Real Gringos/Fake Latinos

real gringos are American. real Americans are Anglo Saxon. so if you are Irish or French, you are not a gringo. Irish are celtics. French are Latin. Italians are the original Latins so all those mestizos in Central/South America claiming to be Latin bettere step off. they are Indio. Latin was a Roman language spoken by the people of the Roman empire. Rome is in Italy.

this is too much tonight - I give up My shift is over ... my bed is calling ... and I have been made a Latino because of my French/Italian heritage. So, since Americans live in North/Central/South America, I am also a real American, and I have Anglo-Saxon heritage as well, so I am a gringo too. Therefore I am a gringo latino ... or is latino gringo correct? Wait, I almost forgot I am 1/4 Native American. Therefore I am indio latino gringo, or latino indio gringo, or gringo latino indio ... Did I get this right? Hey, I forgot the Celts originally lived on the continent before they wandered off to Ireland ... so I am celtic indio gringo latino .... welcome to my nightmare, I am a bastard, I belong to four races! shoot me now ... good night everybody ...

Actually to be classed a Celt one only needs to speak a Celtic language. The people that made up what we loosely term Celts were made up of many peoples bound together by a then common language that we call proto-Celtic. This later divided as the people went to various regions of Europe and became the languages we have today. Just because you are from Ireland or Scotland does not make you Celtic.

Celtic languages, especially the Brythonic branch are very closely tied to Latin and are sometimes also referred to as romance languages.

I have a friend in Brazil that is learning Cornish (don't ask why), so technically he will become a Celt simply because he has learned the language.

And as almost all European languages, including Latin are originally from the Indian sub-continent we should all start calling ourselves Indian. So why do people get upset when they call tech support for their PC and get a guy in Mumbai?

Chicharron At the risk of lending credence to the initial post, language often does go very far in defining national identity. The Quebec succession movement has been largely driven by the language difference with the rest of Canada.

Also, although I like their culture in general, I think the refusal of many Latin / Hispanic immigrants to learn English and/or consider it their primary language after settling here in the U.S., is creating a separate "America" and could very well become a serious problem in the future.

"gringos are American"
Any Latin American will be confused by this - in Colombia i have been taught not to call people from the US 'Americans' as 'America' refers to anywhere from Canada to the southern tip of Chile. Problem is in English we don't have a name for people from the US, they have made 'American' theirs - and technically it's wrong: Mexicans are Americans, Brazilians are Americans, Bolivians are Americans, Colombians are Americans etc. etc. So now i just say 'yanks' or 'Gringos' (niether meant offensively) for people from the US - any other suggestions!?!?

MORGUS i will have to disagree with you on this one!!!! First of all we are not Latin!! We are Latinos!!

Latin is a medieval language from the Middle Ages and the renaissance times! It’s a skilled used in many professions such as Classics, Theology, Philosophy and History.

Latinos = Latino America or Latin America (Central and South America)

Gringos = Americans and Americans = English Background!!!
But wait a minute!!!
Weren’t Americans Indians too???

Yes they were!! North America was populated by Indians before the English came along! So does that make an American gringo an Indian too??? I guess so!

Latinos come from different races we are a mixture of everything and yea Central and South America was populated by Indians before the Europeans and the Africans came along! My mum’s has Indigenous and black background, my dad’s family are light skin with Spanish and indigenous backgrounds. So what does that make me?? I don’t know all I know is that I’m proud of being what I am whether is India or not!

P.S I thought you might know this…Colombians are a mixture of everything! There are mestizos, cholos, mulattos, white from European backgrounds like most paisas, black afrocolombianos like the people from the pacific coast (choco, Buenaventura) and Indians from the Atlantic coast, gypsy groups known as the rom, other mixed races and not forgetting our very own indigenous people who we are very proud of!

I can also assume that he hasn't read much history. Quote: "well Ms Gomez, the difference is in North America all the Indians were killed and not much mixing." This is fiction, not fact. Read your history books, Mr. Morgus. The fact is that about every fourth person in the United states claims to be "part Indian", myself included, and many tribes were left intact. The US isn't as mixed as some South American countries, particularly Colombia, but . . .
