question for all u gun enthusiast in Medellin or Cali..

Does anyone know of a shooting range i can go and practice at. One that has a instructor to teach me gun safety before going out on the range. My bro-in-law just took me shooting over weekend in San Diego. He was in the Corp for 20 years, so he was able to teach me basic safety for glock&colt45. But i want to try shooting AR15, HK or other assult rifle when i'm in COL, i figure the cost must be lot cheaper than shooting in the US. So i dont want to pay an arm/leg for any membership or other expensive deal. Just pay for gun rental/bullets/range & 1-2 hr of instructions.

dear cas caslug
the good news...
you can pretty much shoot anywhere out in the country into the side of a hill making sure that there is nothing beyond of course....that's the cheap part
the bad news...
it will cost you an arm and a leg.....legal gun ownership is basically for people who have money....a typical handgun will set you back anywhere from 1,500,000 revolver to 4,500,000 (not including all the costs for the paperwork and documentation) for a nice pistol same revolver and pistol will run you 200- 500 bucks back in the US.....the rounds real hurt ...... run you about 1,800 per round (that's for 9mm) but pretty well all rounds are pretty much the same price...let me say this again each bullet costs almost a buck American....comparing bullets in the US at about .12-.18 cents a bullet.....when I went out practicing in the US I would drop at least a couple hundred rounds at one sitting for a total cost of like 5 -6 bucks (if that) here it will run you about 150 bucks....believe I wish I could go practice like back in the US but truth is I go out in the country and lay down 20 rounds yes 20 shoots.....disgraceful I say..... I say INDUMIL is making a shit load of money.....somebody should look into there business ....cause me thinks someone is putting a lot of money in their pockets

bullets cost a BUCK A ROUND!!! HOLY SH*T!!! How do FARC afford to shoot? Are they only shooting one shot at a time? No wonder they lob the gas canister!

I dont want to BUY a gun, just want to rent one for couple of hours. IN San Diego, CA it cost $37.00USD for 100 rds, and when you buy the rounds the gun use is FREE! So it only cost my bro-in-a-law and I $37USD to shoot two pistols w/ 50 rds each. I thought maybe it would be cheaper in COL, guest not. :-(

And it's cheap! i thought COL would be the same...my bad.. it's just that i remember reading another poster on another board mentioning going to a shooting range out in Cali and firing off some assult rifles and it was cheap.

Gun ownership in Colombia What government agency has jurisdiction over granting legal gun ownership and do you have knowledge of the applicationn procedure? Is this only to own a handgun or for a permit to carry the weapon? Any light you may shed on the process would be welcome.

Thanks.

Does This Help... Medellin off Via Las Palmas is a sports club called Club Anades-they have a range.

Gun Ownership?
You have to go through the army to complete the purchase of a firearm. DAS, to the best of my knowledge, is not involved legislative authority which regulates the possession of firearms by civilians is Industria Militar (INDUMIL). INDUMIL is also the legislative authority that regulates the sale of firearms and firearm supplies to civilians.

Licencing Requirements:

Applicants must be over 18 years of age with full citizenship or have Colombian cedula; A form provided by Industria Militar must be completed; authenticated photocopies of the applicant's identity card and police record must be presented; Proof of the need to possess weapons for the applicant's safety and protection must be provided; and medical certification of mental and physical fitness to use weapons must be presented; persons known to be suffering from chronic alcoholism, dependence on narcotic drugs or psychotropic drugs may not receive a permit and you must complete an approved firearms training course (Certificado Maneso de Armas.)

I have no idea if the above requirements are still in force or accurate. I do not have a permit because I do not carry on my person-just keep in the house/apartment or, occasionally, in the car. I did ask my brother-in-law (retired military and at one time in his career was the military police commandant of the military district-Bogotá.)

His reply was if you are a gringo watch out but he also said the percentage of people who do have a firearm with them is very, very high. BTW, you shoot and or/kill someone with a gun and do not have a license there is a mandatory jail sentence of six months. This applies even if it is self defense. Under Decree No. 3664 of 1984, article 1 provides for an imprisonment period of between one year and four years and confiscation of the weapon in cases of illegal carrying, transport, manufacture or distribution of firearms.

I personally never want to have to say. "El cárcel es magnífico. Mucho mejor que me apartamento." (Nice jail you got. Much better than my apartment.)

Are Colombian jails "bad?" For a good idea I suggest you rent and watch closely the 1978 movie "Midnight Express" or drive by La Modelo prison in Bogotá. After you see La Modelo remember Dante's description of the quote over the entrance to hell in the in "The Divine Comedy," "Abandon hope, all ye who enter here."

Yo no sé What I shot was courtesy of my brother-in-law who is(retired) high-ranking military officer. As best I remember more than double what it is in the USA

hey caslug what's the matter don't believe what I write....you think I would make it up so you dot practice here....come on.....I have gone through the whole process...as for handgliding and paraglidinig yupp now that's cheap to do...although buying a a paraglider here is pretty expensive as all paragliders come from either the US(dollars) or Europe(euros)...if you can bring one I am even sure you can sell it here .....a tandem rider will run you about 20,000 where as back in the US it will run you almost 100 bucks...probably because of all the liability involved....any more question don't be afraid to ask

Bullets are expensive to buy new What you do, is pick up your used cartridges and take them to people who make new bullets, I don't know the price that they charge, but my friends say its a lot cheapear.

There are plenty of shooting clubs, the best ones are with the military, if you make a few friends in Colombia they will take you there etc.
