Presidenta de Chile promoverá a Ingrid Betancourt para Nobel de Paz

It looks like she's well support generally in polls, so the negative backlash from her mother's behavior hasn't been much evident, but now may have to deflect the cynicism sure to be generated by this effort.

The Nobel Peace Prize? For what? Get serious! She had no business going into FARC territory in the first place. Nobody deserves to get kidnapped but what was she thinking? She had met Reyes et al at a CANDIDATES MEETING EARLIER so it was OK.

She wanted to disarm the Para's and dialogue with the FARC...what does she think now?

It does seem absurd that anyone would suggest that being a symbol of something would qualify someone for the Nobel Peace Prize. Of course, the Venezuelans want to nominate Chavez (sadly this is not a joke) so this may be a sign of the times. I have no doubt Ingrid would understand the silliness of this. But, she may end up receiving the ridicule for someone else's folly. She has such helpful friends.

She is not asking for it, nor giving it to herself.

I understand that perfectly, Lisa and that is a big part of my point. This could easily reflect unfairly against her. She's already been put in danger of that with the reaction to her mother's trashing of Uribe. Maybe she'll say a polite but firm "how sweet, but no thank you" and it will go away.

sanandressi, are you implying that disarming the paras was a bad idea?

Exactly, Ingid Betancourt, as much as I like her now I don't think she deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for being held in the jungle against her will. NOW, if she goes on to campaign to get all the others still kidnapped out of the jungle alive, then I'm all for it.

Why not? Those clowns gave one to Mohammed Abdel Rahman Abdel Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini‎, popularly known as Yasser Arafat and to Al Gordo!

Mononoke28 says on Jul 7, 2008, 09:09:

I'm not too sure about Yasser Arafat's prize but as for Al Gordo (good one btw), it was based on something to create awareness and do something for the planet. It was intentional. Ingrid was kidnapped and held for years against her will, she didn't say "I'm going to go out there and get kidnapped for uhmm... 6-7 years max and show the world what I'm made of."

Any Nobel Prize should be based on your work not on your accidental experiences.

This is silly. I have nothing against Ingrid, but I don't see that anything she's done as of yet merits a Nobel Peace Prize. If she was to use her position to facilitate the liberation of the remaining hostages or otherwise advance the peace process, it might be more reasonable to nominate her. This just seems like Bachelet wanting to milk some publicity.

I do agree that it is pretty pathetic that Arafat and Gore were given the prize.

Gore has dedicated his life to grabbing glory. The save the planet business is more of the same. There was something in the news last year about the outrageous amount of electricity and water used by his massive mansion. On top of that, I'm sure that private jet is not the most eco-friendly mode of transportation.

If she indeed does get put up for it then that is one more indication of how weak and diluted the Nobel Peace prize has become. I wish her the best of luck but she still hasnt really done anything except survive which Im pleased to witness. Give her time, maybe she will........

Considering how the Nobel Peace Prize has become such a joke, nothing more than mechanism to advance socialism, it makes perfect sense that she should get it. She can join numerous others who have done nothing to advance peace, like Arafat, Gore, Albaradei and in perhaps their biggest joke of all Kofi Annan, he of the Iraq corruption scandal that made him, his son and several associates very wealthy at the expense of the people. And being the single person most responsible for making the massacre of 800.000 Rwandans possible.
