Price of Commodities and Place to stay -- cheap

Hi Everyone,

I was planning to go to Colombia next month and stay there for 4 months. May someone help to find a comfortable and cheap place in Bogota?

Also, may I also ask, how much are the commodities. Restaurant meals.

I hope someone could help me. Thank you.

define your terms better What is cheap and comfortable to you? People's ideas vary widely on this. Hostel? Decent hotel? Nice neighborhood? Marginal neighborhood.

All these variables come into play in price.

While in Bogotá where are you going to be the most??, downtown, north, west, how much is your budget per month for housing? more or less,

There are good priced apartments in different places in Bogotá as well as small division on big houses, where the owners fixed them for rent, with independent entrance and public services. For a hostal the one mentioned in this forum lots of times is the

Price of Stuff Cost of non-durable goods or goods made in Colombia is very inexpensive, everything else requires more dollars.

These are costs in pesos living in a town of 30,000 +. Exchange rate Feb 2005 is 2,300 pesos per dollar, 3,000 for Euro.

Personally,, I would NOT live (visiting is different) in a major city or anywhere, US included, with more than 100,000,,, NO matter how nice they are.

Most Colombians with MONEY have a place in the city AND a home in one of the bedroom cities where they keep their horses and go to relax and have FUN (or,, in some cases, get away from or keep their wife). If there is one thing a Colombian male understands,, it is relaxing and having a good time. Almost the entire month of December and January is a continuous concerts, festivals, parades, parties, fairs etc.

Some of the costs I remember.

Rent, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, living dining room, kitchen, patio, level 2 area,, which is pretty nice,,, 260,000 pesos. 350,000 pay the rent on a NEW 3-2 apartment with built-ins, cabinet top stove, wood beamed ceilings, w/d connections with-in two blocks of town central.

Maid: Part time, 5 days a week, 90,000 month, full time 130,000. Washes, cooks, dusts, mops, serves food.

Gardener: One day a week. $15,000 pesos per day.

Lawn mowing, $5,000 pesos.

Custom tree cutting and forming, $5,000 pesos per visit. My front tree is totally flat on the top and round. My neighbor has a tree that is vertically “round” (3 meters?) and about a third of a meter “thick”. Hard to explain but it is “different”.

Cable TV $8,000, Electricity $30,000, Water $25,000, gas $20,000 and I use lots of electricity and water,, plus I have electrically heated hot water for showers and a sauna.

50 mile trip between towns w/o many toll booths $3,500 on a “public” bus. Near by town, $1,100.

100 mile trip going through 3 or 4 tolls booths, $13,500 in a scheduled, almost new Mercedes 15 passenger diesel and they come by the house to pick me up.

Grocery shopping,, free delivery. Materials such as concrete, sand, wood, bricks etc. FREE delivery but no more than $2,000 pesos if you get a small amount.

Medium sized pineapple, two papayas, two melons, 2 pounds watermelon, 1 pound of grapes, 4 pounds of bananas $7,000 pesos, maybe a little less. Mangos are "free" (almost) if in season. Really fine Avacados,, don't know,, I have a tree,, sold 70 pounds for 35,000 pesos to a street vendor.

Breakfast $3,000 pesos and up,, coffee, two eggs, slice of ham (thin), arepa and a bowl of fruit.

Lunch: 4,500 pesos and up,, large portions, rice, meat, beans, fried platano(s), juice bread.

Coffee, cheese roll, arepa at a coffee shop,, about 600 pesos.

Buñuelos: $200, a new place is selling MUCH bigger ones for 300. They are not $100 bigger but they are selling like hot cake (arepas?). Marketing at its finest.

Bon Ice: 300 pesos (frozen cool-aid in plastic bag) strawberry is my favorite.

Chupi Cumi: 100 pesos. Not as good as the Bon Ice (frozen yogurt) but still good. I usually buy these 10 at a time and give them to the kids hanging around.

BBQ Chusos are wonderful (pork slices on a stick) with an arepa and small soda,, $2,500 from a known street vendor. Large arepa filled with cheese $700. Was 600 but,, inflation ?

Room in Hostel, Cali 70,000 pesos, hot water, double bed, bath, TV, refrigerator, owned by a US/Colombia with dual citizenship,, which is why I like staying there. Plus,, be sure and ask,, if there is hot water,, hot water is the exception rather than the rule in many accommodations.

Thirty medium to large sized eggs,,, $5,000 to $6,000 pesos.

REAL Nike tennis shoes,, $200,000 and up,, or,, about the cost of one months rent.

Eating at home does not cost much if you stay away from lobster. Typical breakfast (Empanada/taco meat?). Maybe 1,000 pesos?
