Read very good things about Popoyan

in Feb. I was in Mde, Cgt, and Tananga-Santa Marta. We Liked Mde and Cartagena the best. I might be going back this summer, but I'm pretty sure I will be there in November.
This time it will be Cali, Mde, and the San Gil-Popoyan area, maybe. I've read really good things about Popoyan, yet I don't see it talked about much here. Is that because it's in Farc territory, from what I read it seemed that Popoyand hadn't suffered much by the infighting. Also, is there a university there?
I'm really looking for a place to spend a good deal of time at, the problem is that I'm torn between mountains and beach. I though Sta. Mrta would be perfect, but I really didn't dig it that much, mayvbe I should just give it another try. It's just the women of Mde are probably the prettiest I've ever seen. I would hate to make big decisions with only prurient motives, but damn was it nice to see pretty women everywhere. So what's Popoyan like?

Popayán It's a small town, very peaceful, nice weather, there's Universidad del Cauca, it's a small town for students...looooot's of drinking...but not many places to party (if that's what you're looking for)

More on Popayán Claudia82 is right. Very peaceful and nice weather. You can see more about Popayán at this site: http://www.rtspecialties.com/tobar/ (pictures, with text in Spanish) There is music happening there: reggae, calypso, salsa, merengue, cumbia, and romantic ballads. The people are beautiful. I remember very pleasant visits to art museums and a natural sciences museum. Most people seem to think of Popayán around Easter time. I would urge you to visit at any time of the year.

I have traveled to many of the surrounding areas: Piendamo, Silvia, Cajibio, Coconuco, etc. and met many good people. Now I understand the outlying areas are not as safe nor the ground approaches. But flying into Popayán should be no problem.

Another English language site on Popayan is:

I plan to visit Popayán again next year... ¡y ahora tengo más ganas que nunca!

If You Want to Fly... you are limited, for the most part, to Aires and an airline run by the Colombian Air Force called Satena. They have flights to Popayán from Bogotá, Cali and Quibdó. If you want to reach out-of-the way places like Apartadó, Bahía Solan, Cúcuta, Florencia, San Vicente del Caguán and other like places this is the way to go.

Their main office is, of course, Bogotá telephone 01 900 331 7100 or in Bogotá: 423 8530. I have flown them and the prices are good as is the equipment BUT not as on time as some would like. Just set your clock to Colombian time and don't worry.

Air Routes to Popayán As Gator says Aires provides service.
From Bogotá you can fly Aires to Popayán for around $200,00 to $300,00 depending on the kind of ticket you buy (these prices include airport taxes)

The Aires home page is: http://www.aires.com.co/

Aires is the airline that "unites the best of Colombia" and operates "Canadian planes... 37, 39 and 50 seats....safe, roomy and comfortable"

I am going to take a day bus from Cali. It is a beautiful short trip. And cheaper than flying.

Popayan Think you may be a bit confused about your geography, because San Gil and Popayan are on opposite sides of the country. Popayan is a pretty wee town, though, very safe, but a little conservative and boring after a few days. Surrounding areas like Silvia and Coconuco can be a little edgy from time to time, so check the situation out before you head off there. Popayan´s only a couple of hours by bus from Cali, too. Have fun.

Bus You could take a bus from Cali to Popayan, it's only a 2 hours ride and te round trip is about 40 thousand pesos. The road is safer than it was a few years ago but the safest days to go to Popayán are on weekends when the security in roads increases

Popayan I spent like a week there. Unless things have changed, the thing that most impressed me was the cleanliness. I remember white buildings (houses), no grass, and the most impeccably clean streets you've ever seen.
