Hi friends.
Anyone have any knowledge about the possibility of renting a moped, scooter or motobike in Colombia for a traveler? Do I require anything other than a driver's license? The cost? Insurance, safety issues? Thanks.

Gringo Spy says on Sep 13, 2008, 16:16: Don't think the liability insurance is going to be cheap! With only 10k at most you'll be able to buy three motos/scooters and then hope like hell you can advertise it for next to nothing just to get you off the ground. And then you'll still have to deal with the issue of a store front, storage, maintenance etc. IMHO $10k will have you way under capitalized. Better to have a hot dog cart. Best of luck!

Gringo Spy says on Sep 13, 2008, 16:23: After you pay the upfront insurance and the other start up cost I sincerely doubt you will have sufficient funds for "5 motos/scooters, even if you buy Chinese or Korean junk. Again best of luck!

lanegrapaisa says on Sep 13, 2008, 16:35: I'm pretty sure this is a stupid question but what is the difference between a moped and a scooter? oh that cement is just, it's there for the weight, dear 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Gringo Spy says on Sep 13, 2008, 16:44: Well my little pretty a moped has a small motor and pedals (No nboy it's not spelled petals) thus the name "MoPed" and a scooter has no pedals. And before you ask the difference between a motorcycle and a scooter is a motorcycle has foot pegs and a scooter does not.

omargue says on Sep 13, 2008, 18:35: you wouldnt get the motorcycle back is the biggest concern, but you have to rent it to foreingers only, and have them leave somekind of important document like a passport or something as a security cost.....

Gringo Spy says on Sep 13, 2008, 18:40: Narrowing your customers to foreigners with passports would severely limit any possibility of making it a successful business. The customer base would be too small even if tourism is growing 25% plus per year. Maybe a slim opportunity for success in a beach/coastal area like Cartagena but certainly not Medellin or Bogota.

omargue says on Sep 13, 2008, 18:59: yea tru gringo spy....but when i lived there i would def had rented my bike to foreigners but with obviously them leaving htere passport of something, not like a business but more like a way to make money.....money is real tight there and anyway to make an additional 50mil or more is worth taking the bus anyday....
