ColombianoGringo (Moderator) says on Aug 13, 2008, 09:54: Swinn, Is it really necessary to start several new threads for what is essentially the same topic? You have two just for Medellin. I agree that there is a lot of racism towards black people in Colombia and have no problem with you discussing it, but it would be better to have the conversation in one thread instead of spreading out over several.

august says on Aug 13, 2008, 09:55: Swinn, I admit that I haven´t yet had the chance to watch any of the 4 videos you posted today and yesterday and I will get to that, but I was wondering if it might be more useful in terms of sparking a constructive dialog about race relations if instead of the term "racism," one was to refer more to its manifestations. I think the term "racism" is so culturally heavy that it rarely turns into anything more than putting white people on the defensive, mostly because almost no one is going to self-apply the term. Now if you pose a theme such as "The role of skin color in applying for a job in Medellín," that´s interesting and there´s more to discuss, in my opinion. Anything with the terms "racialized" or "racial" is also much more helpful, again, in my opinion. Eitherway, thanks for keeping important topics alive.

ColombianoGringo (Moderator) says on Aug 13, 2008, 10:04: No problem Swinn. I'm in agreement on the racism issue. I think that in many ways racism towards black people can be much worse in Colombia than in the US.

billyb says on Aug 14, 2008, 06:39: Colombia is a very racist country, that's not news. I have Spanish in-laws and they think the US is so racist (maybe it is), but they think they are not, but if you've been there, you'll notice that their racism, specially against moros and black africans, makes most of the US look like a bunch of Quakers. My point is, that every fokin country is racist and anybody that thinks otherwise is full of crap.

august says on Aug 14, 2008, 16:29: After viewing this video and the one with the students, as well as sitting in on some events at the Casa de Integracion Afrocolombiana (which I highly recommend), I think what's interesting is how underdeveloped the dialogue about race seems to be here in Colombia. In many ways, the dialogue and the situation are how I imagine the US to have been in the 1950s. Consciousness and even the vocabulary to express such consciousness seem to be very much in the early stages of development here. Then again, one must always be cautious with these comparisions - a Chocó concept doesn´t really exist in the US and what do we make of the fact that Colombia already has a federal government minister (of cultura) who is of African descent? Maybe "behind" isn´t quite an accurate way to describe the circumstances in Colombia?

tomtom33 says on Aug 15, 2008, 04:38: You don't need blatant acts of racism to negatively affect the black population. The Paisa "nice" still holds sway. I continue to be absolutely stunned by the bigoted attitudes held by many otherwise intelligent people that I have come to know in Medellín.
