Plastic surgey what's going on?

what do you think has changed in Colombia?

In my time the 80's women were happy with their bodies, surgery was never talked about. Now it seems like it's like fashion Not only Medellin is the plastic capital but Villavo is not far behind, i was talking to a plastic surgeon in Villavo and he told me " it's becoming so popular that is on every Christmas and birthday list, he says girls from the age of 14 come to do some surgery on them, breast, bottoms, hips, etc, what's going on? where this come from? since when? In Colombia this is becoming a real burden for young girls in the race "to be perfect"

Kat, I agree... I don't get it... It must be a competition thing, but I would hope that there are guidelines that girls can't have surgery under a certain age, right?.... The female body doesn't stop developing until age 18....

Hmmm... That's just wrong, I know we have guidelines in the states too, don't know what they are since I've never inquired, but they should have them in Colombia as well...

I'm guessing the majority of girls are getting breast implants... It must be really inexpensive if sooo many girls are getting them, do you know?...

I didn't see an abundance when I was in Bogota, and I was mostly in Ciudad Salitre... But, I do know my aunt and cousin had them done... I'll have to ask them... I didn't really see that in Pereira, except for one girl at a club, I thought she was going to tip over any minute just because they were too big....

One time I was walking through the Unicentro mall in Villavo with Vivi and her cousin. We were stopped, near the entrance that has the sport shop that Kat1 found her BB guns at. They gave a 5 minute pitch to my wife and her cousin on how they could finance their plastic surgery. I would call it almost high pressure sales. And the girls were given literature, finance options, the whole deal. I was not thrilled in the least and Mrs. RJ realized that pretty quick. The plastic surgery business had their own kiosk, 2 or 3 chicks working it, passing out literature, etc. I was totally creeped out. But, I guess my point is that is is big business, even in little ole' Villavicencio.

Vanity is a large aspect of the Female Colombian Culture. It is a learned aspect from Society, the Parents and other adult members of the family. No surprise with so much presure on a perfect Physical appearence from Peers and family that this is being written about today. Who is to blame I ask? Where is the Parental emphasis on intellectual development? At 14, these Adolescents haven't even developed physically yet in many cases so PS is impractical medically at this age,,,

Thanks RJ, the financing of these "senos" would make sense... Because, even though it may be cheap in our eyes, I wouldn't think that it would be cheap to most in Colombia, right? Unless, we're talking about rock bottom cheap... The financing I'm sure has a nice reasonable interest rate, probably like 20%

I just imaging the new old generation of Colombian women, very wrinkly but with very perky boobs or their face stretch out to the maximo and their belly button touching their neck heheh

Older women should have the surgeries and implants that they feel they can have. Most sensible women over 40 have understood how little surgeries do for them, except when they're performing artists like Amparo Grisales, for example,

It does not matter how much you let them cut you up and stuff your body with fake parts, there's always some other woman who is younger, prettier and more gullible than you. The problem is with the men who think that a woman should look like his trophy and women who play along and acommodate.

Now, Desi. Calma. ;)

Know what? Of the several women I know who have had various enhancements done, most of them get angry if you accuse them of trying to please a man via surgery. They ALL swear it's about their own vanity and/or self-image. I'm not sure I buy it- but to blame the plastic surgery on "the men" is a little harsh, dontcha think?

BTW- of the 8-10 women I've talked to about this, only 3 were married or in serious relationships - so how did "the men" cause it? I assume you are implying that these poor women think they need to do this, to catch a man? Or to meet some standard set be "the men"?

The strongest, by far, woman that I know (I hope to marry her, soon) is about to have the surgery because she wants to be able to look good in more feminine clothes. And this is a woman that almost gets an attitude when I pay the dinner tab, she's so independent.

I believe it's just a bunch of self-denial. It's so much better, it sounds so much better to say, hey, I'm doing this for my self-image. for myself. Where do you get that self-image? When a woman looks in the mirror and likes what she sees, how does she judge her reflection in the mirror? Based on what? On what her mother has told her? On what her daddy has said? On what her friends/peers have said? or on what she is being fed all the time, every waking moment of her life by the media, the TV, the movies, the fashion designers, the retail shops, the internet...this is the way you're supposed to look: these are the people you are supposed to imitate.

Another friend came by (when I was in Cali last time, almost two years ago now) with a pained look in her face. What's happening....well I'm still recovering from my surgery...and why don't you stay at home...I gotta work...no shit...yes , my employer doesn't give sick leave for plastic surgery...I'm having a new one this Friday...he needs to tuck in a bit more under my ribs and I need more silicone on my butt..show me...but m'dear you look fine...nonono, I need to look better...but why....because I want to keep my husband...and if you're going to have this surgery on five different spots in your body on friday when are you supposed to go to work? the way I see it, if you are insecure about something and you have the ability to get it done, just go for it, especially if it will affect the way people see you. Hey, the world is shallow, why not take full advantage of the fact?

I have braces right now, and I see it no different as a woman getting a boob job. The fact of the matter is that both of us didn't like what we saw in the mirror, and realized that we could better our situation by fixing up our appearance a bit. Braces are very popular here, but it does not have the same stigma as a boob job, even though you are essentially doing them for the same purpose...to look better (a lot of people say have braces to improve gum health and jaw health, but they are lying they just want their smile to look better)

Like I said, the world is shallow, which makes it easier for one to take advantage.

Now, I DO disagree with 14 year olds getting boob jobs. At least let yourself mature first.

A very pragmatic viewpoint, and I agree thoroughly. Who cares what someone else does to their body? If they are willing to take the risks, and there are reciprocal parties who appreciate the results, well go for it!

And there are other reasons for cosmetic surgery other than 'shallow' ones explained in this thread.
