Question about helping a friend get a spanish visa

I have spent 2 hours looking for this question being answered and I can't find it, so here goes. I am an American who has traveled to Colombia many many times for the last 3 years, and I have friends throughout the country and in the embassy. One of my assistants has a
girlfriend that is 39 years old. She has always been nice to me, known her a year, and recently they came to me for a favor. Her dream is to live in Spain. They asked if I would go to the spanish or german embassy and say I was her girlfriend, show them my bank records and job status in the states so she could get a tourist visa. Then she would go to spain where she supposedly knows people and where there is some guy that will marry her so she can stay there. I normally would never even think twice about this, but she is a really good person, never had any money, and was taken advantage of by a number of people. I have seen more scam artists than I care to remember in Colombia, and the women there while incredible, are a lot more cunning than women here, so I know all the games, but she is just a friend and really has been a good person. How would anyone recommend helping her? I'd like to get her there, but I am a reputable person, who will soon have his Colombian residency, own an apartment, ect, so I am not going to do something that would screw things up, but I would still like to help her. No, she does not have any property, and only about 12 million pesos in the bank. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks

Just say no. There is no up-side and all down-side to that transaction. Is this someone you would lie for and possibly go to jail for? If so why are you sending them off to marry someone else?

Politely suggest that she have the person in Spain she wants to marry provide the sponsorship and then wish them both the best.

I'm not saying she's trying to scam you (in particular) but she is asking a pretty freakin' big favor of you.

You are all right Folks, I already told them I was not going to do it, but
I was wondering if there was any way to help her get
there that is legal and ethical. Also, I wanted to send
your posts to my friend so he leaves me alone! Thanks
for them!!

I know some south american women who obtained a tourist visa to Spain rather easily, and just "happened" to overstay.....they work under the table, so to speak, and from what i have seen firsthand in Madrid, the south american "illegals" in Spain are treated much worse than the Mexican illegals in the US in almost every respect....

another piece of advice, and take it for whatever it is worth, if applied to obtaining a US visa, how hard do you think it would be for someone in ICE to track down a posters IP address via a court order directed to PBH? asking for advise on potentially illegal activity on a public internet forum is not a good idea...even for a reputable person.........

Just my opinion...

Mike from Chicago I am probably PBH's most well know Chicagoan. I have written all kinds of things on this site from time to time, much of which stirs things up. But I have to tell you, I have never written anything as utterly rediculous as what you are asking about.

First of all, my experience as an attorney tells me something here and that is I don't think you are disclosing everything. For one thing, why would someone go through all this trouble and risk their credibility for "a friend." What's in this for you? Look chief, lying to a government entity for fraudulent purposes can get you in trouble in ways that I cannot contemplate at this moment. But it can in some way affect your relations with other embassies and perhaps the American government as well. There are a host of federal offenses that might even cause you to have some difficulties with the US government as well.

One more point, you mentioned how Colombians have a propencity to lie. People lie everywhere, but even if you think that Colombians are less dishonest than Americans, that is not an excuse for you to sacrifice your own integrity, as a person from the US because of the misdeeds of other.

Lastly........I did not know that my fellow Chicagoans could possibly think of such absurd ideas

Face value OK, for the final time, This was not my idea. They came to me with this idea. I had already told them I wouldn't do it.
Thats why I said "I'm not going to do anything to screw things up"
and "Normally I wouldn't think twice" But the reason I am still thinking about it is I would still like to help her get her visa. Sometimes you help someone when there is nothing in it for you (For all of you asking what is in it for me). While that thought probably doesn't cross my mind as often as it should!
As to not disclosing everything, I actually was, but I should have been more clear as to what my question was. Sorry. I feel bad for saying no, and still wanted to help. As to the moral equivalence of lying or sacrificing integrity, I think you are overanalyzing this thing. I was only trying to say that this wasn't a scam unlike a lot of things down there, just a friend trying to find a way to help someone. I'm looking for another way to help her get there and am wondering if anyone has any ideas. As to all this criticism, sorry for not writing my question more clearly..

My friends in Madrid are from Ecuador and Colombia...they had a relatively easy time getting over to Spain.....why is your friend having such a hard time?

But this part doesnt make any sense..... "They asked if I would go to the spanish or german embassy and say I was her girlfriend, show them my bank records and job status in the states so she could get a tourist visa. Then she would go to spain where she supposedly knows people and where there is some guy that will marry her so she can stay there." Have the guy who is suppose to marry her when she arrives get her over to Spain....

Just my opinion...

"How would anyone recommend helping her?"

So, are you asking if you think it's ok to lie to the embassy to "help" her?

No, you would be lying.

Not the question The question is not "Would it be wrong, unethical, illegal, ect"
The question is, how could I help her get there in a legal ethical way? Is there a way? Thats all. Thanks...

FredGarvin says on Jun 13, 2006, 21:14:

You could help her by researching her visa options,

http://www.mae.es/Consulados/Bogota/es/home

I did a quick read, but did not find much! My guess is that a the Spanish embassy in BOG has the required forms/applications for any visa. The site listed above does have contact info.

Sorry, I don't have more to offer...
