Reality Check - 04/27/2009

I was going to give up the experiment after a week but I've gotten such a wonderful response that I'll continue. I'd hate for a reader to go without his dose of mayhem from la costa. Like a nice cold beer, this one's for you!

From El Meridiano de Cordoba (Monteria):

http://www.elmeridianodecordoba.com.co/index.php?option=com_content&vi...

A 500 pound bomb capable of destroying a two kilometer square area was found and deactivated in Tierralta on the grounds of a house formerly owned by AUC leader Cuco Vanoy.

http://www.elmeridianodecordoba.com.co/index.php?option=com_content&vi...

Three different towns in Cordoba experienced a murder yesterday. In San Antero, a man was shot after returning home from taking his kids to school. In San Jose de Ure, a food vendor was killed by a sicario on a moto. Finally in Montelíbano, a man was killed by two assassins as he walked down the street.

http://www.elmeridianodecordoba.com.co/index.php?option=com_content&vi...

A police patrol in Montelíbano was involved in a brief gun battle with a couple of men who abandoned their moto and a gun in order to make their escape.

http://www.elmeridianodecordoba.com.co/index.php?option=com_content&vi...

A demobilized member of the AUC was shot and killed in San Onofre. Another man who was llistening to music with the deceased was wounded.

http://www.elmeridianodecordoba.com.co/index.php?option=com_content&vi...

In Caucasia, police encountered two assassins who had previously killed an elderly man. They shot and killed one and captured the other.

From el Meridiano de Sucre (Sincelejo):

http://www.elmeridianodesucre.com.co/caliente/lunescaliente/judicial.h...

A San Marcos, Sucre man who had been shot by a sicario on a moto died of his wounds in a Barranquilla hospital. Various motives such as money, a dispute or revenge were given for the attack.

In Palmito a costeno and a cachaco stole a Massey Ferguson tractor owned by the city. The men claimed that they needed it to cross a river and that they would bring it back. They didn't.

Compare most of the posts on PBH against my posts and you'll see that mine consistently reflect a certain Colombian reality. It's not a reality that English-speaking gringos like to focus on, in fact it seems to piss them off, but hey it's Colombia. I guess you would prefer more posts on the cheapest way to send your girlfriend money or the cheapest long distance etc.

Yeah, right...another one of UTCs lame excuse of conducting an EXPERIMENT.......TFF...We will have to call these the UClown Colombian Reality Show.....but i do think that it is simply marvelous that the english speaking GRINGO OP living Colombia through the internet and the number of Colombianos living in his house, keeps us informed on how well the Colombian National Police are doing along the coast. The PBH Designated Gringo Internet Journalist Award for 2009 goes to UClown.....=)

"conducting an EXPERIMENT.......TFF."

That is lame, I would have more respect if he just stated he was doing it because he's just a miserable little pr!ck that can't help himself. That's what happens when he ran out of other people's stories to repeat, had to resort to pasting news stories.

I think the there is a subliminal jealousy on the OPs part because it burns him up inside to think that other people are enjoying and experiencing the Colombian culture, and the OP is stuck in Nowheresville Texas...kind of like being all dressed up and nowhere to go.....must be really frustrating and quite possible make a person quite bitter, i might add

Keep these reports coming......also could you add some stories about how elderly gringos can wine and dine elderly Colombianas with a bunch of kids and then marry them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am having a hell of a time finding any available "the old lady that lived in a shoe" types in Sincelejo. You know, the types that have so many kids they don't know what to do.

The good thing is that in the majority of the reported cases the good guys seem to be winning.Perhaps if there were no police to have a shoot out with,as was the case in the recent past, then we should be worried.

"the UClown Colombian Reality Show....."
hahahahaha.... it is worth reading these just for some of the reactions! Gold!

These checks have sparked quite an entertaining debate. The "reality checks" are quite relevant to Colombia, however I do find it a bit disingenuous to call them reality checks... perhaps 'coastal sincelejo reality checks' would be more appropriate.

He, like a petulant child, just wanted attention, which he recieved, some of it not as he expected, so he went whining to the mods, when he was, rightfully so, brushed off by the mods, he authored his 20th "mods suck, woe is me" thread.

I think I will start a post about the Mods being not in control..............everybody else seems to be doing it.................They deleted my comment on this thread......agggghhhhhhhhhhhhh.........I think I might have a Thermal nuclear breakdown.

However...............perhaps I should apoligize for my nasty comment.............UC,......I am so sorry for calling you " dumb ". After my comment was deleted, I began to have a really hard look at my self. It was not nice to call you " dumb ". Either way, it was a severe punishment, having my comment deleted for simply calling you " dumb ", which, of course, I now profusely apoligise for...........calling you " dumb ", that is. I could understand if it had been deleted for calling you a " stupid dumb f##k ", but I would never call you a " stupid dumb f##k. I like to be nice.

How about this for a reality check? These items are items from two COLOMBIAN newspapers written by COLOMBIANS for other COLOMBIANS to read. To hear some of you guys tell it, it's all crap written by gringos to tear down Colombia. It also appears that you assume the items are all bad. As one poster noted in many of the items the good guys prevail. Others are amusing like the costeno and the cachaco stealing the tractor or the thieves giving papaya and getting caught as a result. My mother-in-law is a big deal in Monteria and we always read El Meridiano to get a good laugh.

Ahh... The witty repartee from some here is amusing. The solution is a VERY simple one for those who disagree with UC but, for whatever reason, they fail to use common sense and simply not read the post. WOW! Amazingly simple yet a few "adults" participating in this forum have yet to use this option. Why? Is it because they prefer to attempt to insight and or antagonize the OP or is it they haven't, after all their years in existence, learned how to function in society where the diversity of personalities and opinions is as different and plentiful as the fruits of Colombia.

machin: Don't put UC on ignore that would be a sign of defeat for you and I KNOW you don't want to admit defeat. Better to have the strength to simply refrain from reading his post and in doing so YOU WIN!.

MC: Why would you say that? Me thinks you have missed the point of my comment. I have no problem with the post, the poster or those voicing their objections to the post. I only attempted to assist those who have voiced their strong objections, nothing more nothing less. I actually think the post are what this site was created for, but I also think those who don't like it should either refrain from reading them and stop their senseless ranting or better yet create their own post highlighting all the good Colombia has to offer. Peace!

RAAAY says on Apr 29, 2009, 05:25:

Satan..........One point is , these posts are not put here to inform. They are gathered up only for the purpose to annoy. They are put here to satisfy the o/p's desire for attention.

Furtheremore, these are the opposite of " reality checks " One gets a reality check, to highlight the difference in the perception. The whole world knows Colombia's record of problems. One would have to be living in a cave, or perhaps in remote Texasto be surprised of stories of problems in Colombia. This is the reality. No one needs a reality check to be made aware of violence/crime here.

The actual reality check that needs to be given is that the violence/crime in Colombia is not as rampant as people's perception. Statistically speaking, there are very rare instances of violence being perpetrated on tourists, travellers or ex-pats. From that point of view, Colombia ranks as a very safe country to visit. This is simply a fact. There are all sorts of other issues in Colombia, FARC, drug business, paras etc etc etc. The reality check, for people that come to PBH for information on Colombia, is that these other issues will not affect them in their travels.

These posts are simply an easy way for the o/p to satisfy his desire for attention. These posts simply highlight the o/p's propensity to be malicious.

Colombia is a place that many on this board have come to have a great fondness for. It is a place with a tragic history and many current problems. Most people would like to see Colombia strengthen and improve in many ways. This begins with highlighting the positive whilst understanding and being aware of the negatives. I's so easy to bring things down

Colombians are very proud of their country. They have and continue to overcome, all sorts of adversity. They are fully aware of the perception of their country. They rightly would like to change this perception. They would like to give foreigners a " reality check ". Colombia is not as bad as you think. They will shout this from the rooftops and encourage you to come visit. They will point out that they have not overcome all the problems and that you need to take precautions in their country. Some would like to take an idiot, whose idea of attention seeking, is to highlight the negatives of their homeland and have a little chat with him down a dark alley.

Well stated RAAY,

"Some would like to take an idiot, whose idea of attention seeking, is to highlight the negatives of their homeland and have a little chat with him down a dark alley."

Ironic that the same ones that would have a chat with him about this are the very same people he idolyzes on posts on PBH like a little school girl with a crush.
