Racism, seeking answers

So there I was, Sunday morning around 8 am pondering my problem. I picked up The New York Times and walked to my favorite lake (below) for a nice quiet moment of reading and reflection.
I’m quite bothered by the fact that I have racism in my heart. I should be concern for all races and not just my people. This is not the way I grew up. Most of my life I’ve surrounded myself with NYC intellectual bleeding heart liberals who taught me different but I’ve failed them.
Does it take a special kind of person NOT to be racist? maybe I don’t have it in me, but then againmost of my dearest friends have all been white, I don’t get it? I’m really confused.
When I sit in Bill Moyers office and we discuss different plights and injustices through out the world, he does not see color, all he sees is pain and that’s when he gets most emotional. For nearly 30 years I’ve stared at his blue eyes, though his face is now showing his age, you still see the intensity for truth, compassion and fair play.
Anyway, I will continue with therapy, but for now I need to concentrate on this problem of racism and put aside my original problem

I think most people have a racist tendency (to judge people by their color). Society subtly encourages and teaches it. Even people who are not "active racists" (ie. they don't act racist) are often "passive racists" (they tend to judge by color, without wanting to). At least that's what I think. When I went to live in Harlem, in the beginning, I was scared of all the black people. That's racism right there. After a while it was normal, but I think there's always some racism. It's like hate: everyone feels hate, even the Dalai Lama, it just depends what you do with it.

Also, there's a strong tendency to make friends with people like you (in color, class, ...). Almost everyone does it, it's a survival thing. So that's pretty normal :)

Staying on topic, and in reference to your picture: We're being invaded from the North by those damn Canadian geese and from the South by illegal aliens. And unlike the geese, cities can't round up the illegals and feed them to the homeless.

Peter, I feel quite safe in Harlem, but put my ass in some places in very white Long Island and I’m shitting bricks with out any probable cause, and when I’m approached in a very friendly way, I’m shocked.
Listen, when I first met “the kid from Brooklyn‿ in a fishing party boat, I wanted to stay away from him as far as possible. When I caught the big fish he walked over and congratulated me
“Congratulating, you Mexican bastard!‿ He said, which made me nearly piss my pants from laughing so hard. From that moment on we insulted each other left and right which is very typical in a NYC party boat. We sit around playing cards and you should hear all the racial chit that goes down, BUT we still end up getting together for barbecues and stuff.

I think I'm going to apply for a grant and write up a research paper titled "Canadian Geese and Illegal Aliens: Similarities Between Two Invasive Species. It will be mean and completely without merit but I bet I could sell it to Tom Tancredo. Ha-ha.

- In Minnesota, it is against the law to disturb a nesting Canadian goose (a certain time of the year when they're sitting on eggs). This is similar to the hands off treatment the anchor babies of illegal aliens receive.

- Once the goose eggs are hatched, however, it's perfectly acceptable to hire dogs to come to your corporate campus a couple of times a week to harass (terrorize?) the geese and drive them to more hospitable environments (or across the street so your neighbor has to deal with them). Also acceptable are noise making devices, fake dead geese and other deterrents. For illegal aliens, we use middle of the night ICE/INS raids to scare the bejeebers out of people.

- Elmo has already mentioned the competition for scarce resources

- etc, etc

On a serious note, I think there's a world of difference between

A) an "active" racist or bigot, who, if given the chance, would hurt or hold back certain people because of some twisted hatred or intolerance and

B) someone who is simply uninformed or who relies too much on stereotypes/pre-judgements/limited exposure.

Since we haven't the gift of omniscience, there's a bit of the latter in all of us.

Rascism, schmacism. What separates us from the lower primates, etc, is our innate ability to control our baser instincts.

To dream, for even a moment, that it is possible to rid ourselves of rascism, bigotry, etc, totally, is just crap. It can't be done.

What's important is- how do we handle it, internally? Do we display it for all to see? Or do we understand ourselves sufficiently to control these thoughts, these impulses.? It's the end result that matters - not the initial impulse, I think.

It's like the US's current fixation on "hate crimes". What crime of passion ISN'T a hate crime? And does it make a bit of difference, WTF a guy was thinking when he killed someone else- unless of course it was self-defense? Of course not- the victim is still dead, whether they died as a cheating spouse, a gay person, whatever. WTF difference does it make, why?

Show me a person who claims to have zero rascism or bigotry in themselves- and I'll show you a major liar. The question is- what does he/she do about it?

Before you throw me out, make sure I pay my bar tab

Here’s my story again. My mother took off with a barranquillero bus driver (worked the Murillo route) while my father was working la Vuelta a Colombia and other ventures which took him to USA. When she left we ended up in the street for a couple years until my father showed up and brought us to USA in the early 60’s.
I did not see my mother from the age of 6 to 22, so for all that time I was a motherless modefoque. . I went back to Quilla in 79 and saw her briefly but did not returned for another 10 years .
From 1990 to present I’ve been going back to curramba every year, sometimes up to 3 or 4 times a year.
5 years ago I decided to start sending her money, thought she never asked for any , but since I was throwing my money away on hookers, I figure I’ll send her a few buck every first of the month. She knows all my disgusting habits and even had my half sister hook me up with the best hookers in south curramba.
She agrees with me, hookers come out a lot cheaper than girlfriends.
So basically I’m still a motherless modefoque. I come from a long line of motherless modefoques, thus my distrust of Colombian women.
Now i go and get drunk with the morph and rubi

Well theres a lot of talk about people being racist and judging others. But that how the mind works.

The brain works by association....if you have (or see) a bad experience with a certain type of person, you might start to avoid the same kind of person in the future.

If you see a lot of beautiful scandinavian blondes on TV or in real life(like I do), if someone mentions their girlfriend is a scandinavian blonde you will think she gorgeous before youve even seen her.

Similarly, if you are walking home down a dark alleyway and there is a noise coming from the bushes, you might get scared. But its only a fox or scunk or something. But your brain doesnt have time to worry about if its a scunk or a guy with an AK47, your body just pumps out the adrenaline anyway, because the subconscious mind is incontrol.

elmo your history lesson is sorta right but a little tilted.
First concerning the Europeans, they are the fightiest bunch of people on the planet, they have been fighting each other and conquering each other and enslaving each other for centuries. Same in the Middle east those folks have beat each other up since the beginning of time.
As for those mexicans wanting to take over parts of the US claiming its theirs. well the indians might have something to say about that. Long before the mexicans came to the southwest that land was run by the american indians, the mexicans actually were given that land by the spanish. you see what has happened here is a starnge switcher roo.

First the land now known as southwestern USA was occupied by only one people the american indians, the Spanish conquered this area, when the spanish left they gave it to the mexicans, the problem is it wasnt theres to give. the indians and mexicans fought over this land for years. then came the european settlers moving westward, these new americans kicked both the mexicans and the indians asses and took the land. some of the land they purchased, some they fought for and won in battle, some they just took, as a result you can see where the borders have ended up.

Some say the Americans dont deserve the land , but if they do not deserve it then who does? who really has claim to this land
1. the present day americans?
2. the present day mexicans?
3. the present day indians?
4. the present day spanish?
5. all of the above should share it?
6. they should all leave because scientist now say that the chinese were the first to actually discover western USA?
7. it really doesnt matter because it is what it is, the United States of America and no one plans on moving anytime soon?
