Police corruption

Ive heard a lot of people (colombians)tell me the police are corrupt in colombia. However in my travels to colombia ive never had any problems in dealing with them.I must admit i have little trust of them...but then i think a person could run into bad cops anywhere.Has anyone had any problems with them?Ive heard they are often of little help when someone has been cased and robbed or screwed over.Any good good cop storys?Just curious...id exspecially like the opinions of people that are colombian...they,d know more than anyone and im curious as to there take on this.

Your a tourist, they will most likely be nice to you.

Try being someone from a lower stata - BIG difference

Then again, the first time I came to Colombia, upon leaving (16 years ago) They took me in a stairwell, cuffed me, and asked for $300. I said no, they produced a bag with white powder, put it in my carry on, and then asked again. In the end they got the money. I don't see this happening nowadays though.

My taxi was stopped in Cartagena at a traffic control point about 3 years ago. One of the 2 young ladies with me did not have her cedula. She was 19 then. Something about underage girls was mentioned, and I was asked for 10,000 pesos. I gave it to them.

Even if the girl had been 17, I think I could have taken her to a disco.

I was stopped once on the street in Bogotá and asked for my passport. Why, I don't know. I didn't have it with me, or even a copy which I sometimes carry. So they wanted to take me to the comiseria. I said why not just take me to my hotel and I'll get it for you.

No chance.

So how am I going to get it for you I asked? Get a friend to go get it they said. I don't know anyone who can go into the safe deposit box at the hotel and get my passport, sorry.

This went on for about 45 minutes. In the end I guess they got tired and realised I wasn't going to give them any money or whatever they wanted so they let me go on my way.

So I don't know if they are corrupt or just kind of slow and incompetent?

(BTW, my brother is a cop.)

Corruption Real interesting to see how people visualize corruption. Some of these stories involve people who are clearly not complying with the law by not carrying identification and yet they think the corrupt is only the police who accepted the money and not them who actually gave it? I just wish you would have ended in jail for not complying with the law.

Juan Do you suppose that the police have the time to jail everyone who doesn't carry their cedula?

They clearly don't have time to ticket those who run red lights.

So, juanalejo; you think and wish that any person who doesn't have a cedula on their person should be jailed? I didn't realize this was such a serious offense.
