Poor But Not Happy in Colombia

I came across this site the other day. I read a couple of his final posts:

- the guy is not happy with the school where he's teaching. Note: I was surprised to see the full name of a student with a learning disability... not a good idea.

- sounds like his fiance/wife (the status is a little confusing) is getting cold feet

No activity in a year so who knows how things turned out.

Hola!

Basicaly, it is a rather sad story in general! I think, the person has left a reply here or else he just forgot Colombian websites!

Well, I read some of his statements and he was sounding unwilling to adapt to the local culture. Begging to roller blade when it is not done in Bogota is unrealistic! Who expects USA football to be watched at the local bar when visiting Colombia? For me, I learned to scream and shout for Deportivo Cali, despite America embarrassing them their 2nd game last season! OK, I hated Soccer before Colombia, since I could not run fast but living like a local means loving what locals like! I draw exceptions to having bad dietary habits of just greasy food! Still, having beans and rice is good for you and affordable, despite USA values!

I better go now! Its has been almost 4 months, since being in Cali so I am getting testy! My GF never had it so bad, since she told me today that she only was away from me 2 months at a time. She forgot my passport was lost in 2007, so I did not see her for 3 months!

man, i gotta admit, been there in those moods. bored, lonely, tired of everything colombian, dying to get back home to my kids, family, familiar surrounds, etc. but, after all was said and done, i always came back. it's a crap shoot sometimes. i'm here, i'm bored...i'm there, i'm bored. what can i say. without knowing everything there is to know, i can appreciate some of his feelings and sentiments.

Hola!

Adapting to live in Bogota is different than living in Cali or other warm cities. Who can tell your American friends that it is 18C/65F as a high in the middle of the Summer? I think that guy went to the wrong city in Colombia and he did not WANT to take what the locals like as his own!

Hola!

I really like this video! It is sad, but this guy needs to see it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4w9EksAo5hY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYwlRH7R6DE This one is in English, but really the original version is better!

I saw this video while in Cali, Colombia! Basically, it shocked me that it was so unique and yet in the USA I had to go to Colombia to see the music!

It is a satire of USA culture, if you miss the humor! Basically, to me it means that you can see American culture all over the world, but do not expect that it is there!

Thanks for the link it gives a good summary of the 10K part of the half maraton in Bogotá taking place again next Sunday. It is the 9th version so the blog was from a couple of years ago.

http://www.mediamaratonbogota.com/

Today was the sixth annual Bogota Media Marathon. Andrea signed herself and I up for the 10 km run (there was an optional 21 km run also) and the day couldn't have been nicer to be outside, bright sunshine and very clear skies. I had run one other 10 km (it's actually 12 km) for competition, it was the Bay to Breakers while I lived in San Francisco (I recall finishing in under an hour. 50 minutes, I think). For this run, neither Andrea nor I properly trained for this event but I knew beforehand that she would finish ahead of me. The 10 k race started precisely at 11am, which was a bit strange for around here, and Andrea and I were immediately separated. We expected that to happen because she and I have different paces.

I am a teacher myself and agree with Tinto that giving the full name of a student with a learning disability, or any student by that matter, is a very bad idea. It's also very un- professional as teacher. When I studied for my pedagogy exam here in Norway, and had practice in school it was made clear that giving any personal information about any student was reason for instant dismissal from the pedadogy course.

If I were the headmaster of this school I would fire this "teacher" immediately. he may be an excellent lecturer for all I know, but "outing" a student like this is completely unacceptable.
