Plastic Surgery & Dentistry Agencies

If Medellin is so hot when it comes to the above... why does Google lead me to an array of terrible websites that I wouldn’t trust to cut my hair, let alone sculpt my face... ?

Do high quality agencies exist? I've searched poor but happy but it brings up a random list of doctors names, nothing more... who would I contact regarding a package holiday that guarantees the best of everything... for these services???

Thanks

Usher

I have used a Dentist in Bogota who is really good but she is a lone practicioner and not hooked up with any agency. Several PBH posters have used her and are very satisfied with her service and prices.

When it comes to plastics, I think it is best to get a recommendation by word of mouth, preferably someone that has had the work done and you can see it. Yes, it is nice to get some idea when you a start from "nowhere" - but when it comes to this area too much can go wrong even to the most skilled surgeon (depending on what you are wanting)

Dentistry? May I share with you my rule of thumb when trying to establish a dentist?
First choice - Married couple run practices - Either two married dentists or a dentist and their spouse is a dental hygienist or equivalent in Colombia (please keep in mind a dental hygienist has a substantial education as opposed to an assistant)

Second Choice - Family run with at least 2 dentists related to each other

Usher I see you are asking for dentistry and plastics? What is it you are looking to have done?

CG--I have to disagree with you! My Dentist in Bogota runs the whole shebang! She is the Dentist, Hygienist and Secretary! She practices alone saving money and passing the savings on to her Patients. Her foreign Patients afterall want to save $$$ and at the same time, recieve quality Dental Care. Very doable with a Solo practicioner! Why do you think a joint(more then one person) practice is necessary to offer quality work?? The Dentist I use in Miami, if needed, also is a Solo Practioner and again, as the dentist in Colombia, her miami clients are well satisfied with her services. More personnel in office= Higher price and not necessarily higher quality work.

Went to her after Mike's reccomendation. Travelled from Armenia to do so, twice. She's really nice, and I had no pain at all. She even took out time on a Sunday to treat me. She also did half the work and recieved no payment until I went back a few months later, said it was no problem.

MM- Whao! Con calma! My comment was my rule of thumb (personal) not a law carved in stone. No need to "disagree" with me jejeje...that is funny. Maybe I need to clarify why I use this rule of thumb
(Actually I think what you are describing is great too. A single person is just fine)
The reason I use this when I enter (move) to areas where I do not know anyone and need a dentist? Is because I find that husband wife teams and families frequently are involved in sticking around and have community interest and their local reputation is even more important. I have had 200% good experience with this formula. One husband wife team - the wife even offered me to wear her wedding dress when i got married (pretty nice person, eh) another I went to had husband, wife and father in law - they have been in the community for over 40 years.
I have gone to 2 that did not fit this formula I used...they were "fine" but they MOVED or they had to sell their practice. Sorry, just don;t like to shop around that much - UNO? jaja

OK - relax Amgo ;))

CG--having used dentists for over a half century, unfortunately due poor childhood eating and brushing practices, I have visited my share of Hometown Dentists. The Majority were Solo Practicioneers and some were in Practice for over 50 years! In the SAME office at that! Now if that isn't Stability, I don't know what is! I simply do not see where a joint practice enchances longevity/stability. Maybe the opposite, maybe many Dentists, Attornies ect like the break away from a Wife or Husband in the same office, Imagine, spending 8-10 hours a day and then to go home to the same person/problems for another 16 hours Wow--thats stifling and suffocating! I think you would find a share of Dentists who would deliberately retire to get away from a Set-up like this! The Solo Practicioneers in our hometown had Community interests very much at heart, sitting on many Charity Boards, Free Clinics, Civic Endeavors ect. In actuality/reality, I never observed a married practice having more Community interest/stability because they were/are a team. Where is the Correlation?? One could say Single Practicioneers have more time after work to offer their services. I see single lawyers here in Miami also doing this--offering their Legal Services to poor Immigrants in need. Many times these Dentist, Docs, Nurses, Attorneys are Single and have the time to Volunteer to Free clinics that a married person would never have,,,

Ther Poster above Bufalo even mentioned the Dentist I recommended came in to see him on a Sunday, if that doesn't show devotion to a Patient I don't know what does.

Be careful down here if you ask for a "dentist" or "dentista", that's real old-school and is not usually someone professional. Not too long ago a "dentista" would simply rip your tooth out if you had a cavity, that's basically all they did.

Bufalo, before I selected mine(dentist) in Bogota, I visted 3 other dentists for opinions.I checked out their offices while there, noting cleanliness, order ect. And I work in the medical field so I feel that gives me a leg up clinically as far as what to look for. I would be VERY careful in taking recommendations from some stranger of non medical experience. Many are pushing their own agenda for a Commission and haven't a clue as to what to look for medically. You need to do your due diligence and thanks to the Internet, you can do a lot of checking fast for free on Dentists, Doctors without using a 3rd party who only wants a Commission. Many large&well known Clinics (clinica santa de Bogota) and others in Medellin have BilinguaL Staff and can assist you with lodging, transportation ect so NO need to go outside for 3rd part help and pay a huge commission that may double your medical procedure. Caveat Emptor. Some 3rd party helpers are hooked with Hotels in Bogota/Medellin and the room rate doubles when they lead you to it. Why pay double for something when you can do this yourself for free? Most Posters who are taking the big step to have medical procedures out of country already have the smarts to act independently for resources, why pay someone?

Guess you would have to ask them, maybe it is not your cup of tea - but it is for many people. There are many married couples and family run businesses, not just in dentistry. Usually you will find two people that enjoy each other's company and have common interests and do not feel suffocated so to speak. I come from a family like this, worked out just fine - my father never felt "suffocated" neither my mother.
Uhhh - Hey, even if you go into a business partnership with a friend (males & male) it is like a marriage and you see each other daily and talk and see each other after hours, so no different.

Kitty's philosophy? If you feel suffocated - more than likely it is the wrong person OR you are a loner. MM, sounds like you are "Anti - partner" (?), jejeje...;)) Good Luck to you, hope maybe you find someone one day that changes your perspective - it CAN happen UNO?

Actually this is one of my ideas for a way to make a living in Colombia. Go down research and associate yourself with the finest practicioners. Then set up the business facilitating the whole process for travellers.

good idea and I thought about it. and researched it a bit. Turns out most practices have associates in the states, mostly Miami that set up the clients. They see them on their home turf, better and more comfy for the client. I don't know if I'd get on a plane for surgury without meeting someone face-to face first either. The other thing and rightly so is that most people wouldn't want to pay the middleman, check out most posts here about it. but if you do get the ball rolling the word of mouth spreads and it can be good.

It still amazes me that my mundane questions can start such riviting debates...

The theme of this conversation seemed to be about trust... and the need to get a personal recommendation... I completely agree... but surely an agency could build up trust in the same way an individual can.

Actually, i'm not looking for surgery or dentistry myself... I just want to be able to make a useful referral if asked... but it seems difficult...

Thanks y'all
