Portraying of Colombian men & women on PBH

It is funny, how on PBH, Colombian men are always potrayed as drunken womenizers, lack of resposibility, child out-of-wedlock, praised for their drunkeness, etc.....
On the other hand the Colombian women, women with dubious agendas, prepagos, liars, opportunists using looks as a mean to offset social inequities, bimbos, also irresponsible for having children out-of-wedlock, etc...

There are a few exceptions, mostly relating to over-acheiving Bogota women and men.

I have also seen many people calling americans pasty or some other rude name but that doesnt mean that the whole board thinks that way does it?
calm down, yes there are some nuts on this board that will attack just about any person, race, culture or political affiliation but that doesnt mean everyone on the board is racist.
In fact i think its just the opposite i think most people on this board are very pro Colombians thats why we come here to be a part of Colombia.

Whatever, if your only reason for liking Colombia is what's between a colombiana's thighs, so be it. That's your trip. It did piss me off while I was in Colombia because a ton of people have the impression that since you are a gringo you must be in Colombia to either get laid or to purchase a wife. Now I just show their comments to my Colombian friends and we have a good laugh about how pathetic they all are...

I have been in plenty of relationships where everything is pretty much mutual, I have dated women who make more than I do and insist on paying for most everything, and I have been known to pay for most everything in other relationships. However, if you think that going out to dinner with someone is a payment for sex, or living in communion with someone is a payment for sex, then I'd say your a bit warped. Are you expecting to get laid when you buy beers for your buddies? Is it a big let down when they don't put out on sundays after the game? Or is that different? You ever buy lunch for your mom?

But hey, it is your trip. If you pay for it, whatever. Like I said, it just gets old having to shake the reputation that certain gringos have given us all in places like Colombia.

Since I am not a Colombian woman, maybe I don't take offense as easily. Many things are said in jest. And too many people walk around with sticks up their asses(and, no, apparently you do not know who you are).

Comments about Bush being a mass murderer are not made in jest. And those comments reflect on me personally and the people of the US in general. So I can be offended.

0 funny, 0 helpful.

Lcacique says on Mar 5, 2008, 08:21:

There is a big difference between making a sweeping generalization about an entire group of people and making an accusation about a single person. For example, isn't there a difference between saying "Americans are a-holes" and saying "the President of the US is an a-hole"?

Quite frankly I find nothing funny about prostitution. And while things may be said in a joking manner, they often say quite a bit about the person (at times, more so than other forms of commentary). If someone can find humor in the fact that a woman is in such a state of need that she is forced to sell her body to whomever passes by, well, you're sick. It's really simple. Rationalize it however you like...(edit: I shouldn't have used "you" here: "they are sick" and they can rationalize it however they like...)

tomtom33: I am genuinely curious, what offends you about people calling Bush a mass murderer and how does it reflect on you?

Neither Bush nor the US are mass murderers by any definition that I accept.

I don't mind sweeping generalizations about Gringos when they are made in the proper context. I think that they are damn funny. Desi's Hawaiian-shirted droolers at a Cali mall is great.

Lcacique says on Mar 5, 2008, 11:38:

tomtom33: thanks for the honest response.

I would make a distinction between being critical of certain events that are clearly controversial and simply "pissing on everything."

I think there are many people who feel that despite the fact that we are at war, the killing of another human being is defined as murder. Isn't that why governments create words like "collateral damage" or "pacification" so as to allow the public to disassociate themselves from what is taking place? In addition, the fact that many see this war as unjust, makes it easier for some to make the leap to calling it "mass murder." I wouldn't personally use the term, especially towards the soldiers. Quite often we apply these terms to our enemies without batting an eye.

Personally, I do not know if I am capable of accepting responsibility for something that I have little to no control over (i.e. the government or their actions). Also, I give respect where it is earned by actions not by winning a popularity contest. It is far too easy to sit back in the land of nod and accept everything blindly because it is being related to you by a person in a position of authority.

p.s. I think the US is the most wonderful country in the world and I am proud of my country as well. Like you, I am not always proud for the actions of our government, but I certainly love what this country stands for in principle.

I hope you realize that my minor disagreements with you are just that...minor disagreements. And I maintain that my opinions are only my opinions...I am sure that you and many others disagree with me to varying degrees and that is awesome!

It's hardly surprising to learn that Shakira sailed through her schoolwork and, having been moved up several years, finished her education when she was 15. By this stage she had also found time to make two albums. Both bombed commercially, though safe in the knowledge that she was destined for greatness, Shakira wasn't deterred. At 16, the family moved to Bogota, where Shakira landed the main role in the soap El Oasis. "I was a very bad actress but I had a lot of fun," she remarks. "Besides, someone had to pay the bills."

Shakira´s father used to sell Mago Lorgia´s book trick among other things.

but we are not talking about that don't we?
we are talking about the Costeños

and here for all of you

If anyone were to ask Carlos Vives if he were rolo or costeño, what do you think he'd respond without hesitation? Nice try on Bogota. And they are many vallenato artists doing just great without Bogota help. He just chose a different path.

Many, many people come to the USA for financial reasons, yet associate themselves more with where they are from, than where they are.

Some Colombians look down on costeños, and call them all kinds of negative stuff. But here's the truth. When a costeño makes it big, suddenly he/she is not "one of them (costeños)." He or she is "one of us." Or, he/she is different than the rest of the costeños. Hypocrisy.

Many Colombians wish they had the creativity and live as happy and apparently carefree as costeños do. To most costeños, money isn't everything, hence why they're not as inclined to leave their families behind in Colombia.

Here's a list of internationally positively-influential Colombians and businesses from the coast, I challenge someone to put up a similar list of folks from the interior.

Avianca
Santo Domingo family
"Gabo" Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Botero
Shakira
Carlos Vives
"El Pibe" Carlos Valdarrama
Joe Arroyo
Sofia Vergara
Edgar Renteria
Orlando Cabrera
Angie Cepeda

Rubito - Name BOGOTA born and bred artists who've positively impacted the music scene in Colombia's favor.

There is no secret to why the just about most of Colombia's talent is born on the coast. It's called SOUL. Money ain't soul, no matter how you cut it. As a musician, you gotta respect that, at the very least. Go to the coast PERSONALLY and see for yourself.

Outside of Colombia, and primarily in Bogota and maybe Medellin, who the fuck knows the folks you're talking about????

Cali??? Salsa central of Colombia.
Barranquilla/Valledupar/La Guajira - Vallenato, merengue
Cartagena - Champeta
Medellin - Depends on where you go, but salsa primarily
Other places - Vallenatos, cumbias
Bogota - Who cares?

Where does Soda Estereo and Aterciopelados fit into that?

How many Colombians know who the fuck they are? Seriously. You can ask someone on the plane from the USA to Colombia, their response 95% of the time will be "Who? What?" Ask the same exact people about the folks I listed, I can guarantee they will know EXACTLY who they are 95% of the time.

people from the coast are extrovert, confident, happy, that's why they produced so many artists, that they don't have the facilities on the cost is another thing, but as i said in many countries this happens just like you are good at something and need to move away because your town doesn't provided the right university or college to do it.

My daughter example she is very good at drama (i don't know how you American call it) and she is moving away in Sept because here there is not a place, good schools where she can pursuit her talent , but the talent is there. most of the drama school are around London, and few in other big cities.

If she becomes famous nobody is going to say, London made her or Bristol, no they will said she studied in so and so but the main thing will be where she was born.

Discos Fuentes / CARTAGENA

Discos Fuentes is a record label based in Colombia. It was founded in 1934 in Cartagena, Colombia by Antonio Fuentes Estrada,[1] and was the first Colombian record label.[2] The label was instrumental in introducing African-based genres such as cumbia, fandango, and porro to Colombia.[3] The label has been described as "Colombia's version of Motown", peaking in the 1960s and early 1970s.[1] Discos Fuentes achieved a series of firsts for Colombia: the first compilation LP (1960), the first to release music on Compact disc (1987), and the first Laser disc released by a Latin America record label (1995).[2] While founder Estrada died in 1985, the late 1980s onwards saw the company expand into video production, and the takeover of labels including Discos Tropical and Curro.[2]

Sonolux / BOGOTA

Colombian state record label Sonolux, part of the Organizacion Ardila Lulle, is still on the look-out for an international partner, with a sale to Sony having gone unconfirmed. Talks with Mexican and Spanish labels have occurred whilst other multinationals such as Universal,Warner and EMI are also interested in becoming the international partner of Sonolux, Colombia's leading label (ahead of Codiscos and Fuentes). Sony has a Colombian market share of 31% follwed by Universal with 11.8 and ...

Prodiscos / BOGOTA

So, it looks like two out of three of today's big music companies are in Bogota but one of them is owned by Sony (I think). It's also incorrect to say the coast never had much in the way of music infrastructure.

Wow. Rubito finally gave in. Let's mark this as a special day in PBH history. LOL!!!

Seriously, Rubi, when you get to Colombia in August, as a musician, you really need to get to the coast and absorb. The live music and even recorded music being down there is ridiculous. The vallenato concerts alone show true master craftsmanship.

By the way, Elmo is 100% right. Joe Arroyo, Ivan Villazon, Diomedes, los Zuletos, etc. are all Colombian artists with 20 years in the music game who've never had to compromise themselves and/or come through Bogota. The newer breed of Silvestre Dangond, Peter Manjarrez, Jorge Celedon, Felipe Pelaez, the late Kaleth Morales, and even one of my buddies, Damien and Sus Tesoros (By The Rivers of Babylon cover) have not had to come through Bogota. Then, you have the champeta groups of Cartagena. These folks in these Colombian genres are living just fine, very popular, and touring the country and abroad, but based out of the coast and maybe Valledupar.

A couple of other things, while JP Montoya is very popular right now, esp. in Europe for obvious reasons, Colombia's most prominent sports figure to date is El Pibe. People everywhere know that dude, or of him and his run with the Colombian national team in the 90s. Then, there's the trademark hair and flare.

Edgar Renteria and Orlando Cabrera are making major strides in advancing baseball in Colombia, and getting to over to the next level. Colombia may even enter the next World Series of Baseball event.

Someone mentioned something about other than costeño, well-renown Colombian doctors and scientists, even businesses. Maybe someone can provide a list of these, I'm sure it's extensive.

Of course, I recognize Juan Valdez cafe. But, don't include Bancolombia in that list. That's like saying Bank of Argentina or Bank of Ecuador. While it might serve a purpose in that country, it's not very well-known outside of it. Avianca and the Santo Domingo family are costeño born and internationally known. Just trying to learn here too.
