Visit The City First Work is virtually non-existent unless you have a skilled trade. There is some industry but not much compared to Europe or the USA. I think you're best bet is just to visit the city and see for yourself. It was a real eye-opener for me. Also keep in mind that this is a place where materials are expensive, but labor is dirt cheap. This is the direct opposite of an industrially developed country where materials are relatively cheap and labor is expensive. The rich are rich and the poor are poor. If someone is driving a car they are probably very wealthy, unlike the USA where most teenage kids have a car by the age of 18. My fiancee lives in Barranquilla, so I have learned a few things about that city. She was quite shocked when I told her that I've been working since I was 15, and I saved my money and bought a car at 16. Things are probably very different than what you have experienced if you are from the UK. I'm not trying to discourage you by any means. I love Barranquilla and would like to retire there myself. The best thing for you to do in my opinion is just to visit the city and get a feel for it.

Barranquilla 1 year I'm from Sweden and 35 y-o and have found a possible girlfriend on Match.com from Barraquilla. I'm free from work for 1 year and I plan to stay in Barranquilla with her this year. I have some questions about the city.

1. Is it too hot and polluted to be enjoyable?
2. What are the risks as a stranger?
3. What is the cost for an small apartment per month? Can I have ADSL installed?
4. Is there a nice beach at Puerto Colombia?
5. Are materials more expensive in Barranquilla than in Europe/US, or is it just in relation to workforce that material is expensive?

Have you Checked.... on your visa? You will need something besides a tourist visa.
Very hot and humid especially if you are not used to the climate.

I have vague memories of Barranquilla, I was trying to fly to bogota but the airport was closed and had to stay in Barranquilla overnight, I went to El Prado hotel and found it quite nice, spent a couple of hours in the city and to be honest, i didnt like it much.

Yes, Barranquilla could get quite hot during the summer, but what’s wrong with having your balls soaked and dripping in sweat. I don’t understand people and their discomfort with heat. Listen when you die, you‘re gonna be cold for eternity, life is heat and the sun is life which is what we get plenty off in Barranquilla. Why do you think my people (Kogi) moved up to la Sierra Nevada? To be closer to the sun and to get away from those smelly Spaniards, but that’s a different story. I worship the sun! So what the fuck I’m I doing living in NYC, you may ask. I also worship the all mighty green (dollar). Anyway, let’s say you’re sleeping and someone decided to touch your body to see if you’re ok, would you rather they touch a warm sweaty body or a dead ass COLD corpse. HOT is good COLD is evil.

Yes, Barranquilla could be quite noisy, but WTF is wrong with a little noise, that’s life and that’s something we got plenty of in Barranquilla. How would you like to live in a small town in New Jersey, I go insane there. Once you die is gonna be quiet as hell. NOISE is good QUIET is evil.

The Ultimate experience? yes, yes, yes...I will go to BQ and i think it will be very exciting. I have read your funny replies and info about BQ on other sites and I think I go for it...

I can understand that people get annoyed when foreigners like me are asking questions about everything, especially security. I don't mean harm, it's only that I have a tipical nordic look and i can not melt into the crowd as many of my fellow Swedish friends can...lol..

OK. I hope to post often here when I finally arrive at BQ..,abrazos

I did not bring up safety because in Barranquilla, Cartagena and Santa Marta is not really an issue, sure we got your common two bit city criminal, but that’s a big city thing and it happens in all big cities around the world. As for a bunch of guys dressed in army green with rubber boots dragging your ass to the jungle, I personally have never heard of such a thing, first of all we aint got no jungle. The closest thing to a jungle we have is some of those really messed up neighborhood in south Barranquilla, but you never have to go there. That’s where you’ll find me. We got rich white people in Manhattan that have never set foot in Harlem, If you have no business there why the f—k go there. Dude, once you begin making friends and hanging out with a group of middle to rich class barranquilleros you’ll have a great time, they’ll have you dancing like them in no time. My relatives dragged me to a Estanco (liquor store) on 84th street, north barranquilla , rich modefoques. I saw a group of beautiful wealthy white barranquilleras teaching some young blonde gringos how to dance, and to my amazement, they did well. Just imagine weekends in cartagena, santa marta and barranquilla clubs, eating pescao frito in Puerto Colombia, getting your white ass gang banged by a group of drunken rich barranquilleras, they are hot and love the hell outta white guys. I get no action from them.

thanks I must thank you all, especially elmodefoque, for your replies. I think I can get along well in Barranquilla. I will though spend a lot of time on studying spanish at University or/and at my PC, so after some months I hope I can manage in the everyday life.

We have had splendid wheater here in Sweden +25 celcius for more than 10 days now and I really like this. The long dark and cold year-half makes life quite melancolic here, for me it does, so i'm very happy to leave, hoping to make Barranquilla my second home while I see Sweden in many ways like a big "workshop".
