¿Que vale mas?

¿Que vale mas? ¿La sinceridad o la manera como uno se expresa?

Cordialmente,

Platón

Pienso que ambos son igualmente importantes. pero uno podía ser más, dependiendo de la circumstancia y del mensaje.

Take Elmo for instance; In stark constrast to what Kat1 just wrote, the manner in which he writes, is his message. That's it.

Plato says on Oct 28, 2006, 15:20:

I’ve posted on other sites for many years. From time to time, questions of free speech came up because some posters expressed themselves harshly but sincerely. (Many of them were English, by the way, and the biggest proponents for civil liberties. Anti-Blair folks to say the least!)

We determined that since the forum was privately owned, no one had a right to free speech; however, no one had a right to put other posters down for their ideas.

Then the argument focused on whether it was more important to be sincere or polite. Many didn’t for care for politeness, but the abrasive manner by which things were said turned many off. At this time, the moderators left and the forum ran amuck. Then someone quoted Voltaire, “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. In the marketplace of ideas, sincerity is more important than anything else because the ultimate purpose of language is to communicate truth, not niceties (although these are important too within its proper context).

Opinions are just that – opinions. However, some do have more weight than others, but the listener decides which ones are worthwhile.

It was not Elmo's name that was thrown in immediately, but his manner of writing.
Everyone has agreed that Elmo could write a best-seller full of stories. It would be just that: because of his manner of writing. I think that was what you asked; whether the 'manner' or way of writing was more important than the sincerity. We have amongst us the classic example of a good beginning of answering that question. So, yeah. You ask, why was Elmo's name thrown in so quickly? Why did you ask the question?

And be forced to surf elsewhere...

We have the opposite problem here If anything this site is UNDER-moderated, not over-moderated.

I think it goes without saying that Peter can do whatever he wants with his website though, and this is a part of that. At this point he's probably pretty motivated to keep his hit count up because he's probably making some decent advertising revenue from it, but nobody's putting a gun to his head to do anything.

I don't have any problem with the abrasiveness of posters on here. I DO have a problem with their ignorance and ethnocentrism, which IMO is as bad as racism. There seems to be two extremes on here that have nothing to do with reality. One extreme is that Colombia is utopia, and the other extreme is that Colombia is so bad that ANYBODY who had the chance would just pack up and leave for greener pastures.

---Violence is the price of freedom.---

goin_south says on Oct 28, 2006, 23:30:

One extreme is that Colombia is utopia Don't you think it's more of this, at the moment? Really, if you read back through so many posts of the last month, there are lots of people asking without fright, about where to go, how to rent a car, a good motel? on and on. Looks like the recent trend is lots of travelers just wanting the information. They don't seem scared or paranoid, and just want the correct information. I think only mostly Colombians are painting the 'utopia' picture of Colombia; everyone else, know they need to investigate, and make prudent decisions. I think.

and, thank you.

Mario says on Oct 28, 2006, 23:32:

Well Rubito... My wife of one year and who I've had in my life for two; a lawyer from north Bogota, is leaving six sisters, her mother and father - nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles - all who she dearly loves - and all her friends she's known her entire life behind. She's also the mother of my child and totally devoted to our baby and our family.

What does that tell you?

Rubito says on Oct 29, 2006, 05:38:

Mario it tells me simply that ONE PERSON decided to leave her country, most probably for love. It's hardly a significant statistical sample ;)

Then you have people like my gf who would NEVER live in the US or anywhere else but Colombia under any circumstance, and have quite good lives in Colombia.

Then you have people like my gf's friend who just married a gringo and is supposed to go up to LA to live but is having second thoughts.

You are generalizing. Colombians like anybody else, are a very mixed bag of characters. That is the problem here at PBH, that posters tend to talk about colombians like we are all put together in an assembly line, paint us all with one broad stroke of the brush.

You will find colombians who bad mouth colombia to the extreme, you have the ones that paint you a rosy picture, but most, fall somewhere in the middle - admitting the shortcomings but also trying to emphasize the positive aspects of our culture and our way of life. When you come from a blacklisted country, you try to go the extra mile to educate people that not everything is the way the media paints it.

I don't think I have ever read a colombian claiming that colombia presents an individual with more economic opportunities than the US or Canada. If anything, that is the very reason why colombians, myself included, are immigrants in distant lands. IT's the bouts of nostalgia that make us remember everything back home like it's straight out of a postcard.

Colombiche, I appreciate your lines of delineation But I did not generalize as you said; I did not say that ALL COLOMBIANS paint the picture of utopia, but I said that it was MOSTLY, or more so, Colombians rather than others that do so.

"paint us all with one broad stroke of the brush."...Colombiche, it's a nice, pretty stroke, or we all wouldn't be here, hanging out together.

Maybe the word utopia was a stretch; 'Dream'?...not.

I greatly appreciate the sentimentality of your last paragraph, very well put, Colombiche.... "bouts of nostalgia...straight out of a postcard."

I think it is just as has been said here before, everyone wants others to think well of their homeland. Just that in the case of Colombia, I think because as has also been accurately said on PBH many times, Colombia being a country of a thousand extreme contrasts, then the challenge to make (many or some) others see all the good about a place becomes more burdensome in ways.

and, thank you.

utopiacowboy says on Oct 29, 2006, 16:42:

You're right, Famsearch. People are always sentimental about their homelands despite its drawbacks. A place can be a total shithole but by God, if it's your shithole, it's the shithole Garden of Eden. A healthy segment of the US population would gladly offer Texas up to the Iranians and North Koreans for nuclear testing but to those of us who live there it's a wonderful place.

goin_south says on Oct 29, 2006, 20:29:

Since you can only 'live on love' up til about the age of 23, I think most would agree that economic opportunities are between 'somewhat' and 'very' important. If you are 17-19, it's only important to your dad/(let me not forget: those work-your-fingers-to-the-bone) moms.
