Racism, is a bit-h!

So there I was, at 6:45 am yesterday morning on a fishing party boat heading to the middle of the Long Island sound. As the breeze gently kissed my face and the sound of seagull fighting for floating piece of chit is heard in the distance, I started pondering a question my therapist had asked during my last session.
Modefouqe, are you racist? which I immediately answer ASBOLUTLY NOT, is impossible to live in a city like NYC and be racist, I’ll be in jail for manslaughter, chit with so many ugly modefoqes from every corner of the globe up in your face.
Anyway, as I sat there looking at the horizon in front and the NYC skyline slowly disappearing from behind, I started thinking about that question and the answer is: .
Yes!! I’m a racist modefoque
How so?
I hate to bring up this overly discussed subject but it proves to me that I’m a racist modefoque.
If those modefoques illegally crossing that border to seek jobs in the USA were blondes from Scandinavia would I care if they disintegrated in the middle of the desert holding on to their children at the same time running from border guards and dodging bullets from MINUTEMEN using them for target practice. Would I be as passionate in defending them, HELL NOOOOOO!!! I could not give a rat’s ass if their pretty blue eyes exploded outta their eye socket from the heat as coyotes tore them to pieces.
I would demand they be jailed and then deported even if their crime was only to work illegally to feed their families.
Now I understand how some here are passionate against looking at these brown people crossing ‘YOUR’ borders. To you guys I apologize, I’m no better than you.
But what I can’ comprehend is some arepa face colombian hating on illegal Mexicans, that chit is just plain ol weird and it don't make no fokin sense! .

Perhaps, maybe they didn't allow you into a hip hop club or got yelled at by a black kid. I bet you never got beaten to a pulp or got chased across the desert or denied a job on the basis of your skin color (please don't cite affirmative action here).

As a hispanic I have been at the butt end of racism when I was a child attending school and I am whitISH, I can't imagine what it is like for very dark skinned latinos who are trying to make it on their own through their hard work (this doesn't include people who married into the states, I am talking about those making it alone, entirely on their own means). Until any of you have walked in those SHOES, I think anything you come back and say to us who have been is pie in the sky.

Tinto (Moderator) says on Aug 31, 2007, 10:57:

I suspect for a lot of people, including yours truly, it has nothing to do with skin color or national origin. It has to do with illegality, a drain on U.S. resources and a demand for non-existent rights (some of which we've foolishly already given).

Fearless prediction: The whole thing might become less of an issue in the next couple of years. The rate of illegal migration zoomed in the last half decade or so; some say it will taper off as the housing/construction industries settle back to earth.

Leeroy says on Aug 31, 2007, 16:31:

Like most sensitive cultural/political issues, racism is simplified and (ironically) blindly stereotyped. Someone is either racist (bad) or not (good), and most of the time racists are white people discriminating against those of darker skin-tone (just like all sexists are men). So it would seem..."Racism is bad" goes the mantra, so there is no need to discuss it any further.

The stereotypical forms of racism (say... skinheads randomly beating up black people, or people of Indian descent receiving verbal abuse on the street) are nowadays far less common than the PC brigade would have you believe. Indeed, not many educated people now would seriously try to argue that one's race determines one's abilities, intelligence or personality (although white people are far superior at getting sun-burnt than black people, so I have notcied).

Nonetheless, the "open-minded liberals" (who, in another twist of irony, swallow their own propoganda just as much as the "closed-minded bigots" that they claim to rally against) use any mention or discussion of race as a part of someone's identity as an opportunity to screech "Racist!!!" whenever possible. I term this "PC justice", an opportunity (they see) to be justifiably confrontational while also taking the moral high-ground. (Despite the reality that accusing someone of being racist rarely, if ever, solves anything or leads to any greater understanding of anything).

Racism is multi-faceted - some facets of it are plain ugly, some have rational/understandable roots, some simply involve a pragmatic and objective "making conclusions on something based (partly) on race". Race and identity are complex but important topics, not something to be merely explained away with a "racist=bad, non-racist=good" dualism.

One's race, like it or not, is a fairly major contributor to one's sense of identity. It can also be a fairly accurate indicator of someone's social background. Humans, being essentially tribal (read: social) animals like to hang around in groups/communities of people that have things in common with each other. We trust people who are similar to us. From an evolutionary point of view, this makes perfect sense. While the PC mantra that we hear repeated everywhere might hopefully (and naively) state again and again "Someone's race doesn't matter! We're all the same! The colour of someone's skin is irrelevant!" the reality is somewhere different. We humans actively classify each other all the time (in terms of who is fat, who is thin, who is clever, who isn't, who is old, who is young, who is female, who we know, who we don't, etc...) - it is ridiculous to suggest that we should somehow be blind to someone's race/ethnicity, yet remain aware of all of these other factors.

(The PC brigade do not stop at racism though, in some circles it is wrong to recognise that someone is a woman, fat, gay, old, disabled, etc... - it almost seems "against the rules" to attempt to classify people at all - which is self-defeating and against human nature)

Just as saying "masturbation is bad, don't do it" will not lead to less masturbaters (only more guilty ones), saying "racism is bad, don't be it" will lead to just as many people classifying people on race, only feeling significantly worse about themselves for having comitted such a crime.

What do I mean when I say "classifying people based on race"?

Like, say, noticing a neighbourhood in a large western city has a predominantly black population, and reasoning (based on statistical evidence and correlation) that it has a higher-than-average crime rate.

Or that Asian people are shorter.

Or that black women have larger breasts than white women.

Or that Chinese-Indonesians are less friendly but more work-savvy than their "native" counterparts.

We generalise and stereotype people all the time - this in itself is not evil, and does not have to lead to evil deeds. While something thinking (or saying) "I just don't like black/white/chinese people" is certainly ignorant, it does not imply inherent evil, or even evil intent. Active negative discrimination (such as beating people up, refusing them jobs etc... based on race) should be legislated against - but thoughts/beliefs should not be and cannot be.

So Elmo feels more sympathy/empathy towards his latin brothers and sisters than some hypothetical Scandinavians? Fair enough. This is not something to feel shame about, nor reason to publicly lament "Oh no - I'm a racist!". Were Elmo to start going around and randomly beating up Scandinavians then we all might have cause for concern, but the former does not automatically equate to the latter.

Someone's race will always play a part as "who they are" to themselves and to others, and many will associate closer feelings of comradeship to those who are members of the same ethnic group. This in itself is nothing to feel guilty about.

Rant over.

morphus says on Aug 31, 2007, 16:48:

I met a guy from Tennesse here in New York City. He was complaining that New Yorkers are'nt friendly. I told him New Yorkers are just paranoid. If you try to start a conversation they will be worried that you are a crackhead or possibly going to mug them.

I'll pitch in 5k toward a hooker for Elmo to commemorate his 5000th post. A little hard bargaining in south BAQ should get one for 10K. Anyone else?

Robert Jorge says on Sep 7, 2007, 00:36:

Elmo, I will take you up on your offer. We will visit NYC, but you gotta visit us in Villavo too. You show us a good time, we will take care of you in the llano. I am not too worried about Mrs. RJ running off with a Colombiano in Queens. If she wanted a Colombiano, she would have left me long before we were married, and stayed in Villavo.

There are no car motors hanging from a tree limb here in my city. I got the foqueing cops called on me for not mowing my grass the right way once. I got fined by my neighborhood association for not having an approved mailbox. I might live in hillbilly heaven, but the redneck riviera is pretty strict and proper. I gotta admit though, if a person walked around here in a burka, they would be stared at and avoided like a US Marine in dress fatigues walking through a pueblo SE of Pasto. I have seen a few Arabs walk around the mall I used to work in. They were probably there because we have a huge military base surrounding our town. Anyway, when they walked down the sidewalk in their black, 8th century robes with hoods and masks, people parted like the Red Sea did for Moses.
