Correa says he will not restore relations with Colombia
Monday, 30 March 2009 07:47
Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said Sunday his country will not restore relations with Colombia while he is Head of State.
"We will not restore relations. At least, not as long as I am President," Correa said nearly 13 months after his country broke off all diplomatic ties with its northern neighbor because of a cross-border attack that killed 26 people in a FARC camp on Ecuadorean territory.
Ecuador gave Colombia five conditions to restore relations, but according to the Ecuadorean President, Colombia's President Álvaro Uribe has done "nothing" to restore relations.
The demands are about increasing Colombian military on the common border to prevent the incursion of illegal armed groups and the handing over of intelligence information about the alleged presence of guerrillas in Ecuador.
Colombia says it sent 27,000 troops to the southern border to improve security, but Correo denies this.

rca_rodrigo says on Mar 30, 2009, 22:47: Ecuador has a long fight (almost since 1950's, in papers) with Peru about their common borders. Now that uribe did something it had to be done years ago, Mr Correa thinks that his neighbor -Colombia- is starting another war against the people of ecuador. Nothing as far from the truth as his short vision of the colombian brotherhood with Ecuador. It's really sad that mr Correa, Chavez's puppet, had done a play in favor of the guerrilla and moreover, he is very frustrated because Uribe never asked him for permision to attack the biggest problem that Colombia have. Uribe is not stupid and he was aware that Ecuador is very permissive with those insurgents. Correa is also very angry because he is waiting (and he will be for a long time) of listening from Uribe's mouth "I'm sorry". The night of March 2th 2008 demostrated the roll of the leftist goverments have in this side of the world: let the democracy be joke for the terrorists. Correa's ideas, as Chavez's thoughts, will lead to unsustainability of their countries and the very same people that elected them, will claim a new leadership, especially by state, working people, who demonstrated an attempt to do something for the countries governance, as Uribe has been doing during these years.
