Questions about Colombia!!! Need your knowedge!!!

Hello

I am a 23 year old male from the United States. I have been planning an extended trip to South America for a little while now so I can become fluent in spanish, have some fun, kind of escape America for a while.

Origionally, I planned on Buenos Aires, but lately Colombia has caught my eye. My plan is to stay in one location at a language school until I become fluent enough to travel around the continent.

Which place in Colombia is better for this? Medellin or Cali? Cartanega? Im talking nightlife, the people, the culture, costs of living, etc.

What are the typical costs to live in those places (meals, public transport, clothes). Im trying to live pretty cheaply, as cheap as I can.

I am a professional drummer at the moment, do people like to rock in Colombia? I hear they do in Buenos Aires, but form what I hear about Colombia its all about the salsa (no problem with that, I am exited to learn how to dance)

I am going to end up in Buenos Aires regardless for a period of time, but can anyone make any direct comparisons between BA and Colombia?

Thanks!
Keith

Yeah, people love rock in Colombia. Since you're a musician, I think you need to talk to a guy named Rubito on here.

HERE'S SIMON!!!!

coffee beaner says on Sep 14, 2007, 11:56:

The Rock scene in Medellin is also pretty big and its way cheaper to live in Medellin then Bogota. Also Medellin has better transportation system and the best women in the country in my personal opinion... Medellin also has very good Universities and its more of a college town compared to any other city in Colombia.

boy, you never been to la chinita, murillo, a bunch of places in south curramba.
them modefoque aint got nothing to eat but they sure do have money for booze and music 24/7.
Ofcourse you aint gonna hear Deaf Leopard or wide snake or any of that chit, you gonna hear straight up diomedes and salsa. for some odd reason i can't picture those andean injuns from bogota as hard core party people.
if you want that real rock chit, long island, ny, new jersey, buenos aires and i guess bogota? ok then medellin and cali too.

Cerealkiller says on Sep 14, 2007, 13:16:

Medellin is a cool city, It has a very interesting music scene and rock is extremely popular. Weather is very nice, people are okay but it isnt a BIG city...so its up to your preferences.
Bogota is a big city, people from all over the country, okay partying, although it tends to get old after a while...same music everywhere, not many specialized clubs..but then again thats something you will experience pretty much everywhere in Colombia, weather is kinda crappy...especially if you catch the rainy season.
Cali...hmm, I have been to Cali many times but I have never lived there so I cannot give you a reliable account. I thought it was too hot, okay shopping, okay clubbing...but then again I didnt stay long enough to get sick of it.
Cartagena, never lived there either but it took me a week to realize its too small, dirty, and outside the walled city there is nothing worth seeing. If I were to go back to cartagena, id spend all my time in Hotel Santa Clara getting face masks and pigging out on their awesome breakfasts. But thats IT.

Cerealkiller says on Sep 14, 2007, 13:44:

Simon, I am not getting into this debate again. If you do not agree then tough shit, you can always post your own views. Caracas is a nasty city...so he can end up in Venezuela but not because of me.

BAQ says on Sep 14, 2007, 13:55:

Stay away from the coast, Cartagenia, barranquilla, santa marta ect, they speak REALLY FAST here and if you dont understand any spanish before you arrive here, it will be harder for you to learn. They speak alot slower in Bogota and the accent is different which i think makes it easier to learn. .

What about the various costs of living? Can I get a meal in Medellin and Cali for under $5? How much does a crappy apartment cost a month in American dollars? I am not looking for anything fancy, I am looking to live as cheaply as possible.

venustimon says on Sep 14, 2007, 17:01:

Spanish in CARTAGENA is difficult to understand. It's a different accent. I prefer Bogota, the weather sucks but everything else is pretty cool. I think Cali is a dangerous city. Medellin is very nice, too.

Lisa Zee says on Sep 14, 2007, 17:18:

SIMON, tu eres muy `charro' como decimos en Medellin, o deciamos>LOL

Hey ELMO, como te parece que estoy facinada con DIOMEDES!, que musica tan alegre y sobretodo QUE LETRA!!!!. Me encanta ese que dice: " no me la llames mas, no me la molestes mas, mira que esta estudiando, tiene su novio y se va a casar" Mi querido esta facinado con esa musica y no entiende ni pio!!.

LIsten BAM BAM, go to Medellin, the weather is the best and you will find lots of girls that would love to teach you Spanish, and I heard dico places are compared to Amsterdam.

coffee beaner says on Sep 14, 2007, 17:28:

Bam Bam sounds like Medellin is the place for you, with $5 bucks and under you can get food in lots of places in the city like "Pollos Mario", "Hamburgesas del Oeste", Kokoriko, Frisby and various Colombian restaurants that serve food for less then $5. As far as apartments I can give you an example with an apt my Aunt has rented out, she charges $250K ($125 dollars approx.) in Manrique Central which is strata 3 and the place has 2 rooms, kitchen, living room and a bathroom. The neighborhood is lower middle class / middle class... I don't recommend going cheaper then that since you don't know any Spanish I assume.
Anyway, I am 24 years old and if you want an honest opinion from someone in your age range I suggest Medellin. Good luck!

jaramillo says on Sep 14, 2007, 17:31:

Weather is a matter of preference. I'm from Medellin, city of "eternal spring". Yet, I loved the cool and occasionally rainy weather of Bogota when I went to college. In Bogotá you can walk forever without getting tired.

coffee beaner says on Sep 14, 2007, 17:34:

hey jaramillo, are you a lost uncle of mine??? i am also one of the lucky jaramillo's out there! hahaha

If you want to "kind of escape America" you might want to try kind of Asia. Neither Argentina nor Colombia are the perfect places to "escape America" ....

billyb says on Sep 14, 2007, 19:44:

Or better yet, how about Antartica? You could reall escape America there, but you would be bored as hell :)

john_stark says on Sep 14, 2007, 23:44:

It's always the same cities. Bogota, Cali, Medellin, blah, blah, blah... I guess nobody ever suggests Monteria because it's a hot, dirty, noisy dump of a city run by paracos. Nevertheless it's a city where you can walk around at night without worrying about petty crime and where people like to set up chairs on the sidewalks outside their houses and play cards or talk with passersby. Sure they talk like Elmo but nobody speaks English and I bet he'd learn the local patois in a hurry because he'd have to. The chicas are as hot as the city and quite friendly. I highly recommend it but WTF do I know. Check out the cockfighting ring next to the airport and vote early and often for "El Pollo".

Lcacique says on Sep 14, 2007, 23:47:

Hey Lisa Zee,

The song is "Brindo con el Alma" and I agree, it's excellent!

As far as where to study in Colombia, who wouldn't want to study in La Candelaria (Bogotá). However, you'll enjoy any city that you go to in Colombia!!! While the people on here clearly have there preferences, the real truth is that Colombians are wonderful people. You will gain friends that will end up being more like family. Especially if you make any kind of effort to speak the language and get to know the culture.

Buenos Aires, I've heard some nice things about it; however, I would never choose it over Colombia!

Hoy se nota en la floresta un ambiente de alegría. ¡Y el rumor de ranchería es mas dulce y sabe a fiesta!

Cerealkiller says on Sep 15, 2007, 02:34:

Rubito what I mean is that the clubs never change. You might have some variety in the kind of clubs and all, but at the end of the day chances are you will get sick of them because its always the same places with nothing new to offer. You are still pretty new to bogota...wait two years and you will see what im talking about.

Man Tequila says on Sep 15, 2007, 10:21:

I have spent a little time in both Buenos Aires and a few Colombian cities. These are my impressions.

Buenos Aires has nicer architecture, probably more of "rock" scene, fantastic food, is slightly cheaper than Colombia, has excellent shopping, has tons of book stores and milongas where you can learn that you will never tango well.

Colombians enjoy their own styles of music and dance, but rock music is perhaps only popular in Bogotá. Cartagena is more expensive than Calí or Medellin. I found, on balance, Colombians to be more friendly, down-to-Earth, and interested in talking to you than Argentines. My personal view is that Colombian women are prettier than Argentinas although MANY people would disagree with me. I had more fun in Colombia than I had in Argentina, although both countries are great with good nightlife, and I hope to return to both of them soon myself. Colombia is inexpensive, but Argentina is cheaper still, for the time being.

manINred says on Sep 15, 2007, 11:07:

Man Tequila I have spent time in both places, in Colombia much more, and I agree completely with your summary.

One of the things I love about Colombia is that you can take daytrips to the most beautiful pueblos, and experience a different side of the country every day. The amazing carribbean coast is never very far away, nor is the southern mountainous more indigenous-influenced beauty, and there are so many different cultures in Colombia, something that makes it so endearing.

RussianFred says on Sep 15, 2007, 15:48:

Buenos Aires is one of the cheapest cities in the world. The women are great and the food is good. It taste better than Colombia but less healthy.

I think Medellin is suffering from ID crisis.
The best city to visit is the new city I have envisioned the most modern city in Colombia and in Latin America, Pasto, Colombia!
Let's start with a new airport in Pasto to address all international flights...

People make Pastuso jokes because Pastusos are more indigenous and thus easier to pick on, a common theme worldwide, The same way that Argentinians make fun of Bolivians. And Pasto isn't as great as Medellin, Bogota, Cartagena, Cali, Santa Marta or Baranquila etc...

goin_south says on Sep 22, 2007, 17:07:

isn't as great? in what regard?
I'm not defending Pasto, jus cause my novia happens to live there
and, she's originally 'una calenya', besides...
but... it's a serious question for clarification....
manINred,....

The only Pastusa joke I ever heard was the one, that 'en espanol', is translated as: Why is Pasto considered the Sexiest City in Colombia??? (and, the answer being, when interpreted from the spanish): 'because as soon as you get there you wanna come' (or, the spanish actually meaning: 'YOU WANT TO LEAVE THERE')

So, what are some of the other Pasto Jokes?
And, what do you mean, Pasto is not as great?

And, it's true! As soon as I arrived in Pasto,....I wanted to!!! Well, since it was about an hour or two before New Years Eve 12 .... uh... 'STRAIGHT UP'... SALUTE! Fire was FLYING IN MANY WAYS ::::::))))))))))))) !!!!! jejjjee..
