I have observed that many Colombian nicknames for close relative relying on exaggertions of physical traits don't translate well into English-speaking culture Ie. gordo, flaco, negro, blanco, etc.
I admit that I have difficulty reffering to many of my cousins by their nicknames becuase to me they aren't nice things to say.
I know it is becuase I have been conditioned to react differently to these words (yet I had no problem calling and reffering to my father as "Grumpy"), but since it is acceptable in Colombia I should be able to get over it in Spanish..... shouldn't I?
How do you deal with this?

famsearch says on Sep 26, 2006, 20:29: i take it all in stride... i've earned the nicknames señor plan, señor panico, and mi gringo (that from my wife!). on the other hand, the one sister in law there, i tease with mi pescado preferida (there was a fish that looked just like her at exito, honest! same eyes, same big mouth...), and now that she's flown to and from bogota with my wife, now i call her the pescado volador, and we both get a good laugh. i guess it's all in how you mean it when you say it. dan 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Desideria (Moderator) says on Sep 27, 2006, 00:31: I don't mind as long they keep calling ME with a nice one... (like La Monita). Adri, living down there you get used to it and it doesn't really matter. Anyway, if you don't like your nickname the best thing you can do is to take it with a stride, don't fight it, because Colombians believe in something called "ley del embudo" meaning that they'll tease you even harder. larumberainglesa says on Sep 27, 2006, 05:00: Hey Gorda! aca hay un asiento libre! This was shouted to me once on a bus in Barranquilla when I asked the hostess to let me know when a seat was free nearer the front as it was too hot at the back for me. Of course I didn't take offence - that's just the way it is. Just smiled and 'gracias'and moved seats. After 8 years you get used to it. If they said it to me in the UK however, I'd probably get into a punch up! My son is 'cacheton' and cabezon and he now says it to his Dad too (huevon!)

Olgalucia says on Sep 27, 2006, 05:53: But those are not really nicknames, are they? Wouldn't a nickname be a name to use instead of your name, eg Oscar=Cacho; My cousin Doralba=Pucha; Nelson=Chivo; etc. "I am not bound to please thee with my answers" William Shakespeare 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
