Question Question

Hey guys,

Can anybody recommend some good business spanish courses in Bogota?

Courses tailored to native spanish speakers who have been doing business in english for too long LOL.

I am trying do a search for la javeriana and some journalism/writing courses/workshops as well but can't find any good resources online.

I would love it if somebody could point me in that direction. I am interested mostly in courses offered in Bogota as I will probably be there in a few months.

Gracias

C.

Gracias Msaucey. I am not making a permanent move as of yet because of a couple of things that are tying me to this city right now, but I'm taking it a day at a time and seeing how everything will pan out.

My spanish is perfect, but the problem is that all my spanish language clients are in dominican and I want to brush up on business spanish that is a bit more traditional and clean, as my future plans include doing business in the region.

Since you already speak excellent Spanish, it sounds like you just need to brush up slightly on using more professional language. Do you need a course to do this? Well obviously I don`t know your situation, it would seem to me wiser to either:

1. Take additional business courses (administration, etc.) in Spanish which would naturally include more professional language and setting, since the language alone would probably come fairly easy to you, or...

2. Find graduate student level and/or advanced journals in a library which include articles geared towards business, corporate psychology and professional business conversation and negotiation.

The back to school thing is kind of fun though.

I believe your spanish is pretty good, maybe what is needed is to let aside the spanglish or slangs from other countries. I had not hear of Colombian Spanish for Business 101, but here is a link. Universidad de La Sabana, on autopista norte.

Surely there's a course in Toronto that you can attend like that, at seneca or somewhere?

MIR, I think a course at Seneca would probably provide English speakers with the basic terms to conduct business in Spanish. Perhaps Colombiche seeks a graduate or post-graduate course designed for business students who already speak fluent Spanish to learn more advanced terms, local terms in specific countries, and how business etiquette differs in specific latino countries?

'Biche, I think your Spanish is way too advanced to study any kind of non native speakers' Spanish instruction.

Maybe the quickest way is self-directed study (perhaps conversation exchange). You could arrange to do this on-campus if you also signed up for the journalism thing.

Or maybe immersion into the environment you want to speak in (a Colombian office). Remember, the rest of us didn't learn this stuff in university, we mostly learned it by hearing it in the office and repeating it.

As a primer to absorb some bona fide office speak, you could read a bunch of tech-oriented CVs
eg: http://www.acis.org.co/index.php?id=797

and maybe recruitment ads
eg: http://www.elempleo.com/clientes/index.asp

Another option is a brief internship. But I doubt this would work in a Colombian context (being at the bottom of the pecking order, it would likely be a primer on sexual harrassment, current state of play in Colombia).

que nota!

Makes sense. All things considered, I'd take a course somewhere cool if given the option (ie Colombia ;)).

Colombiche says on Feb 24, 2008, 15:46:

LOL Pedro, thanks. The internship route is not too bad, but I don't know if I am willing to make such a downward move, mayb for the adventure :(

Sexual harrassment...... hmmm nothing specific to Colombia, I've dealt with all kinds of colourful situations here in Toronto, ranging from kinky love confession valentine cards from my boss, weekend bahamas getaway invitations from married male coworkers who are going through marital crises and unsolicited backrubs from my 63-year old cubicle neighbor lol. I have had more than a primer.... I'm bulletproof by now LOL.
