I had the same dilema When my wife and I first started seeing each other, WE would correspond daily via e-mail. I didn't speak Spanish so I was relying on my translator software. I wondered for the longest time why she kept telling me I"m stange. Everything else told me she loved me, but several times a dapy, Te extrano. Finally I got into a internet chat room and asked someone. Then I was quite relieved to learn she missed me a great deal. hahahah

entering extended characters If you are using a US keyboard it is easy to add extended keyboard support. This is for XP, Win9x and others are slightly different:

Go to Control Panel and choose Language, Regional Options (2 steps).

A window pops up with options, select middle Language tab.

Select the Detail button under Text Services and Input languages.

Under Settings tab, go to Installed Services and select Add ...

A new window opens, Add Input languages

Use Input language English (United States), add under Keyboard Layout/IME the variant United States International

I prefer to use it as default keyboard, so I select it as such above.

With this keyboard selected you construct the international extended characters:

~ + n = ñ
" + o = ö
' + o = ó
Right-Alt + s = ß

If you PM me with your email address I can send screen shots of how to set this up and alsi include a table of possible key combinations. Tell me also your Windows version then.

Neonovo, q' barrrrbaro. Gracias, biscocho, but how do you do it? I'm trying to add an apostrophe here or there or the wavy line on top of the n and it doesn't work. Not that I know the proper grammar & style in Spanish but, gotta practice/learn. You know that writing "year" in Spanish can put you in a tight spot. Chao!

It can put you in a tight spot, Katjie? What an opening for Elmo! A certain tight spot is his favorite spot.

Thanks Lionheart Just wanted to say thank you for your extended chars post. I made the change and it works great in my US K/B. I used to do the Alt-xxx thing all the time and now I can save myself a few keystrokes every time I need an accented char. I usually type 1/2 the time in English and 1/2 the time in Spanish so it comes in really handy.

Thx again buddy -- R.B.

Lionheart says on Jan 20, 2005, 20:31:

you're welcome R.B. I need it to additionally type in German and add in words from other European languages.

another tip: if you can't find or create a specific character, go to

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Character Map

There you will find the Alt-xxxx key number for any given character of your character set. It also allows you to copy and paste.
