Possible Paramilitary War Worries Colombia

My two week trip to Medellin was rescheduled for a months stay but I may now have to reconsider my travel plans after the festival this coming week. I may have to cut my trip short for my safety.

Possible Paramilitary War Worries Colombia

Bogota, Jul 29 The death of an important former chief of the United Self-Defenses of Colombia (AUC), in hands of hired assassins, revived in this capital concerns in the development of a war among emerging paramilitary bands.

Antonio Lopez, known as Job, was shot dead Monday at a Medellin luxurious restaurant.

Lopez was an active AUC spokesman to boost the demobilization process of those forces and was considered a political leader of the Colombian Cacique Nutibara Bloc, led by Diego Fernando Murillo, known as Don Berna, one of the most infamous paramilitary chiefs.

According to El Tiempo newspaper, Job had a strong power in Medellin among paramilitaries who have not been demobilized.

The daily stated that Job's death can be part of the war among new paramilitary and drug trafficking groups that control games of chances, extortions and drug routes.

It also reported yesterday that the government will deploy elite forces throughout the country to fight dozens of paramilitary groups proliferated after the demobilization of the AUC.

Naw c´mon now. That´s a little rash. Yes, there are general concerns about struggles to fill power vacuums in Antioquia and there are occasionally unintentional casualties, but unless you´re a "demobilized" paramilitary, an aspiring narco-kingpin or hanging out by the Antioquian borders with Chocó, Córdoba or Caldas, you should be fine. I certainly wouldn´t expect problems at the Feria del los Flores or anywhere else where foreigners usually are at.

Nah. I bet they are pretty good shots all with pleaseant, cordial Antioquian personalities and therefore would kill the paraco sitting next to you without spraying bullets.

Wouldn't even know it until you see the paraco gasping for air with blood stains running down the hankerchief.

Still I think I'll stick to Oveido food court for all my meals! jajajajaja

I love that sweet pretty house music, house music....

The restaurant is named Angus Brangus. Here is the post discussion regarding the assassination at the restaurant.
http://poorbuthappy.com/colombia/post/restaurant-angus-brangus-in-mede...

My biggest worries and concerns are visiting the same establishments as those visited by would-be targets because I would think they frequent the same places a tourist might find worth visiting be it a mall, Parque Lleras, or any business in El Poblado and Las Palmas two exclusive neighborhoods in Medellin. And to add to romy's comment a stray bullet doesn't hit its target, it kills innocent bystanders.

If the government is deploying special elite teams around Colombia to deal with this issue it tells me that something is happening in Medellin.

The chances are so so slim for you to be in a place where someone at that same moment is getting whacked. You´d be putting yourself in much more danger by not looking left and right properly when crossing the road, maybe a bad example.

So this is all speculation? Not even a “reliable Swiss source" to back up the story?

Basically it could be anybody.

What Uribe is fighting the paracos??? But, but, my left wing buddies told me he was in bed with them??? How can that be???

Okay it looks like Uribe sent out the order today to metropolitan police general Dagoberto Garcia Cáceres to take out all the garbage in Medellin because as he states "it's bad for business investments." I now feel safer knowing Uribe is not just aware of the problem but is addressing the situation before it gets out of hand. Knowing this I will feel somewhat more comfortable house hunting on my trip. I'm off the streets as soon as the street lights come on.

Joe Kennedy worked with the mafia to help get his son elected as president of the US and afterwards Jack thanked them by turning his back on the mafia by allowing his kid brother Bobby to prosecute them for organized crime amongst other charges and we all know how that turned out in the end.

It happens everywhere, My wife and I ate dinner in this restaurant (our favorite, and it was the oldest Italian restaurant in the U.S.) a few days before:

"On October 31, 1989 it is alleged that Merlino attempted to murder the son of Nicky Scarfo, Nicky, Jr., in a South Philadelphia Italian restaurant, Dante and Luigi's, wounding him several times in the chest, neck, and arm. Although police never charged anyone with the attempted murder, police and FBI believe Merlino was behind the shooting to avenge an earlier plot by Scarfo Sr. on Merlino's father. Another motive for the attempted hit was to send a clear message that neither Scarfo nor his son were any longer in charge of South Philadelphia. Fearing another Mafia war, Scarfo Sr. moved his son out of town and inducted him into the Lucchese crime family of New York for protection."
