Possible A/H1N1 flu cases in Colombia rise to 136

BOGOTA, May 4 (Xinhua) -- The number of possible cases of influenza A/H1N1 in Colombia rose from 108 to 136, Colombian government said on Monday.

"The virus is in Colombia and many Colombians have the virus. It is an epidemic we have to manage and accept so we can deal with it," Colombian Social Protection Minister Diego Palacio said.

The Colombian government reported on Sunday that a 42-year-old patient had tested positive for influenza A/H1N1, the first confirmed human infection case in the country.

Palacio predicted that the confirmed case "is the first of a series of cases" to be detected in the country.

After this announcement, Ecuador suspended flights between the two countries, and tightened up sanitary controls in border zones to avoid the possible spread of the virus.

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has urged Colombians to follow the sanitary measures and pay attention to any flu symptoms, and not to send children to school if they are sick.

Colombia is analyzing the possibility of producing a medicine for the human A/H1N1 flu in the country.

There is another thread going on this topic and a couple of commenter’s (Catfish for one) thinks that this is a bunch of much a do about nothing. At first I thought these guys (like Catfish) were foolish or stupid, but not anymore. The more this thing gets reported the more like a bunch of crap it sounds. I agree with those who think that this is just a seasonal flu thing or a little sniffle to get out of school or work for a day or three. This "possible" singular case will be 12 cases by tomorrow morning.

As someone else in here likes to say..."follow the money."

...and so it goes

I totally agree. Dengue is ongoing and a MUCH bigger health concern here in Colombia. This is a tempest in a teapot.

Listen all....The news is really really really dull right now...No real major disasters or bombings and stuff..once this happens again the Miss Piggy Fever will subside.

I don't want to spread rumors but I was on Sesame Street today and the rumor has it that Miss Piggy has the Bird Flu and Big Bird has the Swine Flu...not saying anything is going on but I find that shit very suspicious.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

Well.....now that my facinating thread about pee pees has been closed, God only knows why, I will take a moment to further enlighten you on the flu.

Yes, this is a flu, no big deal. The administration here has said as much. From the beginning, they said folks should take some precautions, like washing your hands frequently, avoid public places if you are sick and postpone non-essential travel to Mexico. Hardly anything to generate panic or hysteria.

But why even bother with those precautions. It's just the flu, right. The ordinary seasonal flu is typically made up of a virus, which is a close relation to the previous year's flu. A new vaccine is created each year and distributed in the form of the flu shot. Some people get the shot, a lot don't bother. The seasonal flu kills about 36,000 people in the U.S. and causes around 200,000 hospitalizations. It can damage the lungs and lead to pneumonia, along with imparing organ funtions across the body.

So......shit happens...........but why the concern now.

Firstly, this strain of the flu is new. The virus contains some of the characteristics of the 1918 flu that killed 50 to 100 million people worldwide.( The death figures are all over the chart on this )

Secondly, a true pig virus means people would have little immunity built up from previous exposure to flus of the past.

Thirdly, another big concern initally was, that they couldn't figure out why the people that died from it in Mexico, didn't fall into the typical group that die from the flu, that is, people with underlying heart and kidney disease, the old and the very young. Deaths in Mexico were in otherwise healthy people in their teens and early 20's.

But, more importantily, the initial death rate amounted to 30% in Mexican patients compared to 0.1% for normal seasonal flu.

Of course, they are working on a vaccine, which will be ready before flu season hits in the U.S. However they have to be still concerned as the flu virus can change rapidily. Therefore, the vaccine they create from the information they have now, will only be effective if the virus doesn't change to much.

Having said all that. Flu is relatively easy to avoid. The most effective way to avoid it is to wash your hands very frequently. Particiles from an infected person can be picked up from a door handle, a menu in a restaurant......etc etc...........so wash yer fookin hands and quit saying that the authorities are over reacting. They really aren't. It's only the flu, but left unchecked, the simple flu can be dangerous. The big concern is, what will happen over the summer. Will the virus change so much to render any new vaccine useless. If that happens to be the case, don't bother washing your hands, it'll be a big problem.

Aaaahhhhh tzzzuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

.

It's useless to argue with ignorance...

Wash your hands,, give me a break,, what good would that do,, unless you suffer from obsessive compulsive behavior.

If having dirty hands had something to do with the flu,, then every nose pick'n bugger eater who rubs their eyes would be dead,, same for ass scratchers, ass kissers,, and of course,, worst of all

PIG KISSERS,, sure death
