picture sizes

Hi,
I noteiced that some of the pictures on this site can be HUGE! I also want to submit more photos, so what would be a good size? (I'd rather not experiment using the site)

Must have been a fad ? 50% of the women had rear mounted Cellphone Holders last week !!! Today it is almost ZERO and this happened overnight ??? I can't understand why ?

I've read that you can't see any worth while detail on photos with a resolution of more than 72 pixels per inch. I resize to 72 per inch and then set the size to 4" x 6".

This seems a good balance that allows a quick download time for viewers and still being large enough to view.

For instance,, the 640 x 480 image takes 87K,, the cell phone holder takes 36K.

I reduced the pixel size and made the photo a little brighter, now the size is 34K, plus it is one half inch larger than a 4x6,, but what the heck.

I shoot at 6 Meg. Pixels,, never know when you will need a digital zoomed image.

You can see much more detail in photos at higher resolutions than 72 ppi - but that only applies to printing, or display on a computer when viewed at 100%. Here's why 72 ppi is all that's necessary for Internet usage. A monitor will only display at 72 ppi. This is called "screen resolution". A 300 ppi photo will not display higher than the screen resolution - it will only display at 72 ppi regardless of its native resolution, therefore anything higher than 72 ppi is overkill and a waste of bandwidth, but I still see high-resolution images used on the Internet all the time, and for no reason at all.
