbuster and I "Raised hell" about the fact that I could not view the DVD's which I had brought from the U.S.

They took the player back, and converted the player to play any DVD,
whether Colombia or American, at no extra charge. (took about two days).

So this problem CAN BE corrected. BTW, If you have a laptop w/a
DVD drive, the DVD drive, if not used previously, to view DVD's, will "Lock in" on that region coding and you can only view DVD's from that region. This really "Pi**ed me Off", if this happens, you can probably find some "Computer Nerd", who knows how to "Unlock" the Drive.

Not all DVD players can or need to be converted.

Sony players usually have to have the chip replaced, not cheap or available everywhere, usually have to send them to the UK. Plus Sony players are noisy.

Some players JVC, Panasonic etc can be reprogrammed by plugging in a rented EPROM programmer into the back, once again it is popular in the UK but less so elsewhere. JVC players are very good for excellent video especially the blacks.

Finally there are the cheaper Korean brands, Daewoo, Sampo, (some Samsung), APEX etc that for the most part can be reprogrammed by using the remote control hack. The best players are the earlier boxy Daewoo players, their DVD unit is a standard IDE computer model, you can put a nice LiteOn or Teac computer drive after it has been unlocked into any of these Daewoo models. The Daewoo also has an excellent picture and sound but is not progressive scan.
