Quesadillas

So today my bf was picking on me about what im going to eat when i go there, i tend to be very fincky about waht i like to eat, and i told him no problem that i love cheese quesadillas and he said they dont have them in colombia, that he had never even heard of a quesadilla till he was visiting here, and then when they talked about them on napoleon dynamite, was he just joking with me or do they really not have cheese quesadillas there, he told me the only thing like it is a quesadilla but it has dulce de leche type stuff in it

Life is an adventure, don't be picky, you will miss out on life's experiences. I am not sure they even have that sort of food in Mexico.

Cheese empanandas are great however.

Now, after you enjoy all that Colombian food, you might not like the toilet facilities. Toilet seats in public toilets aren't exactly commonplace. Don't worry be crappy! ;-)

They do have quesadillas in Mexico although there are a lot of regional variations. I thought that Colombian food would be similar to Mexican food from say, Monterrey. Boy, was I wrong!

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

Well They have quesadillas in Mexican restaurants here, like La Taqueria, and you can also buy flour tortillas in the grocery store.

It's not a "Colombian" food, sure, but then again neither are French fries or pizza.

Champions has them as do tons of other places in Medellin Yes it´s Mexican but they have them here. I serve them at my restaurant and was not even close to being the first to do so. Hamburger places, taco places, fast food places and Parque lleras all have them.

As Monterey Jack and cheddar are almost non-existant here, or at best so expensive that a restaurant would have to charge $25 mil for a quesadilla, most use Mozzerella. (about $16 mil for a 5 kilo bloque or 2500g) I use the chemically created 7-11 style cheddar on mine. Sounds gross, but tastes great! I buy from the manufacturer ($2400 for 200g) so I can keep my costs down and sell the thing with chicken or steak, guacamole, sour cream and hot salsa for COP$7990.

By the way, I have seen Cheez wiz in Exito and carrefour but it is really expensive.

Now since Postobon is Pepsi why can we not get Mountain Dew down here?????

considering that mexican food is.. one of the more "foreign" food that is popular(right up there w/ chino). you should be able to find quesadilla. I had 'em in spig's restaurant and at buffalo restaurant both in Medellin. I think i even saw them on the menu at the fast food places in the malls.

But i thought COL had the equilvalent, arepas with cheese or that one i saw, two arepas looking slice w/ cheese in between them.

Turkey....can you believe the price here?? As for taco bell, I was just talking to another gringo living here and we were dying to pig out on the deal of 10 mix and match tacos and burritos for $10 with a ton of fire sauce.

I paid $12 mil for 9 slices of turkey the other day. Rediculous! But I will be having Thanksgiving at my place (Champions, Ave 80 No. 27 A 24 Belen La Palma, Medellin Tel 3434343) and we WILL have the 2 American Football games on. But the price of pavo is soooooo expensive here it just wants to make me quit.....cold turkey (sorry :-)

Just keep a turkey penned up out back until the time is right, or wrong depending upon whether it is you or the bird. ;-)

WHY? Why is turkey so expensive? It's just another bird, only bigger. Can't they be raised like a chicken?

A lesson! Whilst staying with my novia in Bogota and having been treated to a, what I thought was superb meal, We were walking back to the area of The Bull Ring (despicable place) where she lived.

I had that feeling of fullness and a general grumbling in the nether regions. I knew that I had to go soon, like immediately.

By the time my gf had found a W.C. My face looked as if I had been hanging on the gallows for a few hours according to AVH. I could not have cared what the place looked like, I was just in time to stop myself being extremely embarrassed.

You know the saying " the bottom has fallen out of my world"? In this case I felt as if the world had fallen out of my bottom.

I should have known better, I have been in some countries in my life and I know that the facilities do not always come up to Waldorf standard, but, in this case in what was a major capital city it was unbelievable.

The bowl was loose on the floor, which had a broken and slanted board. Sitting at an angle of 30 Deg with one foot on the makeshift door to prevent intrusion, the smell was something to behold, (before I arrived) No paper. No water. No wash bowl?

Lessons to be learned
1. Watch what you eat in strange places
2. Know what you are eating in any place
3. The points of interest on your local map should include the available ‘rest rooms'
4. Keep a supply of soft tissue in your back pocket. (Doing the necessary on 1000 COP is a needless expense, and probably treasonous)
5. Anti squits pills are essential

My mistake in this case was an allergy. Butter beans and/or liver makes my stomach react violently.

It is worthy of note however, that this was the only time in Colombia that I had a problem with the food. It was partly my fault. Not the only time I had a problem with the W.C.s however.

My stated facts, although interesting at times, are generally irrevelant.

i was told.. that there is this restaurant that makes dessert quesadillas, like with tortillas and dulce de leche in the middle, sounded gross to me but someone told me i HAD to try it, anyone else heard of this?

adrimm says on Oct 26, 2005, 17:54:

Ohhhhh, nooonnonono that is different. Those are called obleas, and are NOT flour tortillas. They are these giant flat wafers made of something similar to regular ice cream cone wafer (it is slightly sweet), and arequipe is spread in the middle (like a sandwich).

They are an amazing treat, I **love** them!

Oh, so she's never been to Santander then eh BAQ? There are stands all over the place. I think that the best ones I had (if such a thing can be defined) was in Barichara.

You can mail-order alpina brand arequipe (the filling) online. Here's a place selling it: Online Colombian food shop

But for at home, this is a shortcut for something very similar to arequipe - but good luck finding the round waffle boards:

Get a can of sweetened-condensed-milk, strip off the paper.
Get a pressure cooker
Put the can in the pressure cooker
Cover the can with water
Put the pressure cooker on for an hour
Let the whole thing cool until it is room temperature
Open the can and enjoy - the parts along the outside perimeter of the can will be closest in consisitency to real arequipe.

obleas? it sounds like the German Oblaten, an old-fashioned variant of the wafers fed to you in church with red wine ...

I could imagine eating them with chocolate sauce ... but with cheese?
