Reality Check - 4/18/2009

I know most gringos wander around Colombia in a daze with visions of sugarbun fairies and hot prepagos satisfying their every need to get laid and drop a lot of dough but it's time for a reality check.

From today's El Meridiano de Cordoba (Monteria):

http://www.elmeridianodecordoba.com.co/index.php?option=com_content&vi...

A band of four sicarios who killed a young soccer player in Planeta Rica on April 15 were captured and brought to jail in Monteria to await trial.

http://www.elmeridianodecordoba.com.co/index.php?option=com_content&vi...

A sicario attempted to kill a guy in a hairdressing salon in Monteria at midday but was foiled in the attempt and escaped on a moto.

http://www.elmeridianodecordoba.com.co/index.php?option=com_content&vi...

Two men who were part of a group of assasins that killed a university student in December, 2007 were captured.

Meanwhile in neighboring Sucre from El Meridiano de Sucre (Sincelejo):

http://www.elmeridianodesucre.com.co/caliente/sabadocaliente/judicial....

A shopkeeper in Sincelejo was shot in the leg by two guys who jumped him as he was coming out of the bathroom.

A man was killed in San Onofre by a couple of assasins.

Two brothers were attacked and wounded by assassins on a moto next to the soccer field in Sincelejo.

I might mention that Monteria and Sincelejo are considered to be among the safest areas of Colombia.

how do these crimes relate to your ordinary law abiding colombian citizen?? or foreigner/tourist?? its obvious to me that these are mostly mafioso hits...you play, you pay.

Too many gringos messing with lower estrato chicas. The cultural differences are way too huge -- These same gringos wouldn't mess with some project living mami or trailer trash back home in the States... WHY O WHY do it in Colombia?!?!!?-rhydewithdis

The same list of crimes can be found in every country. So this is really non-news. So there is crime in Colombia. BFD. There is crime everywhere. Reality Check? Not hardly.

Dream on, gringos, dream on. Yeah it happens everywhere. Keep on telling yourselves that.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

There are plenty of places in Canada where it doesn't happen either.

When people are no longer fazed by murders and murder attempts, then they have been desensitized. I do not think that I could ever feel fully at comfortable in a community if it is a place where my neighbours have lost their sense indignation over inhuman actions - to me it it often will just breed more apathy and the further cheapening of life, detachment from others.

Hey, I live in Monteria (grin). I've been here since January. The econmony here is going down - retail sales are dropping - slowly. Where I live ( 5 ) it's safe - way pay these guys for "security" 50,000 a month and they ride around on bicycles. I do see them around all the time. The street we live on is short and maybe has 10 houses with lots of several little kids. We live in a typical 4/3 plus maids room on a small year for 1,000,000/month. Parts of Monteria are very clean and nice - other parts are terrible. 99% of the people are poor. There are a small minority of the people who are filthy rich - rolex watches, new Land Cruiser Prados, Mercedes 500 series, etc. They wear all white clothes (the guys) and smoke cigars. Hmm, I wonder where they get their money - oh well, it's better not wonder about some things and just accept them. In general the people look at me any many say hi in English. Larry

But Tom, the whole World is changing.

I don't know about you, but in the last 6 years my time in the U.S. was limited to a couple hours in MIA on my return From Perú in 2005.

I have a friend who went back to his hometown of Birmingham maybe 6 or 8 months ago (before things really got bad). He couldn't believe the apparent change in the public sentiment. He said "Half the people seemed to be in denial, and the rest were scared shitless".

Mexican/Colombian drug cartel related crime seems to be popping up all over the U.S. (and not only in the southwest, or major cities).

They're even stealing manhole covers, and ransacking houses for copper plumbing/wiring, etc., same as in Latin America.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7785334.stm But it's being reported most everywhere.

Seems that some people think "everybody's outa step but me".

I agree with tomtom33 about not knowing anyone personally that has been a victim of a violent crime in the US...here in Colombia I probably know 15. Have you ever heard anyone in the US ask if is safe to drive from Chicago to Miami? Probably not. In Colombia you hear that question a lot.

When you live here you are more aware of the crime here. Just passing through for a couple of weeks isn't quite the same. In Cali it appears to me that crime is on the upswing. Crime stats do not tell the whole story here. I would guess that most people would not report a crime here. There is really no good reason. Unless there is some insurance involved. I know I didn't and several of my friends didn"t either

What a stupid reality check. I live 300m from the bankrobbery but what? I don´t care about that. If you are at the wrong place at the wrong moment it´s a problem, but you can´t change this. Why do you don´t make a reality check that the people here in Colombia are much happier than in the states or europe. That´s much more important.

makopp5..................What you obviously fail to see, is to whom this post is directed at. Sure, it does not effect you, or all other tourists, travellers, ex-pats or most everyone else that comes to PBH and Colombia.

Noooooooo.........you silly one..........This post is directed to the many siccaros, assasins (sp) drug runners, low-lifes who spend their day amongst us here on PBH. This site is where a good number of Colombian gang members come for their information on current " hits ' and where they can find out about and keep score of death totals in the various gangs.

It should be a " sticky " , perhaps with the title......" For all PBH Drug gang members "
