Pride/ cipote jopo orgullo tan sabroso!

My cousin who lives and works in Bogotá is always sending me costeño related videos, she understands how it feels to live away from your Currmaba. She travels to Barranquilla twice a month but unfortunately I could only travel twice a year
Listening to this song, gives me an incredible rush of pride and humility and it makes me feel eternally grateful to have been born in this incredible place, Barranquilla!
My next life, PLEASE let me be a barranquillero again!
Thank you!

The great thing about cumbias vallenatos is how it brings all barranquilleros together, from the mondao (poor) to the middleclass
Barranqulleros from the south enjoy their music as much as the ones from the north (video) who can’t sing for chit.

Elmo - I just got back from la currumba. Couldn't hook up with Jhon. Bastard had his phone off or something.

I'll catch up with you and the fam in NYC in a couple of weeks. We can plan the next installment of United Nations of Corronchos (UNC) in la currumba in Feb-08.

Nothing like dancing to Corroncho Joe's "En Barranquilla Me Quedo" with a beautiful lady on a Saturday night (well, early Sunday morning), drunk on Old Parr, with your group of friends.

Miguel decia que esto es puro ANARCHY and MAYHEM , but not one fokin fight, everybody was just having a great time tirandose maizena y mamando guaro, ron, cerveza etc.
Creo que fue la noche donde terminamos con 3 coyas en el hotel, una mas maluca que el culo mio

talking about mondaqueros.......here is a joke my girlfriend sent me......pretty funny:

MONDAQUERA... OK ???

I find it highly amusing that a lot of people I know in Barranquilla refuse to accept that anything that is not cumbia/Vallentato is music. Rock, pop music, salsa; as far as they are concerned they don´t even exist...........is that pride or ignorance, who knows!
Personally I couldn`t listen to Vallenato constantly but hey give me a plastic chair and un litro of old parr and i`ll be there.

El Polo says on Sep 7, 2007, 09:31:

Good question, I know plenty of people who share the same view on Vallenato. Most say that they are not attracted to any other musical genre. Personally I like some of the oldies like Diomedes Diaz, Ivan Villazon but I prefer the newer brand of Vallenato SIlvestre Dangond, Peter, Luifer etc...

curramberochris says on Sep 7, 2007, 09:52:

You can´t walk anywhere right now without hearing "el papa de los amores"! its driving me crazy! It is strange how people are fixated by Vallenato...is this something you learn from your parents or in school? I have never seen a group of people who are so passionate about a genre of music and will not even consider another style of music. Each to his own I suppose.

toneloc24 says on Sep 7, 2007, 10:42:

Chris-

We didn't even go to Seven, because the word was that it's pure electronica, marica music. LOL!!!

By the way, you're not in Kansas anymore. What do you expect? Brooks and Dunn on the radio? Guess you don't hear that in South or Midwest. How about 50 Cent or Kanye West in the North? Pussycat Dolls, Gewn Stefani in the West? Here in the USA, top 40 radio plays the same crap over and over and over too. What's the difference?

In BAQ, vallenato is king!!! You SHOULDN'T hear anything else. It's not a tourist city, like say Cartagena. It's what locals listen to. If you want to hear other types of music, perhaps you should load your iPod with whatever you prefer and walk around with headphones.

I'm assuming that you don't understand the words to the song, because it'll explain why it's the hottest vallenato in Colombia right now.

curramberochris says on Sep 7, 2007, 10:55:

I was just commenting on the overplaying of songs that happens everywhere really. A song I like is often ruined by having to hear it on every bus I take. I like Peter Manjarres songs, he lives in the flat above my girlfriend, but not 50 times a day!

Maybe you misunderstood my point, I live here, I like the music but the people have a strange obsession I have never encountered before. I apologise if this irritated you and I have never been to Kansas nor do i own an Ipod!

Old School Vallenato is the best!!

Chris-

It's cool.

Just kinda reminded of the same sentiment of how some Americans (not saying you are) get all po'ed because English isn't spoken when traveling abroad to a primarlily non-English speaking country. That's how your post struck me.

Trust me. I don't even listen to the radio here in the USA, unless it's for weather, traffic, or sports scores. Primarily for reasons that you stated. Hence, the iPod. You might want to invest in one. One of the best consumer products in years.

Hey chris, barranquilleros are also crazy for salsa and merengue and now reaggaton.
the only chit we hardly or never listen to is rock en esapñiol, Steely Dan or gringo music, or the weir techno or devil music (heavy metal) kids in the interior love that crap.
Every kid in the coast learns cumbia from their parents and schools. All schools teach kids cumbia and they compete amongs each other.
We are the keepers of colombian heritage and will continue until the end of time
