I was there last August. It was snowing.
When I read the title of your post, I thought exactly about the same place.

Kat really?, I think you have enough snow. it would be the last place I would want to go in Colombia. Muy frio!

actually Liza here in the UK doesn't snow that much... just on higher grounds or if you live in Scotland, we do get a lot of rain thought arggggggggggggg

manINred says on Mar 28, 2008, 15:30:

I've just spent 6 months in the most depressingly cold snow covered (relevant) city on earth, and yes, it was 6 months, we're just barely showing signs of non-hell now. I barely survived, but I imagine that this "cold" part of Colombia has nothing on it. Like a walk in the park.

paulr says on Mar 28, 2008, 15:30:

It´s just what i´m looking for, it doesn´t look too far from Medellin but i can imagine the bus journey would be interesting, did you stay in manizales and travel to parque los nevaods from there? The photo is Manizales at night

When were the photos taken? My girlfriend has never seen snow, would be nice for her but she says she is freezing at night here in Medellin, i think she will finding new meaning to the word!

Your girlfriend claims it is 'freezing' in medellin? lol! I've never known anyone from Medellin who still lives there who can cope with the cold. Freezing... classic.

Lisa Zee says on Mar 28, 2008, 15:54:

Yes, and it is 65, LOL.

robi666 says on Mar 28, 2008, 15:58:

You reach 4800 meters by car. Then, you can take a walk to 5100.
I don't know of any other place where you can get that high by car.

yes there are some places about a 10 minute walk from the bus station where i stayed for bout 15 or 18 mil a nite, i will get the names for you paul. its a nice city to stay in, very hilly, more than bogota....there are also some aguas termales you can visit after spending some time seeing the glacier and walking up to around 5200 i think i remember. my camera messed up after for a while, had to stay in cali for 4 days while he fixed it, things worked out well.

In Parque de Los Nevados I had a pretty wild adventure.

We got up there with my F150, then decided to go back to Manizales taking and off road path that would take us to Laguna del Otum on the way.
We got a guide with us, who swore the road was ok for such a big truck.
Moving from the 4800 m hut, after around one hour, we got to a big plan, with a quite big mountain hostel, at 4200 m I think. An amazing place, indeed. Has anyone ever been there?

After that, the path got really, but really ugly. I could not drive more than the 2nd low gear, without getting bumped on the bottom of the truck.
I had almost a full tank when we moved, but, because of the height, the gas was being consumed at a wild rate.

After a couple of hours, we got to another hut, where you are supposed to take the path to Laguna del Otum.
A guide, who lives there, told us that not even a mule could take the road, so no way that we could do it.
So we started to go down to Manizales.

In the paramos, it was almost impossible to see things around, because of the fog. But we could see the army up there, with tanks and everything. It was the border between Caldas, Risaralda and Tolima, a "zona caliente" of FARC activity.

The path was as bad as it could be and we had a major gas problem.
So, going down, we started to ask to all the fincas on the way if they had any gas to sell.
We asked to more or less six and, finally, we found a man who gave us an half gallon, and we could drive a bit further.
Then, another gallon, from a truck which broke down on the way, the first vehicle we met after 5 or 6 hours.
Then, we had to cross a river that took the shit out of me.

Finally, another gallon from another finca and we saw Manizales' lights down there in the dark.

Becuase of it's diversity of ecosystems (micro climates,.etc). Colombia is among the most diverse places on the planet:

from: http://www.af-info.or.jp/eng/honor/essays/1997_2.html

"Subsequent analysis of other mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, plants and selected groups of insects led to the conclusion that 17 countries qualified for megadiversity status, with Brazil, Indonesia and Colombia topping the list, followed by Australia, Peru, Mexico, Madagascar, China and nine others".

"The findings in this book indicated that these 17 countries by themselves accounted for more than two-thirds of all life forms and for the vast majority of tropical rainforests, coral reefs and other priority systems"

robi666 says on Mar 30, 2008, 17:25:

Yes, exactly, adrimm, and do you know where this diversity is most concentrated?
It is where you can be from the beach to almost 6000 metres on the sea level in within 50 Km.
