I just read a website about Medellin that refers to Poblado as "the standard for the city". What are your thoughts, opinions, experiences?

Peter (Moderator) says on Jul 9, 2007, 08:09: Pfft Poblado isn't particularly interesting. Try a walk in Prado centro, much better. Poor but snappy 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Lostgringo says on Jul 9, 2007, 09:04: What does "standard for the City" mean to you? To me, it means that this is what all typical neighborhoods look like. The average or standard. If this is the case there is no way Pablado is the standard for Medellin just like Zona Rosa is not the standard of Bogota. jaramillo says on Jul 9, 2007, 09:53: Maybe it is meant as a standard for other neighborhoods to try to emulate. Calle Pichincha certainly doesn't look like El Poblado!

Flynn27 says on Jul 9, 2007, 10:04: It was described as the most desirable part of the city. Peter, what do you like about Prado? Any places avoid due to safety issues?

robi666 says on Jul 9, 2007, 10:34: Flynn, if you are going to live here, Poblado sets the standard and is the most desirable part of the city. You wouldn't like to live in Centro. But, as a tourist, Peter is right. Nothing much to see, if not partying at night. "I am a citizen of the most beautiful nation on earth. A nation whose laws are harsh yet simple, a nation that never cheats, which is immense and without borders, where life is lived in the present." 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

morphus says on Jul 9, 2007, 11:33: Poblado is the best place for a gringo to stay in Medellin. Its safe and centralized. Its close to everything. I like seedy places like Centro too. I've even been to the Medellin crackhouse which i thought was interesting...only a mil peso a hit. But I still think Poblado is the best. I rent an apartment right accross from Parque Poblado. I just walk out of the building and there is a big party going on in the park all night. I tried staying in Envigado, La 70 and Estadio. It was too boring and hard to make friends. Most people are snobby. I made a lot of friends in Centro but you have to be careful. There are a lot of shady characters.

kikolina0920 says on Jul 9, 2007, 12:21: It depends on your taste, definitely. I find El Poblado to be too far from everywhere, and things there to be too expensive for my wallet. For me, the only place is Laureles. That's because I have always worked there, that's where all my family and friends are, and the part of Medellin I feel most comfortable in. El Poblado is Estrato 6, while Laureles in Estrato 5 or 6, so if you're looking at apartments or accomodations, it is pretty much the same thing; upper middle-class dwellings. There has always been rivalry between the two, and most people who have lived in Laureles wouldn't be caught dead in El Poblado; people in El Poblado say the same about Laureles. I like the night life in El Parque Lleras, but the traffic on la Avenida del Poblado during the day is horrible. There is much accessability and ways to manuever around Laureles, while in El Poblado, the options are much less. Like I said at the beginning, it is a matter of taste.

tomtom33 says on Jul 9, 2007, 16:46: Morph, that is exactly why I bought in the Laureles area. I have nothiing against Gringos, but I like the real estate values in Conquistadores. And it is more centrally located.

mvefwd says on Jul 9, 2007, 19:23: I just returned from my second MDE trip. The first time, I stayed in Poblado. I was nice, if you like that posh sort of things. I have to agree with TomTom & Kiko... Laureles is the place for me. No matter where you go... You are who you are... 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

manINred says on Jul 9, 2007, 19:37: I would hardly call Poblado posh, but i suppose by Colombian standards it is. It's just another neighbourhood, and there's nothing wrong with it. You'll find more gringos there than anywhere else in the city except the youth hostels, but it is full of mostly bourgeousie Colombians. There's lots of pretentiousness in Poblado. It's safe and convenient and has a lot of stuff, especially at night.

manINred says on Jul 9, 2007, 20:29: Well Simon with all due respect, what do you want me to say? That Poblado is the "greatest neighbourhood in the world" or "the best neighbourhood in Medellin"? I don't believe that it is either of those things. The tasteful buildings that stick out of the side of the mountains are very nice, but that is quite typical of Medellin as a whole, a very picturesque city. All this in my very humble opinion.

Lisa Zee says on Jul 9, 2007, 20:33: Well here I am in El Poblado, I feel very safe, went to Citibhank an got money of the ATM, I felt very, very safe. I am living at a beautiful finca in Rionegro, been here for 2 weeks and just last night came to Medellin, and will be going back tomorrow to RIonegro. We are looking to buy land in Santa Elena, and I will be comuting from Santa Elena to El Poblado.

Simon says on Jul 9, 2007, 20:39: I just wondered where you were from that made tall buildings sticking out the side of a mountain seem like 'any other neighborhood'. I mean, it just is not that common in most places, I would assume. When I look at El Poblado from the lookout by Pueblito Paisa, it just looks so awesome. HERE'S SIMON!!!! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
|
Lisa Zee says on Jul 9, 2007, 20:52: Yes awesome, I do not like the city so much, but if you are going to live in the city, El Poblado is the place. I can not believe how many buildings are here!. Medelling is getting so biggggg.

robi666 says on Jul 10, 2007, 15:47: Flynn, they are both nice barrios. Real estate in more expensive in El Poblado. I think el Poblado is greener and cooler. El Poblado is fancier.
