Punk

Drinking beer, surfing YouTube and losing myself in nostalgia. Punk! The Pistols, The Anti-Nowhere League, the Dead Kennedys...ah, those were the days!

I wonder if anybody here knows, but was/is that kind of stuff at all popular in Colombia? My wife has nephews who like Metallica and Slipknot and all that other po-faced, anodyne guff; but I'm thinking about the more authentic, humorous late 70s/early 80s sound?

Im thinking the entire 1970's shouldnt even have happened. what a goofy decade!
I like the 50's, 60's, 80's, 90's ( skip right over the 70's and 2000's)

Scotty The 70s were strange days, that's for sure. Punk's fine for an hour or two of boozy nostalgia, but not a great deal else. The older I get, the more I like 50s and 60s stuff. And ranchera!

So what? It's funny, I was just watching some videos of The Clash and wondering where in Cali - where I will be staying for a few months - it would be possible to hang out with a beer and some good rock. I even post a message asking if anybody knew about a place like that, but asking for old school punk rock I think it's too much. Gotta be happy with some alternative and indie probably...
Antinowhere League....hmmm...I will be surfing youtube now..

I would have said it should have been the 80's to be wiped out. Don't recall much worth listening to from that decade apart from the late 80's bands that developed the Manchester scene.
The Smiths, Joy Division, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, James, The Charlatans.
Most 80's music was cheesy nonsense.
In the 70's you had plenty bands bringing out credible music - The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, The Clash, EricClapton, The Beatles. Stevie Wonder.(You can't beat a bit of early Stevie for gettin your main pimp head on)..lol

Just listening to Eric Clapton + Cream - White Room...falls into your golden years period Rubito. I've got to agree with you on that.
I've often thought there could be a market in Bogota for a good bar with rock / alternative music. Or if not a bar, DJ putting on nights at bars.
Been in a few bars in Bogota, meant to be rock bars and end up listening The Bee Gees....lol
A lot of good modern rock bands that I think would go down well with younger crowd in Bogota. Queens of the Stone Age, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club etc.

SFO 69-74 Now those were some good times. Hit the Avalon Ballroom, Fillmore West, Winterland, Family Dog on the Beach. You could not beat it! For $3 on Thurs/Sun night, they even gave you a apple and a poster at FW. Wish I had them now. Collector items. Tuesday night jams at the FW for $1. Santana & Mike Bloomfield, and a whole bunch of other excellent Muscians. Lots of Chit to smoke. Owsley & Leary. Oh Yea! I remember them days well. The Bay Area was hot then. The Bee Gees are easy listening music, but diffently not ROCK! More like Pop or Disco. That guy Martin in Cali, now he knows rock.

MacGringo Im a little confused about the groups you named as 70's groups, most of the groups on your list are actually 60's groups. example the Doors formed in the 60's , all their hits were in the 60's, and the group disbanded in 1970.
Same with the Beatles, they formed in the late 50's and had their fame in the 60's, Paul McCartney left the group in 1970 and they disbanded.

Rubito i agree every era has their good music and bad music. i can find good tunes from any era and get into listening to it. However i agree with you that some of the most creative, interesting and good tunes were from about 1966 to around 1973. Groups at that time were really experimenting alot, adding many different instruments, and releasing some really good sounds. This was when all these super groups were at their peak, The Beatles, The Stones, Eric Clapton, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, even Elvis had some good hits in that time frame.

I wasn't saying they were 70's bands Scotty, but only that they were bands releasing good music in the 70's.
The Doors - Morrison Hotel - 1970 and L.A. Woman - 1971, which was thought of by a lot of people as some of their strongest material.
My point is just that skipping over the 1970's would miss out on a lot of good music.

Mac Thats not what you said , you made reference to those groups from the 1970's. They werent groups from the 1970's they were groups from the 1960's that disbanded and died and fizzeled out in the Early 1970's. Theyre heydays were in the 1960's, they were fizzling out in the early 70's.
A couple of songs by the Doors were released in the very early 70's (70 and 71) but they were written and recorded in the 60's. Jim Morrison left the group in December 1970 and died just one year later in 1971 in Paris France, so there was no Doors creations in the 70's, they were clearly a 60's rock group.
Most of the really good rock groups from that era were gone by the early 70's, a few still hung around but most were disbanded, dead or moved on to other things by 72 or 73.

Punk The genre is positively antique now. Think...the original stuff is from an era before Reagan and Thatcher. Another world. The Clash's 'Career Opportunity' lamented that the only jobs working-class school leavers could get were boring ones. Five years later there were no bloody jobs at all!

But keeping it Colombia-related: Is modern US punk popular with the Colombian rockers? Indeed, is there punk today? Are Green Day punk? Electric 6? It's all greek to me these days; I'd rather listen to Dean Martin.
