Re-Entry into the US with a Green Card???

Help please/ My wife and I are returning to Barranquilla in a couple of weeks. This is our first trip back since she got her green card. She still has her Colombian passport. Does anybody know if there is anything differen we need to do on re-entry into the US?

Generally Speaking... all she will need is her "green card." If she is out for more than one year(six months to be on the the safe side) she would have to apply for a Reentry Permit. 99.9% of the time there is no problem for reentry-except for the damn lines for non-us citizens, especially in Miami. It might be a good idea to tuck several things away and carry with me to show she has not been out of the USA for an extended period of time-telephone bills, school record, recent correspondence, etc., etc.

She will need, of course, to have her passport to exit the USA and enter Colombia and she should take her cedula also.

Like Gator said............ No problem. My wife's done it several times in the past few years. Long as the perm-res card is valid, it's not a big deal! Passport will be stamped on exit from US and entry/exit from Colombia for proof of how long she was out of the US.

Jlove - she can apply for an AP or you can wait till she gets her Green card. Advance Parole - AP allows one to travel out of USA while the AOS is pending. (AOS - Application for Adjustment Of Status (or Green card.)) Good Luck

AP & AOS My wife's AP came about two months after we filed for the Adjustment of Status (AOS). Her EAD came about a month after that and her/our AOS interview is scheduled for a month after that (i.e. next week!!!)

So, best case scenario: she steps off the plane and has the necessary translations in hand. You have all the necessary AOS/AP/EAD (if necessary) paperwork ready for signing. Then you go to the little wedding chapel and get married, she would have to get her vaccination supplement signed by an authorized doctor, and you would have to wait for the wedding to be recorded by the state/county. (For us, that took a week)

So, figure you'd be ready to send in the packet a two weeks after she arrives. Add 6-8 weeks for processing and you could have the A/P forms in hand in less than three months.

Of course, all this begs the question of "what's the rush" if is she marrying you to live in the U.S.?

Green Card Holders " 99.9% of the time there is no problem for reentry-except for the damn lines for non-us citizens, especially in Miami. "

Green Card holders (US Residents) and US Citizens use the same lines. The signs should say "US REsidents and Citizens" but if they don't just go to the US Citizen lines. The only difference is they will ask green card holders how long they have been out of the country.

Good Luck and Enjoy when she arrives. Hola - My wife arrived in the end of September 2005 on a fiance (K-1) visa. We applied for advance parole shortly after our wedding in middle of November and she received her papers to travel to colombian and return to the US at the end of February. Generally 60 days after your wedding and filing of advance parole paperwork. Chao.

Make sure she has that cedula card? We went back to Colobia in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. Each time the wife had her resident alien card and Colombian passport and no problems til the 20004 trip where they wanted to see this cedula card. A national identity card which we anti-illegal immigrant folks want here in the US and all the illegals carry in their countries of origin but don't want in the United States cause they are afraid of more deportations if a national card is issued here in the US. Ironic it ain't it?

Make sure she saves her cedula aand travels with it as we are finding out!
