Postal Service in Colombia

During my first visit I tried to learn as much about Colombia in general and Medellin in particular as possible. One thing I didn't find out about was the general use of the postal service.

While sending from the US to Colombia is of some interest I am more interested in mail traveling internal to Colombia and other S. American countries.

Thoughts and experiences from the board is as always so much appreciated.

In Colombia you only send "safe" stuff through the regular postal service, like letters and cards, stuff like that. All other stuff, even documents are mailed mainly through places like Servientrega and Coordinadora where you pay a little extra but the delivery and safety of the package is safe and not lost or stolen.

Adpostal is the national carrier, AFAIK. It's in bankruptcy administration, but it still trades and delivers.

For mail within Colombia, I would just use Servientrega or something similar, which will cost you about 5000 pesos for a registered letter with quick delivery.

Mailing non-urgent, non-valuable stuff from Colombia to some other country, I would use Adpostal registered air-mail (about 10k pesos anywhere in the world, something like 7k if the destination is in the Americas). Delivery delay to Europe was 2 or 3 weeks. I have had about 8 letters delivered so far at a 100% success rate.

que nota!

As a transplanted Gringo the difference between the cultures in the area of postal service is like nght and day. Virtually every residence in the US has postal service, my TOWN does not have any postal service. The nearest place to "mail" something is 30 minutes away. I can only recieve mail through a step-daughter in Bogota.

Bill Turley...that sounds like the only way to cut down on all the wasteful junk mail. :)

bickerss...dang it...they probably took the stamp and sold it on eBay...big market there for Colombian stamps :)

Guess eBay is not going to take hold there anytime soon.

here's a surprise....I went to deprisa today to send some documents to Florida....it was 100 grams and charge 21,000 for 2 weeks service.....so any way they gave me a receipt from Colombia national post....I ask why it wasn't going deprisa...the girl said from B/manga to Bogotá it goes by deprsia there it is passed over to the national postal then onward to the US postal system......I don't know if I should be worried now

Even in a city of 350,000 people, in Colombia, postal service is not "normal". When I sent a letter to an address in Villavicencio, a person was dispatched to the address via moped, and a notice was given that there was a letter being held downtown for the recipient. Generally, sending something via US postal service will get the parcel there - but once the item arrives at the locale, things work a little differently. Sending stuff from Colombia to the US or other countries .... use Servientrega, Rapidisimo, etc. I have never met a person who actually went to a Colombian post office to send something.

Bill T: the US has had rural postal service since the the 19th century. Letters could be sent reliably and securely since 1905 or so from any farm to any other location. The Colombian postal system presently, is where the US was in the 1850's.
