PBH / colombia (travelguide, pictures) / post |
During my first visit I tried to learn as much about Colombia in general and Medellin in particular as possible. One thing I didn't find out about was the general use of the postal service.
While sending from the US to Colombia is of some interest I am more interested in mail traveling internal to Colombia and other S. American countries.
Thoughts and experiences from the board is as always so much appreciated.

Mononoke28 says on Mar 6, 2008, 10:41: In Colombia you only send "safe" stuff through the regular postal service, like letters and cards, stuff like that. All other stuff, even documents are mailed mainly through places like Servientrega and Coordinadora where you pay a little extra but the delivery and safety of the package is safe and not lost or stolen. Bill Turley says on Mar 7, 2008, 06:52: As a transplanted Gringo the difference between the cultures in the area of postal service is like nght and day. Virtually every residence in the US has postal service, my TOWN does not have any postal service. The nearest place to "mail" something is 30 minutes away. I can only recieve mail through a step-daughter in Bogota. Mr. Bill Somondoco 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Robert Jorge says on Mar 8, 2008, 23:58: Even in a city of 350,000 people, in Colombia, postal service is not "normal". When I sent a letter to an address in Villavicencio, a person was dispatched to the address via moped, and a notice was given that there was a letter being held downtown for the recipient. Generally, sending something via US postal service will get the parcel there - but once the item arrives at the locale, things work a little differently. Sending stuff from Colombia to the US or other countries .... use Servientrega, Rapidisimo, etc. I have never met a person who actually went to a Colombian post office to send something. --"I believe in making the world safe for our children.
